With its commercial production fully underway, Group14 is expanding rapidly and is expected to double in size by the end of this year, kickstarting a clean economic recovery in Washington state. Later this year, Group14 plans to break ground on its second large-scale commercial factory co-located at REC Silicon's Moses Lake plant, enabling Group14 to reach capacity to meet global demand from the EV market.

Men kanskje E24?

And Group 14 already has plans for more manufacturing, expecting to double its capacity by the end of this year. It has partnered with solar polysilicon producer REC Silicon, taking advantage of its large capacity to produce silane gas. Group 14 also plans to break ground on a new factory at its Moses Lake site later in 2021. “We built our technology for real-world impact,” says CEO Rick Luebbe. “This commercial factory is the first big step forward towards fulfilling our mission, and we’re excited to play our part to ensure more equitable access to cleaner electric vehicles of all forms.”

"
Group14 Technologies, a battery-enhancing startup, announced Tuesday the launch of its new 27,000-square-foot factory on Maltby Road in Woodinville. The facility will house, in addition to manufacturing space, the company's corporate offices and a research and development center.

CEO Rick Luebbe said the company has been working on launching the factory for about a year.

"This used to be the OSW (Equipment) dump-truck factory, so from a bones perspective, great bones," Luebbe said. "But it had been loved pretty heavily."

Group14 currently leases pilot-scale manufacturing facilities in Moses Lake in central Washington. Group14 also aims to open a commercial-scale facility in Moses Lake in early 2023, which it plans to break ground on later this year.

The company, which was founded in 2015, makes an anode powder that can increase energy density by up to 50%, making batteries smaller, cheaper and longer-lasting. It says its flagship powder product, SCC55, doesn't require manufacturing changes from battery makers. Group14 raised $17 million in December.

Luebbe said Group14 will keep its existing offices in Woodinville for the time being, as well as its pilot-scale presence in Moses Lake. He said the research and development center in the new Woodinville factory will come online toward the end of the year.

A major goal for Group14 with the new facility is proving the company can scale its battery-enhancing technology beyond the pilot phase. The Woodinville factory will enable the company to manufacture its product on a commercial scale for the consumer electronics market, but the company also has its eyes on electric vehicles. Luebbe said the new Moses Lake factory will allow the company to scale even more.

Luebbe didn't disclose any clients of Group14, but he said the company has offices overseas in Korea and Japan.

Group14 currently has about 45 employees, about 35 of which are based in Woodinville. Luebbe said the Woodinville factory will eventually accommodate at least 50 employees, and the company plans to grow its total employee count to around 70 or 80 by the end of 2021.

"We designed a process that is cost-competitive in the United States," Luebbe said. "Our vision is to make this a domestic supply chain for the lithium battery space."

Expansion plans
The company says it has already delivered SCC55 to consumer electronics and vehicle manufacturers around the world, and that battery manufacturers are currently validating for use of the material in electric vehicle batteries.

Group14 looks to bring batteries back to the US

The newly-announced facility in the Pacific Northwest is capable of producing 120 tons per year of Group14’s lithium-silicon technology (SCC55). But what may be even more important is the fact that they’re doing it here in the States. The goal is to scale and to do so quickly. Co-Founder and CTO Rick Costantino said:

Yes, we are seeing more interest in our products, even from manufacturers that are further downstream like cell manufacturing, modules assembly, and developers. They have asked how they can get a lower embodied carbon product through the value chain.
