Interesting!

"New federal environmental assessment gives First Nations new powers, opportunities

about 5 hours ago By: Nelson Bennett"

"First Nations across Canada have increasingly become active partners in major resource projects – from oil sands operations, to pipelines and LNG projects -- and industry has learned that the key to success in dealing with First Nations is to start the engagement process early on."

"By becoming active partners in projects, some First Nations have sought to increase their influence on how projects develop and provide more economic benefits to First Nations workers and businesses. It is expected the new IA may provide even more incentive for First Nations to become active partners, rather than just intervenors."

""""""This tool is working towards reconciliation and recognizing Indigenous people as true partners, as opposed to mere stakeholders," Ransom said"""""

"Environmental law group loses bid to stop Alberta’s inquiry into funding of oil and gas foes

THE CANADIAN PRESS

PUBLISHED NOVEMBER 30, 2020UPDATED 20 HOURS AGO"

"DARRYL DYCK/THE CANADIAN PRESS

An environmental law group has lost its bid to pause Alberta’s inquiry into where critics of its oil and gas industry get their funding.

Ecojustice sought an injunction in the summer to suspend the inquiry until there is a ruling on whether it is legal.

Court of Queen’s Bench Justice Karen Horner dismissed the application with costs on Friday."

"Alberta Premier Jason Kenney and his United Conservative government contend foreign interests have long been bankrolling campaigns against fossil fuel development. In 2019, forensic accountant Steve Allan was tapped to lead the $2.5-million inquiry.

Mr. Allan’s report was initially due in July, but after two extensions and a $1-million budget increase, it is now expected by Jan. 31. Energy Minister Sonya Savage must publish the final report within 90 days of receiving it.

“The Government of Alberta is pleased to see the courts strike down a nuisance injunction application by Ecojustice designed to slow down the Public Inquiry into Foreign Funded Campaigns,” Alberta Energy spokesman Kavi Bal said in a statement."

AEQ v/Eric T., Twitter.

Encouraged by over-media coverage, social movements no longer know how to stop by themselves these days. Wokism will die quietly, overwhelmed by its exaggeration and insignificance. Social movements can't stop themselves nowadays. They die by exaggerating.

Even with the progress building an alliance and recent polling data confirming a majority of Quebecers are in favor of local oil development; we are very careful not to rush the consultation process.

We do not have a timeline when this will be completed because this process is open-ended. This will disappoint some of our shareholders. Our coalition has never been stronger but, now more than ever, it is critical that we continue to collaborate with key partners and customers and secure their support in advance of applying for Government approvals.

"Canada must seize LNG opportunities in Asian market

By Mark Milke on December 9, 2020"

"There’s a dearth of sensible analysis when it comes to reasonable ways to decrease carbon emissions.

Some point fingers at Canada’s oil sands, or oil and gas more generally. They imagine if that industry disappeared, somehow carbon emissions would magically evaporate as well.

The reality is that Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions are 1.6 per cent of the total world emissions (with the oil and gas sector’s emissions at 0.3 per cent and the oil sands at 0.1 per cent included in that 1.6 per cent).

Moreover, Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions intensity has fallen by 30 per cent since 2000. Between 2000 and 2018, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions intensity in Canada fell from 0.5 megatonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent per $1 billion of gross domestic product to 0.35 megatonnes per $1 billion of GDP.

Mark Milke

Also, oil sands emissions intensity has been falling. Between 2011 and 2018, oil sands emissions intensity fell from 0.086 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent per barrel to 0.067 tonnes, a decline of about 22 per cent.

That progress on reducing carbon emissions is about to be wiped away by the dramatic increase in coal-fired electricity plants being built worldwide."

As of 2020, 350 coal-fired power plants are under construction. They include seven in South Korea, 13 in Japan, 52 in India and 184 in China, with the rest in other parts of the world. China is also building and financing hundreds of coal-fired power plants in countries such as Turkey, Vietnam, Indonesia, Philippines, Egypt and Bangladesh.

How Canada can cut global emissions and boost its economy by Gwyn Morgan

This matters to sensible discussions about how much pain – lost investment, killed jobs, lost incomes and potential foregone tax revenue in the hundreds of billions of dollars – Canadians should endure in attempts to squeeze reduced carbon emissions out of us.

Consider that Canada’s total energy-related emissions (just 0.6 gigatonnes in 2018) were about half of the emissions from just India’s coal-fired power plants (never mind all other emissions). They are about one-eighth of just the emissions from China’s coal-fired electricity (never mind all of China’s emissions).

But what if natural gas could replace some coal-fired electricity generation?

Ven Venkatachalam

The problem is that Canada is not yet even in the game of exporting gas outside North America. Australia, Qatar, Russia, the United States and others have been supplying markets in Asia and elsewhere for years, having entered the natural gas export market early.

Canada needs to allow its natural advantages in natural gas to flourish, including at its ports.

The United States has been the main export market for Canadian natural gas. That is why, when American companies found ways to extract natural gas cheaply from shale formations, that country could meet more of its domestic needs and yet export ever-higher volumes of natural gas.

That was a double whammy for Canada. Our main export market for natural gas needed less Canadian gas and we had no liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals that would allow Canada to sell to other markets.

That’s why American natural gas exports soared 1,200 per cent between 2000 and 2017 while Canada’s exports of gas declined by 17 per cent. Meanwhile, exports of natural gas were up 13 per cent for Russia, 73 per cent for Malaysia, 146 per cent for Norway, 563 per cent for Australia and 800 per cent for Qatar.

Canada does have an advantage over Americans. Our West Coast exports terminals are significantly closer to some Asian ports. The Canadian LNG export projects now envisioned (with one under construction) offer shorter shipping from Canada’s ports to select ports in Asia.

For example, the distance from the U.S. Gulf Coast to the Japanese ports of Himeji or Sodegaura is more than 9,000 nautical miles, compared to less than 4,200 nautical miles from the coast of British Columbia.

Asia has ever-increasing carbon (and particulate) emissions from coal-fired power. Canada has a surplus of natural gas. That represents an opportunity for Asian countries and Canada.
