New Silicon Anode Technology Promises 28 Percent Longer Run Times
Chicago-based NanoGraf says it has developed a new silicon-based battery chemistry with much higher energy density than is currently available.
BY JIM MOTAVALLI
NOV 18, 2021
nanografNANOGRAF
NanoGraf, a Chicago-based start-up, says its silicon anode will enable “the world’s most energy-dense cylindrical 18650 cell,” with much higher run time than is possible with traditional cell chemistry.
Much of the funding for development of NanoGraf’s tech right now is coming from the military.
NanoGraf plans to open a plant in 2022 in Chicago to produce the silicon-based powder but is not planning on producing any batteries itself.
With lithium-ion batteries, even small improvements can make a big difference, translating to range in an electric car or longer life in a computer or tablet. That’s why it’s potentially a big deal that the Chicago-based start-up NanoGraf says that its silicon anode will enable what CEO Francis Wang calls “the world’s most energy-dense cylindrical 18650 cell,” with 800 watt-hours per liter (Wh/L). That’s a 28 percent higher run time than what’s possible with traditional cell chemistry, the company said. Reduced weight is also promised, as is—long term—less cost.

NanoGraf’s technology was developed at Northwestern University in 2012, and the company was started to commercialize it. Wang isn’t a founder, but came on board in 2015 and has been CEO for the past three years. The company now has 32 employees and has raised $23 million since its inception—largely from the military.

The interest from the armed services is obvious, because NanoGraf says it can improve operating times for soldiers’ portable equipment, and cut the weight of a 20-pound battery pack (the second-heaviest thing they carry, after body armor) by more than 15 percent. “We are a small company and we have to start somewhere,” Wang said. “The military is a great beachhead market for us.”

Ford Motor needs batteries for its electric vehicles more than semiconductor chips, CEO Jim Farley told CNBC's Jim Cramer on Thursday.

His comments come after the Detroit automaker shut down customer reservations for an upcoming electric version of the F-150 after they hit 200,000 units, which is more than double Ford's annual production capacity for the vehicle. The electric F-150 Lightning is scheduled to go on sale in the spring.

"We'll get the semiconductors, that's a matter of prioritizing the (battery-electric vehicles) over the (internal combustion engine) vehicles," Farley said during a webcast for the CNBC Investing Club with Jim Cramer. "The issue is batteries. That's what we have to solve."

Farley said the automaker is "completely oversubscribed with our battery electric vehicles," specifically the F-150 Lightning. He told CNBC last week that Ford was doing "whatever it takes" to double production capacity for electric F-150 pickup.

Farley's comments may surprise many as the automaker continues to deal with a global shortage of semiconductor chips that has wreaked havoc this year on the global automotive industry.

Automakers like Ford are increasingly striking deals to source materials and parts for electric vehicles, specifically batteries, to potentially avoid supply chain interruptions like the chips shortage has highlighted.

There's worry by some Wall Street analysts that demand for EVs will exceed the expected supply of critical materials such as lithium, creating a problem for automakers to produce the vehicles.

Commercial interest in silicon anodes and investments into start-up companies has continued through 2021 – IDTechEx estimates that $1.9B of funding has now made its way into silicon anode start-ups.

Demand from other EV segments and consumer devices still represent a significant opportunity for silicon anode material and IDTechEx forecast that by 2032, demand for silicon anode material will reach $12.9B.

Enevate entered into a license agreement with battery manufacturer EnerTech International
Enovix went public via a SPAC that valued the company at $1.1B
Elkem established a separate silicon anode company Vianode
Group 14 entered into a joint venture with SK materials for the supply of silane gas,
Sila Nano launched their battery technology in the Whoop fitness wearable

https://batteriesnews.com/competition-silicon-anode-market-idtechex/

Drop-in factories will be one piece of the puzzle to help OEMs meet demand where it’s needed. With joint ventures taking center stage this year, we’re continuing to do our part to build out a domestic battery ecosystem here in Washington with our commercial-scale Battery Active Materials (BAM) factory – plus four additional factories in the works all over the globe – to help take control of supply chains.

We launched our next generation material in the WHOOP 4.0—one of the most advanced, 24/7 health and fitness wearables. We also closed $600 million in Series F funding to begin development of a new North American 100 GWh plant.

Og «east of the cascades»
Moses Lake treffer bra der.

Som TT sa « they have to come to us or go to China»
