Intel's chip recovery plan could restore US manufacturing prowess
https://www.cnet.com/features/intels-chip-recovery-plan-could-restore-us-manufacturing-prowess/
NOVEMBER 18, 2021
"
..
The goal is to restore the US share of chip manufacturing, which has slid from 37% in 1990 to 12% today. "Over the decade in front of us, we should be striving to bring the US to 30% of worldwide semiconductor manufacturing," Gelsinger says.

Gelsinger has the ear of politicians, including folks in the Biden administration and the US Senate, which in June approved a bill to lavish $52 billion on US semiconductor companies that want to keep essential manufacturing in the US. On Wednesday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced an effort to push the legislation forward through both houses of Congress. If passed into law, it could knock about $3 billion off the $10 billion price tag for each new fab, a subsidy level Gelsinger says would match those of Taiwan and Korea.

7 out of 14 executives recruited from Samsung

By Kim Hyun-bin

Hanwha Solutions has been busy hiring outside experts in the solar, hydrogen and advanced materials sectors, the businesses it has identified as its next growth engines.

Jang was a director at Samsung Electronics' mobile division and in charge of developing Galaxy series batteries. She is credited with enhancing the battery lifespan for the Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 3

Industry watchers are saying that Hanwha is keeping an eye on the materials business, as the expertise of the newly joined Samsung executives is focused on developing materials related to the semiconductor business.

Recruitment of LG and Doosan personnel has followed behind Samsung. Park Jae-ho, director of Green Energy Solution (GES), previously worked for LG CNS. Newly appointed Hanwha Q Cells' new business sector director Yoon Joon-hwan worked at LG Electronics' solar business team.

From Doosan, the company hired M&A expert Shin Ju-hoon as a director of Hanwha Solutions' strategic and planning office

Samsung SDI to set up 1st EV battery plant in U.S. with Stellantis
13:22 October 22, 2021

Location not yet decided.

https://m-en.yna.co.kr/view/AEN20211022005300320

It will be Samsung SDI's first production plant in the U.S. market and its third overseas production base after the ones operating in Hungary and China. It has a domestic plant in the southern city of Ulsan.

The Korean company aims to secure a stable supply foothold in America ahead of the free trade agreement among the U.S., Canada and Mexico, which requires carmakers to sell EVs installed with locally produced parts. The trade deal will take effect in July 2025.

Silicon anode to become mainstream in batteries in 2027
Lee Sang Won

The global anode market for batteries was worth US$3.2 billion in 2020 but will grow to US$14.1 billion in 2027, according to analyst firm QY Research.

Silicon anode’s growth will stand out at 76.6% on average per year, accounting for 10.1% of all battery anodes in 2027, beating natural graphite’s 10%, according to the analyst firm’s estimate.

South Korea’s Hansol Chemical is planning to build silicon anode production facilities by the end of next year by spending around 85 billion won. It has been receiving technology for this from Samsung SDI.

Igjen; Samsung SDI

Greit å ha i bakhodet. Her er litt copy paste, limer inn deler av artiklene:

https://www.google.no/amp/s/www.teslarati.com/apple-car-production-toyota-supply-chain/amp/

(noen mnd gammel)

Last month, Apple was rumored to be talking to multiple EV component manufacturers in Korea. The California-based company reportedly talked with Korean battery manufacturers like LG Chem and SK Innovation. While in Korea, Apple also talked with Hanwha, a company that offers its expertise in petrochemical technology and advanced materials.

Hanwha also promises to provide innovative and sustainable solutions to its customers, hinting at Apple’s direction with its EV’s supply chain. Apple seems hyper-aware of the type of electric vehicle people want, down to its tiniest components. The fact that Hanwha was considered an option for the Apple Car’s supply chain means the tech company knows the significance of sustainability to customers today.

https://appleinsider.com/articles/21/08/09/apple-reportedly-in-talks-with-korea-ev-component-makers-for-apple-car

"Without partnerships with Korean vendors, Apple won't be able to complete its EV business plan. As far as I know, Apple has talked with LG, SK and Hanwha, but the talks are still in the early stages."

LG Energy Solution and SK Innovation have already been operating or are in the process of building battery-manufacturing facilities in the U.S., and Samsung SDI said that it is also considering building a battery plant there.

🤩 Jeg tror denne her eksploderer uansett.

Tai also said the US will begin a new “targeted tariff-exclusion process” to provide relief to US importers adversely affected by the tariffs that remain on nearly two-thirds – or roughly US$335 billion worth – of US imports from China, according to figures from PIIE.
On November 8, the USTR extended the expiration date for tariff exemptions on 81 out of 99 types of personal protective equipment for six more months, until May. But the tariff exemptions for the remaining 18 products will expire at the end of this month, including certain types of face masks, hand sanitisers and disposable gloves.

Despite high inflation in the US and growing pressure from business groups to reduce the tariffs on Chinese goods, Tai said on November 10 that the USTR was viewing the “Section 301” tariffs on Chinese goods as part of a strategy to seek an advantageous position to more effectively compete with China, according to Reuters.

“High tariffs are likely to persist in China-US trade in the long term,” said Shi Yinhong, an international relations professor at Renmin University and an adviser to the State Council. “But the level of the tariffs might be lower in the future compared with now.”
