After a decade of growth, there were 10 million electric cars on the world’s roads by the end of 2020. This growth trend is set to continue, with at least 145 million on the roads by 2030.

The performance of batteries in this electrified future will be critical.

In this episode we are looking at a start-up that is hoping to revolutionise the materials we use to build batteries, just in time for the coming boom in demand.

Solar could be 40% of US generation by 2035, but it needs more investment, White House report finds
Dive Brief:

Solar power could represent 40% of U.S. electrical generation and could sustain as many as 1.5 million jobs by 2035, according to a report on the Biden administration's solar policies released by the White House on Tuesday.

To decarbonize the U.S. grid by 2035, the nation must deploy solar at three to four times the current rate, according to the report. The extension of investment and production tax credits by Congress could increase the rate of deployment, as could new incentives for storage and transmission projects, the report says.

Solar industry groups praised the report for highlighting the industry's growth and potential, and expressed optimism that it signals potential reforms to tax policy and other potential incentives
Dive Insight:

Solar will play a critical role in decarbonizing the U.S. electric grid, but only if the pace of deployment and investment accelerates, the White House report stated.

Citing an as-yet unreleased analysis by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, the report indicates that deployment of solar must accelerate to three to four times its current rate by 2030 in order to decarbonize the electric grid by 2035. The report noted several congressional actions to accomplish this goal, including the extension of investment and production tax credits, the creation of new incentives for transmission and storage projects, and promoting community and residential solar for low- and moderate-income households.

"It’s encouraging to see the Biden administration continue to prioritize accelerating the transition to a renewable energy economy," Gregory Wetstone, president and CEO of the American Council on Renewable Energy (ACORE), said in a statement. "As the report makes clear, seizing this growth opportunity will require rapid transformation of the power sector and significant investment in a 21st century grid. But the payoff will be both climate protection and greater economic prosperity."

Tax reformation, Wetstone continued, will be a critical step in achieving the White House's goals. "We must move the renewable sector beyond the endless cycle of temporary stopgap measures to a stable, predictable, and long-term clean energy tax platform that helps decarbonize the economy while putting millions of Americans back to work," he said.

Alisa Petersen, manager of RMI's U.S. program, noted that although investor-owned utilities, municipalities and co-ops own 55% of the U.S.'s generating capacity, they currently own just 11% of utility-scale solar installations. Creating a direct pay tax credit, she said, would create more credit flexibility and allow these organizations to deploy more solar resources. One analysis, she said, projected that creating a solar production tax credit with a direct pay option would double emissions reductions, compared to extending the full value of existing credits.

The Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) also called for attention to trade policy while praising the report. In a note sent to SEIA members on Tuesday, SEIA president and CEO Abigail Roth Hopper noted that four companies have filed anonymous petitions for new tariffs on solar cell and module imports from Malaysia, Vietnam and Thailand.

"The disruptive and harmful impact of new trade petitions and CBP [U.S. Customs and Border Protection]*>> making sure that's the CBP she means* ***That's correct she spells it out earlier in the letter*** enforcement action cannot be understated," she wrote. "SEIA will continue to aggressively oppose any effort to unfairly favor one set of imports over another, or trade actions that hinder our industry’s ability to meet critical climate goals."

The planet is in peril. We’re building Congress’s strongest-ever climate bill

Let me be honest in telling you that this reconciliation bill, the final details of which are still being written, will not do everything that needs to be done to combat climate change. But by investing hundreds of billions of dollars in the reduction of carbon emissions it will be a significant step forward and will set an example for what other countries should be doing.

Here are some of the proposals that are currently in the bill:

Massive investments in retrofitting homes and buildings to save energy.

Massive investment in the production of wind, solar and other forms of sustainable energy.

A major move toward the electrification of transportation, including generous rebates to enable working families to buy electric vehicles and energy-efficient appliances.

The House returns to stalemate
https://www.politico.com/newsletters/weekly-transportation/2021/08/23/the-house-returns-to-stalemate-797283
AUGUST 23, 2021
"
WELCOME BACK, CONGRESS: The House comes back today for a short interruption to its August recess. At 11 a.m., the Rules Committee will meet to pass the rule governing debate on three key bills: the bipartisan infrastructure bill, H.R. 3684 (117); a voting rights bill named after the late Rep. John Lewis, H.R. 4; and the Democratic budget resolution, S. Con. Res. 14. Per Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s plan, House members will pass the rule tonight and then pass the budget resolution Tuesday before heading back to their districts.

As you may have heard, there is disagreement over the proper order in which things should proceed from there: Pelosi refuses to hold a vote on the infrastructure bill until the $3.5 trillion reconciliation bill is ready to be voted on, too. And the reconciliation bill can’t happen until after the budget resolution is enacted. Meanwhile, a group of nine House moderates is publicly — and reportedly dozens more are privately — pushing for the infrastructure bill to come to the floor now. They’re threatening to tank the vote on the budget resolution if the infrastructure bill doesn’t come to the floor along with it.

That’s the status as lawmakers head to the Capitol today.

The smart money’s on Pelosi: It’s never a good idea to bet against Pelosi’s whipping skills, and most people we’ve talked to think she’ll get her way. But it’s not just a handful of centrists in her caucus who would have liked a quicker vote on the infrastructure bill: The Chamber of Commerce and many others in the business community and in the transportation world are eager to see that money start making its way around the country.

