An appraisal well on the BP-operated Yakaar discovery has confirmed a “world-scale” gas resource off the coast of Senegal.

Joint venture partner Kosmos Energy revealed Monday the Yakaar-2 well had reached a depth of 4800 metres and intersected about 30 metres of net gas pay in similar high-quality Cenomanian reservoir to the Yakaar-1 discovery well.

Yakaar-2 was drilled in a water depth of 2500 metres using the Valaris DS-12 drillship, roughly nine kilometres from Yakaar-1 and Kosmos said the results proved up the southern extension of the field.

“The Yakaar-2 appraisal well demonstrates the scale and quality of the Yakaar resource base,” Kosmos chief executive Andrew G Inglis said.

“Senegal is one of the fastest growing economies in the world and Kosmos is excited to be working alongside BP and Petrosen to support the country’s growing energy needs.”

Kosmos said in Monday’s announcement that the results underpinned its view the Yakaar-Teranga resource base was “world-scale” and had the potential to support a liquefied natural gas project.

The Yakaar and Teranga discoveries have previously been estimated to hold between 10 trillion and 25 trillion cubic feet of gas in-place.

The partners are expected to take a phased approach to the development, with the first phase to provide domestic gas and data to optimise the development of future phases which could see gas exported.

The Valaris DS-12 drillship will now move to drill the Orca-1 well for BP and Kosmos off Mauritania.
