Press Release
Beirut, Lebanon: Biometric fintech company Zwipe and Inkript, a digital security provider in the Middle East and Africa (MEA) region and a subsidiary of Resource Group, announce that they have launched a joint project to deliver the next generation contactless payments experience, Zwipe Pay ONE, to banks across the Middle East.
“Since we announced our partnership with Zwipe, and as a result of the surge in contactless payments, our customers are increasingly demanding safer and more secure payment options; more so today with the impact of the global COVID-19 pandemic on people’s actions towards the nature of cash. It is undoubtedly that security, convenience and contactless are the future of payments, and banks are ready to dive into new technologies that support consumers’ changing behaviors towards money, hygiene, comfort, and overall wellbeing”, says Riad Itani, Managing Director at Inkript.
He added: “Biometric payment cards powered by the Zwipe Pay ONE platform are the most compelling way to address this demand, in terms of both performance and cost. We are enthusiastic to take this next step with Zwipe.”
Inkript has placed an order to Zwipe, commencing small scale manufacturing of biometric payment cards based on the Zwipe Pay ONE platform with the goal of launching pilots, followed by mass-volume deployments with multiple banks in 2021.
“Inkript is a distinguished provider of smartcards and value-added services to some of the largest banks in the MEA. We are excited and proud that Inkript has selected Zwipe Pay ONE as its preferred biometric payment card platform and are now taking action together with us to provide secure payments solutions in the Middle East region,” says André Løvestam, CEO of Zwipe.

How CBDCs Will Deliver Financial Inclusion?
In the introductory post of our series on CBDC (Central Bank Digital Currency), Vince Graziani, CEO, IDEX Biometrics, explains how the use of touch free payments and CBDCs will be made more secure through biometric authentication methods.
There has been an increasing level of interest in the concept of CBDCs, with many governments around the world currently keen to investigate the adoption of this new version of legal tender. Standing for Central Bank Digital Currency, CBDCs are set to transform the way we think about money, and offers some attractive benefits too. Simply put, it is a digital token of a nation’s official currency, meaning that it is both issued and managed by the country’s financial authority. Using CBDCs can not only simplify governmental policies regarding money, but could also play a vital role in increasing financial inclusion to those members of the population who are unbanked.
The Unbanked Billions
Even today, financial inclusion represents a significant challenge for financial institutions around the world. Studies show that globally a staggering 1.7 billion adults do not have a bank account, with the highest proportions of these unbanked citizens to be found in China (225 million unbanked), India (190 million), Pakistan (100 million) and Indonesia (95 million). Even the USA has its share of adults without a bank account, with one in five citizens (a huge 66 million people) remaining alienated from modern banking methods.
And being unbanked puts you in a vulnerable position. Without a bank account, receiving wages from a job can be problematic, and you will be unable to build up the good credit history needed for accessing loans or mortgages. Forced to rely solely on the use of cash, the unbanked will also be unable to enjoy the safer ways of saving money or making transactions.
The Power Of CBDCs
With the adoption of CBDCs, however, the financially excluded can enjoy more fiscal freedom than previously. As a digital currency, a CBDC can enable swift, convenient touch free payments that have become standard in the modern banking world. Typically stored on an internet-enabled device such as a smartphone or laptop, CBDC can be simply transferred when necessary, opening up new financial horizons for the unbanked.
Yet the current reliance on these internet-enabled storage methods could also be problematic. Known as “hot” or “soft” wallets, these means of storing money pose a risk to customers from hackers. A better, and more secure option is the roll out instead of “cold” or “hard” wallets, which do not rely on an online presence. This could be something as simple as a traditional style payment card, albeit one with stringent security measures built-in as standard. The developments in biometric technology mean that embedding a fingerprint sensor into each card would represent a cost-effective and convenient means of ensuring all CBDC touch free payments are securely made by the authorised user alone, while avoiding physical interaction with payment terminals. The other advantage of such wallets is that those without internet access would not be excluded, representing huge potential for growth in this market.
Secure Touch Free Payments For All
Whilst it certainly seems likely that we will be seeing the revolutionary CBDC systems in place before long, gaining the trust of customers will be crucial, particularly the unbanked, who are often suspicious of financial institutions. Biometrics could well be the answer: building confidence through rigorous authentication security and thereby improving financial inclusion for all.

Will challenger or traditional banks win the secure card payments battle?
Vince Graziani, CEO, IDEX Biometrics ASA shares his thoughts on the future of secure card payments.
US-based start-up Chime is now valued at $14.5 billion and is IPO-ready. In the UK, Revolut— which has more than 14 million customers—is worth more than long-standing high street bank NatWest. Meanwhile Papara, a Turkish banking challenger has grown to eight million users, and is gearing up for European expansion in 2021, with Germany as its first growth market. Also in Europe, Swedish financial service challenger Rocker has received €48 million in equity funding only 18 months after it launched. This presents some serious competition to traditional banks around the world.

Numerous central Chinese banks have opened up applications for picked individuals to activate digital yuan wallets, which is being read as another sign of progress in the country’s rollout of a central bank digital currency (CBDC).
Six of the country’s leading state-owned banks are inviting applications from users in Shanghai and Beijing, unlike in prior trials, which have been invite-only or relied on lottery-style draws for participation, according to state media reports.

While the application process has been opened to the public, individuals must be approved for the trial to participate. Participation is confirmed by an SMS message sent within 24 hours of the application, which comes with instructions on downloading and activating the digital yuan wallet.
To take part, users will be required to provide their full real names, phone numbers, email, and ID details, submitted via a QR code submission.
According to an official at the Postal Bank of China in Beijing, the application and onboarding process is expected to get smoother as more people sign up to participate: “Although the application criteria have not loosened up, we’ve opened it up to the public so the process is less restrictive than before. As the review process goes digital, the speed of getting applications approved will be much faster later on.”

Group brand and a worldwide leader in trusted identity solutions, LeGrand, the
global specialist in high-value-added products and solutions for commercial,
residential, and industrial buildings, and Southco, the leading global designer
and manufacturer of engineered access solutions. The coalition will bring a
highly advanced, cost-effective, biometric authentication solution to market.
The full capability of Zwipe's biometric card operates with existing access
control systems thereby removing the need to make any time-consuming and costly
adjustments to existing access control infrastructure.
The complete solution will be demonstrated for the first time at TRUSTECH in
Paris, on Zwipe's booth, from 30 November 2021.

Jerome Ajdenbaum, VP Digital Currencies & Fintech hos IDEMIA
Shailee Adinolfi, direktør for strategisk salg i ConsenSys
Den sikre offline CBDC-betalingsløsningen har blitt valgt ut som finalist i Monetary Authority of Singapore Global CBDC Challenge-hackathon blant over 300 bidrag har mottatt av arrangørene fra mer enn 50 land. Organisert i samarbeid med Det internasjonale pengefondet, Verdensbanken, Asian Development Bank, United Nations Capital Development Fund, FNs høykommisjon for flyktninger, FNs utviklingsprogram og Organisasjonen for økonomisk samarbeid og utvikling, søker Global CBDC Challenge innovative CBDC-løsninger for detaljhandel for å forbedre betalingseffektiviteten og fremme finansiell inkludering.
