Grensesprenging og fjerning av proprietære murer. Åpner for store, nye muligheter i markedet!

Q-Free passion project, FREEtheMIBS, celebrates first anniversary

10 November 2020

Co-founded by Q-Free alum Tom Stiles and Trisha Tunilla in November 2019, FREEtheMIBS is an advocacy campaign that aims to ‘open’ proprietorial management information bases (MIBs) in the North American ITS device market. “We believe open communication protocols increase competition and promote innovation, a win-win for customers and communities,” Tunilla said. “Similar actions have been met with great success in Europe and other international markets, it’s time we catch up.”

In its first year, the FREEtheMIBS campaign quickly grew to include members from across the ITS spectrum – agencies, consultants, dealers, vendors, and academia. Together, the more than 50 individual and corporate advocates, have united to help customers fully embrace the goal of the United States National Transportation Communications for Intelligent Transportation System Protocol (NTCIP):

“NTCIP is the first set of standards for the [North American] transportation industry that allows traffic control systems to be built using a “mix and match” approach with equipment from different manufacturers.“

FREEtheMIBS campaign announces advisory board members

BY TOM STONE ON FEBRUARY 10, 2021 INTERSECTIONS & TRAFFIC SIGNALS, ITS

The #FREEtheMIBS campaign has announced the formation of its advisory board, all of whom were nominated and selected from the broadest spectrum of transportation management including private industry, public agencies, consultants, and academia.
---
Trisha Tunilla, #FREEtheMIBS advisory board chair and executive vice president of marketing at Q-Free America said the board represents a wide range of viewpoints. “We’re honored to have such a diverse, talented group of thought leaders form our initial board. Bringing together so many unique perspectives is critical to our mission to find the best, safest solutions for more openly sharing transportation protocols in the name of innovation and collaboration.”

Often kept proprietary by the manufacturer, MIBs are the common language protocols used to communicate between central traffic management systems and ITS devices including traffic signal controllers. By not making MIBs available to customers or other companies, manufacturers can extend legacy contracts and keep them sole-sourced for years, locking out potentially more cost-effective or innovative solutions because their products cannot communicate with those from other companies.
---
The FREEtheMIBs campaign recently celebrated its one-year anniversary and features active and influential members from both the private and public sectors, as well as academia including Q-Free, Siemens, Miovision, the Oregon and Utah Departments of Transportation.

Watch out!

Q-Free Leaders to Help Lead #FREEtheMIBS Advisory Board

News & Headlines
22 February 2021

Two Q-Free leaders will help lead the newly formed #FREEtheMIBS Advisory Board, the campaign announced. Trisha Tunilla, Q-Free America’s Executive Vice President of Marketing & Proposals will chair the group and Tom Stiles, Executive Vice President of ATMS Solutions and founder of the #FREEtheMIBS campaign, will join her on the board. The Advisory Board will help steer the fast-moving campaign as it continues to grow in direction and influence.

In just 15-months, #FREEtheMIBs has grown to include advocates from public agencies, private industry and academia. The campaign began after Q-Free took the bold and unprecedented step of becoming the first signal controller manufacturer to share its own MIBs. Management information bases or MIBs, contain manufacturer specific language protocols that allow signal controllers and other devices to communicate. Until Q-Free’s move, MIBs in North America were traditionally kept proprietary by manufacturers, restricting competition, locking agencies into a single-company solution and ultimately costing taxpayers who were often forced to pay for limited and sometimes ineffective products.

Tunilla says the advisory board represents the campaign’s appropriate next step. “For a short while, we were on our own, but that has all changed. We are thrilled and a little overwhelmed by the success of the campaign to date. We hope everyone at Q-Free is as proud as we are, that our company is taking a leadership role in opening standards and completely shifting the sales conversation to one based on the merit of each manufacturer’s solutions and services.”

Q-Free Intelight XN ATC Advanced Traffic Signal Controllers to be installed throughout Indiana

Press Release
30 March 2021

Contract award comes just two months after the Indiana Department of Transportation approved Q-Free’s controllers for deployment in the state.

Q-Free (OSE: QFR), a global leader in mobility solutions for smart city infrastructure, beat out the incumbent to win a major contract for the installation of 269 traffic signal controllers throughout the state of Indiana.