What that means for the FAST Act reauthorization: Remember, swallowed up inside that infrastructure bill is the five-year reauthorization for surface transportation programs that expire Sept. 30. Pelosi said in a letter to Democrats on Saturday that “the House is hard at work to enact both the Build Back Better Plan and the bipartisan infrastructure bill before October 1st, when the BIF would go into effect." But the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials is worried that if Congress kicks the can now, they could run out of time and end up having to enact a short-term extension.

REC Silicon progressing towards 2023 Moses Lake restart as Biden policy agenda adds weight to business case
REC Silicon said it is continuing to work towards a restart of operations at its Moses Lake polysilicon production facility in the US, with the company buoyed by recent policy initiatives unveiled by US President Joe Biden.

Discussing the Norway-headquartered firm’s Q2 2021 results, CEO Tore Torvund said the company is exploring opportunities created by the president’s renewables agenda which could add further weight to a restart of REC Silicon’s fluidised bed reactor (FBR) technology.

“A US solar value chain will support the transition to renewable energy, create high-paying manufacturing jobs in the US and result in the restart of the REC Silicon Moses Lake facility,” Torvund said.

And in a conference call with analysts following the results disclosure, Torvund said the company was still working to restart production at Moses Lake in 2023 – some four years after the facility was shuttered in 2019 – but stressed this was dependent on REC Silicon securing sales in the region, either for solar-grade polysilicon or silicon anodes.

During the investor presentation, REC Silicon stressed the benefits of its FBR method, and in particular the results of its FBR-B technology that has been used to produce solar-grade polysilicon within the company’s joint venture in Yulin, China, itself a 20,000 metric tonne facility. REC Silicon said the FBR-B method posed numerous benefits over the Siemens process, including reduced energy consumption, and the company estimates it could operate facilities with around one-third of the workforce required to operate a facility using the Siemens method.

REC Silicon would look to upgrade around half of the FBR-A reactors at Moses Lake to FBR-B at a cost of around US$40 million, Torvund said.

But this would be contingent on the creation of a market for polysilicon outside of China, and in particular the US, which has been all but curtailed due to trade sanctions relating to the material.

REC Silicon noted that despite facilities in the US having the capacity to produce polysilicon for around 10GW of solar modules, there is currently no polysilicon being produced because there is no access to ingot or wafering capacity in the country. Almost all ingot and wafering capacity exists in China, which has a further knock-on effect on US solar manufacturing chains, as represented in the below slide used in REC Silicon’s presentation.

Torvund continued to point towards recent policy initiatives in the US that have been announced and progressed under President Biden, including both an extension of the investment tax credit (ITC) to help stimulate solar installations, and a prospective manufacturing tax credit proposed by Democrat senator Jon Ossoff last month.

Merk dette her!
That tax credit, proposed to be enshrined within the Solar Energy Manufacturing for America Act, would provide tax credits for each unit of material or component produced at facilities in the US. Under Ossoff’s proposals solar-grade polysilicon would receive a tax credit of US$3 per kilogramme, with further credits available for wafers, cells and modules produced inside the US.

Those incentives would be available until the end of 2028 before being gradually phased out until 1 January 2031.

Torvund said the initiatives “make sense” given the US’ ambitions to decarbonise its economy, however it is expected that the Ossoff proposals will not proceed in their current guise, and are more likely to be watered down to become a more straightforward tax credit available on investments made in facilities, rather than reimbursements on a per-unit basis.

Selskapet prises svÊrt lavt, sÄ oppsiden er enorm nÄr «made in America» materialiseres.

Sitt i ro i bÄten, folkens:)

The US company Group14 Technologies, a provider of lithium-silicon battery materials, and the Slovak battery company InoBat have entered into a cooperation to produce batteries with high energy density for automotive applications.

As InoBat announced, a letter of intent has been signed to use Group14's lithium-silicon anodes in vehicle batteries. This is apparently supposed to happen according to the principle of the individually adaptable battery cell developed by InoBat - As reported, InoBat uses AI and methods from pharmaceutical research to determine the right cell chemistry for every customer requirement.

In the case of lithium-silicon cells, however, it will initially be about small quantities. InoBat does not mention the exact volumes in the communication. There it says, however, that Group14 is able to produce 120 tons of the patented anode material SCC55TM per year at its plant in Woodinville, Washington. “While most of the factory's current production capacity is for the company's consumer electronics customers, the factory is also making EV-sized batches of material available to auto-focused customers as part of the qualification process,” InoBat writes.

"Our goal is to contribute to the global electrification effort," says Marian Bocek, CEO and co-founder of InoBat. "The partnership with Group14 will enable us to offer advanced energy solutions along the entire battery value chain for a large number of markets."

"To enable the electrification of anything, the successful and sustainable adoption of electric vehicles depends on breakthroughs in energy storage," said Rick Luebbe, CEO and co-founder of Group14 Technologies. "With this partnership with InoBat, we are taking a leap to enable automakers to match and exceed cost parity while delivering unparalleled performance and reducing CO2 emissions worldwide."

Group14 is currently working on expanding its capacities in order to be able to offer larger quantities than the current batch for automotive customers. In July, Group14 announced a joint venture with the South Korean company SK Materials. The sister company of the battery cell manufacturer SK Innovation wants to build a factory for lithium-silicon battery materials in South Korea together with Group14.

SK Materials develops and manufactures electronics, displays and semiconductor elements, so it is familiar with the processing of silicon. Construction of the $ 52 million Nabe facility is slated to begin in 2022. SK Materials has already invested in the company in the Series B financing round that Group14 completed in December 2020. Among others, BASF is also involved in Group14.
