Press Release
Beirut, Lebanon: Biometric fintech company Zwipe and Inkript, a digital security provider in the Middle East and Africa (MEA) region and a subsidiary of Resource Group, announce that they have launched a joint project to deliver the next generation contactless payments experience, Zwipe Pay ONE, to banks across the Middle East.

“Since we announced our partnership with Zwipe, and as a result of the surge in contactless payments, our customers are increasingly demanding safer and more secure payment options; more so today with the impact of the global COVID-19 pandemic on people’s actions towards the nature of cash. It is undoubtedly that security, convenience and contactless are the future of payments, and banks are ready to dive into new technologies that support consumers’ changing behaviors towards money, hygiene, comfort, and overall wellbeing”, says Riad Itani, Managing Director at Inkript.

He added: “Biometric payment cards powered by the Zwipe Pay ONE platform are the most compelling way to address this demand, in terms of both performance and cost. We are enthusiastic to take this next step with Zwipe.”

Inkript has placed an order to Zwipe, commencing small scale manufacturing of biometric payment cards based on the Zwipe Pay ONE platform with the goal of launching pilots, followed by mass-volume deployments with multiple banks in 2021.

“Inkript is a distinguished provider of smartcards and value-added services to some of the largest banks in the MEA. We are excited and proud that Inkript has selected Zwipe Pay ONE as its preferred biometric payment card platform and are now taking action together with us to provide secure payments solutions in the Middle East region,” says André Løvestam, CEO of Zwipe.

Norway-based Zwipe has found another important partner in its ramp up to biometric payment card commercialization. The company has announced that it has teamed up with Sweden-based Vopy, a provider of digital banking technology and a commercial card issuer.

The partnership will see Vopy issue biometric payment cards featuring the Zwipe Pay ONE fingerprint sensor solution. The cards will then be delivered via Zwipe’s partner network.

The first phase of the effort, beginning in the third quarter of this year, will entail a pilot program. Assuming all goes well, Vopy will aim for an initial commercial launch of 100,000 biometric payment cards in Q4, with another 500,000 to be issued in 2022.

Timing is everything.

IDEX Biometrics reported numbers in line with expectations so the most exciting recent event was the announcement after the quarter that Infineon, the global leader in smart card payment solutions, and IDEX shipped their first reference design for the next generation biometric smart card architecture. The design combines "Infineon’s new SLC38BML800 security controller with additional GPIO-interfaces and IDEX’s TrustedBio solution. They claim this is the best performing, lowest cost solution on the market and is targeted at card makers worldwide particularly those seeking a speedier time to market as much of the work has been done for the customer. The design enables fingerprint authentication with low latency, high accuracy, power efficiency, and a lower cost due to integration. Both IDEX and Infineon will be selling the solution and Infineon has already landed some customers, which we expect them to announce in the coming weeks. Infineon provides 65% of the security chips used globally for payment cards, and this is a more turnkey product to bring to their customer base."

While the majority of sales in Q2 were still to Bloomberg, the company is now building a backlog of purchase orders that are moving from seven digit numbers to eight digits. In addition to paying attention to Infineon, investors should keep an eye on IDEX’s major customer IDEMIA looking for announcements of customers it has landed. In addition, everything Zwipe sells uses IDEX. For example today, Middle East Payment Services (MEPS) and Zwipe announced they launched a pilot of cards based on the Zwipe Pay ONE platform to executives and decision makers at up to 20 banks and issuers in the Levant region. We also expect to more pilots and customer in China where fingerprint payment/medical/cryptocurrency cards are going to be a major market. China plans for digital wallets to be used at this year’s Beijing Olympics by residents of the Olympic Village. Not only will they be used for payments, but also other functions such as security access and ID can be combined in one card. Plans are for wallets to be rolled out throughout the country thereafter.

Idex Biometrics reports increasing demand for TrustedBio fingerprint sensors
New order follows shortly after the release of TrustedBio Max

The delivery of the new order is reportedly scheduled by the end of 2021, with Idex confirming it is experiencing an increased demand for its TrustedBio sensors for use in biometric payment cards.
TrustedBio was first launched in February 2020. The biometric-system-on-chip (BSoC) was designed to lower the manufacturing cost of biometric smart cards, with the goal of eventually enabling mass-market adoption.
In August 2020, Idex finished testing and integration, and began shipping its TrustedBio biometric fingerprint sensors.
Fast forward to April 2021, and Idemia announced the launch of the second iteration of its FCode biometric card, the first integrating Idex’s TrustedBio fingerprint sensor.
The BSoC was then updated by Idex earlier this month, to include fingerprint technology reportedly three to four times faster than competing solutions.
Moving forward, the company said it expects additional production orders to be placed before the end of the year from both existing and new customers.
Idex Biometrics’ revenues have risen substantially in the second quarter of 2021, with the firm reporting a 368 percent increase when compared to its Q2 last year, and 12 percent sequentially over its Q1 results in 2021.