The deployment includes a combination of Q-Free’s new Intelight XN-1 and XN-2 Advanced Transportation Controllers (ATC) to be installed throughout the state beginning in the second quarter of 2021. The XN-series controllers represent a marked upgrade over competing models and offer the industry’s only OLED monitor screens with crisp readability even in direct sunlight and built-in GPS for corridor networking, coordinated operations, and real-time signal timing. While the XN-1 and XN-2 will operate with any NTCIP-compliant traffic signal software, Indiana DOT will pair them with Q-Free’s award-winning Intelight MAXTIME ic software. “We are thrilled that right after Indiana approved our controllers, we’ll be bringing our latest technology to the state,” said Tom Stiles, Q-Free executive vice president of ATMS solutions. “We believe the XN 1 and 2 are the modern workhorses of ATC controllers, and we’re excited that the Hoosier state will be among the first to see their benefits.”

In keeping with Q-Free’s commitment to open standards, Intelight XN Controllers feature an open architecture platform that organizes and improves traffic signal operations. They are completely scalable and operate on a Linux-based operating system that meets and exceeds current ATC, NEMA, and NTCIP standards. The XN controllers are also smaller and lightweight compared to competing devices, reducing the amount of equipment necessary and the space required in traffic cabinets. They also come with an unrestricted management information bases (MIBs) license, uncommon in the industry and allowing for complete interoperability with other traffic management devices including those from competing manufacturers. Q-Free was the first controller manufacturer to open its MIBs and is a founding member of the #FREEtheMIBS campaign.

Q-Free partner and distributor Traffic Control Products (TCP) secured the bid. The Intelight XN controller will be key to tapping into new markets according to TCP Vice President Terry Stanoch. “The XN controller is the most advanced and competitive NEMA controller on the market. We look forward to working with Indiana to upgrade their local traffic signal operations in the coming months,” Stanoch said.

Q-Free extends Georgia DOT contract for statewide traffic signal management software to include Kinetic Signals upgrade

Press Release
15 April 2021

Overseeing more than 9,000 signals and 50 central systems, Georgia DOT is the largest agency to date to commit to upgrading to the company’s Kinetic Mobility platform.

Q-Free (OSE: QFR), a global leader in mobility solutions for smart city infrastructure, today announced the signing of a 10-year agreement with the Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT). As part of the service contract, Q-Free will continue providing central traffic management software, Intelight MAXTIME ic intersection control software, and all associated intersection traffic controller hardware services statewide. The deal also provisions for a complete upgrade of the State’s current central traffic signal management system to Kinetic Signals – a technology update and rebrand of Georgia DOT’s current Intelight MAXVIEW atms.

Q-Free and Georgia DOT share a common passion for innovation and cutting-edge technology, according to Q-Free EVP of Urban Sales Tom Stiles. “Georgia DOT is an innovative agency, continually raising the bar in terms of open, coordinated, and connected systems to benefit all Georgians,” he said. “Since we first began working with the agency in 2016, their passion and persistence have directly influenced our product development and –to a degree– served as a building block for our new Kinetic Signals system.”

Kinetic Signals offers center-to-center operations through open data sharing, crucial to the regional integration of traffic management and coordination during events and emergencies. Q-Free hopes as the development of its Kinetic Mobility integrated traffic management platform continues, that Georgia DOT will play a significant role in testing new modules and also help drive expanded functionality.

“Georgia DOT has been a fantastic partner in driving technology through their research and deployment,” said Stiles. “We look forward to continuing that relationship for the benefit of the state’s residents, but also for communities outside the state who stand to benefit from everything we learn with Georgia.”

Open data sharing and communications protocols are top Q-Free priorities and they were a Georgia DOT requirement in the original and current contract. Q-Free was the first traffic management vendor to openly share its Management Information Bases (MIBs), the often-proprietary computer language traffic management devices use to communicate with each other. Q-Free is also a founding member of the FREEtheMIBs campaign, a coalition of transportation leaders from the private and public sectors whose goal is to reverse the common practice of locking agencies into costly long-term contracts because of product incompatibility.
