May 1 (Reuters) - The Baltic Exchange's main sea freight
index, which tracks rates for ships ferrying dry bulk
commodities, on Wednesday scaled a more-than-three-month peak on
strong demand for capesize vessels.
* The Baltic index , which reflects rates for
capesize,
panamax and supramax vessels, gained 20 points, or 2 percent, to
1,031 points, its highest since Jan. 22.
* The main index registered its biggest daily percentage
gain in
more than five months in the previous session.
* The capesize index rose 8.9 percent, or 113
points, to
1,389 points, its highest since Jan. 29.
* In the previous session, the index posted its biggest
one-day
percentage rise since April 4.
* Average daily earnings for capesizes, which typically
transport
170,000 tonne-180,000 tonne cargoes such as iron ore and coal,
were up $552 at $12,270.
* The panamax index marginal fell 1 point to 1,187
points.
* Average daily earnings for panamaxes, which usually carry
coal
or grain cargoes of about 60,000 tonnes to 70,000 tonnes, edged
$4 lower to $9,499.
* The supramax index slipped 5 points to 763 points.
