Coca-Cola, Kellogg’s and Nestle vow to cut all plastic waste in bid to tackle ocean pollution
H&M, Mars and Unilever also promise to eliminate single-use plastics

Coca-Cola, Kellogg’s and Nestle are among 250 major brands pledging to cut all plastic waste from their operations – a move described by the UN as the most ambitious effort yet to fight plastic pollution.

The commitment comes as public pressure mounts on manufacturers and retailers to reduce the avalanche of plastic packaging clogging landfills and choking the oceans.

The signatories have promised to eliminate all single-use plastics, and to invest in new technology so all packaging can be recycled by 2025.

The initiative is the result of a partnership between The Ellen MacArthur Foundation and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

Erik Solheim, executive director of UNEP, described the commitment as “the most ambitious set of targets we have seen yet in the fight to beat plastics pollution.”

UNEP has estimated that if current pollution rates continue, there will be more plastic in the sea than fish by 2050.

Around 8 million tonnes of bottles and plastic waste fill the oceans each year, killing marine life and entering the food chain.

Most efforts to fight plastic pollution have focused on cleaning up the waste. But the latest commitment is designed to cut down on unnecessary plastic at its source.

“We know that cleaning up plastics from our beaches and oceans is vital, but this does not stop the tide of plastic entering the oceans each year,” said Ellen MacArthur, the record-breaking British sailor behind the new initiative.

“We need to move upstream to the source of the flow.”

Danone, H&M, L’Oréal, Mars and Unilever are among the other major brands to have agreed to get rid of plastic waste.

Three of the brands that have signed-up the commitment – Coca-Cola, PepsiCo and Nestle – were recently named the world’s worst plastic polluters, according to an index by the Break Free From Plastic movement.

In the US and Canada, these three companies accounted for 64 per cent of all plastic pollution identified in clean-up operations, according to the campaign group’s analysis.

“We are focused on improving the sustainability of all of our packaging, regardless of the type, and increasing the amount of recycled and renewable material,” said Ben Jordan, senior director of environmental policy at Coca-Cola.

Pavan Sukhdev, president of WWF International, said the new commitment was “an important step forward to join the efforts of businesses and governments around the world towards system-wide solutions”.

Last week, the European Parliament voted for a complete ban on single-use plastic items, including straws and cutlery, in a bid to curb pollution.

Unnecessary plastic products will be eradicated from 2021 under the plan.

Dette er ikke tomme løfter og noe som bare vil fordampe og forsvinne. Dette er "the real thing". Nå skjer det! Er overallt i verdens store medier nå. Her er et par artikler til fra henholdsvis Huffington Post og BBC. Innsamlingsteknologi og -systemer for mye mer plastembalasje enn kun plastflasker ligger i kortene her. Tomra er klar! :)

Da tikker nok en giga-nyhet sett i Tomra-perspektiv inn. Storbritannia vil nå skattlegge dem som tilvirker eller imoporterer plastembalasje som inneholder mindre enn 30% resirkulert materiale!

Britain to tax non-recycled plastic packaging

Published 1 Hour Ago

Reuters

LONDON, Oct 29 (Reuters) - Britain will levy a new tax on those who make or import plastic packaging with less than 30 percent recycled material, finance minister Philip Hammond said on Monday.

The measure, to be introduced in April 2022 subject to consultation, is an attempt to reduce waste and help tackle climate change.

"We will introduce a new tax on the manufacture and import of plastic packaging which contains less than 30 percent recycled plastic transforming the economics of sustainable packaging," Hammond announced as part of his annual budget.

"The tax will provide a clear economic incentive for businesses to use recycled material in the production of packaging which in turn will create greater demand for this material," the Treasury said, following Hammond's announcement.

Rupert Haworth, marketing director at Recycling Technologies, which converts waste plastic back into an oil to remake into plastic, said the move would encourage recycling.

"This (...) should stimulate new investment in plastic recycling innovation and capacity here in the UK and provide recycled plastic feedstock to the industry."

Hammond added that he would continue to study the use of single-use plastic in takeaway cups but had concluded that a tax would not be effective in encouraging widespread reuse. (Writing by Elisabeth O'Leary; editing by Kate Holton)

Tomra Sorting Recycling Creates Managerial Role To Strengthen Focus On New Plastics Economy

30TH OCTOBER 2018

New appointment reflects TOMRA’s full commitment to the ambitious vision for a circular economy

TOMRA Sorting Recycling has promoted Business Development Engineer László Székely to the newly-created post of Head of New Plastics Economy. This initiative reinforces TOMRA’s commitment to the aims of the New Plastics Economy (NPE) and will steer progress towards objectives which are differentiated from the company’s other business development activities.

TOMRA’s New Plastics Economy team will work to encourage the sorting and recycling of post-consumer plastics such as Polyolefins and Styrenes, to change the widespread practice of burning such materials or sending them to landfill. TOMRA is also committed to working with packaging producers to help make packaging more widely recyclable; to reduce the reliance of packaging production on raw materials; and to contribute to the drive for upgrading post-consumer plastics, so that there is greater use of recycled rather than virgin materials.

László Székely joined TOMRA brand TITECH (rebranded later as TOMRA Sorting Recycling) in 2012 after completing studies in waste management and contaminated site treatment at the Technische Universität Dresden, in Germany. Serving as a Business Development Engineer, László was TOMRA’s segment-champion for applications capable of sorting glass from different waste streams, with joint responsibility for development of the AUTOSORT Laser glass-sorting unit.

He was also closely involved in the planning and construction of the first two automatic MSW (municipal solid waste) sorting plants in Hungary, and assisted two big brands with upgrading for post-consumer plastics (Polypropylene). Since 2017 László has been involved in projects focusing on post-consumer polyolefin packaging, PET trays and working with packaging and converter businesses.

László Székely said: “I am delighted that my dedication and expertise have been recognized in this way because progress towards the New Plastic Economy is so important. I was really excited when I joined TOMRA, because I admired the company for being a technical pioneer and market leader, and seven years later I am still hugely excited by this company’s innovative spirit.”

TOMRA’s NPE work will also involve, at a senior level, Jürgen Priesters, Vice President, Head of Business Development Recycling, and Business Development Engineer Charlotte Glassneck.

The vision of the New Plastics Economy, which applies principles of the circular economy, was created by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation with three ambitions: to create an effective after-use plastics economy by improving the economics and uptake of recycling, reuse and controlled biodegradation for targeted applications; to drastically reduce leakage of plastics into natural systems (especially the ocean) and other negative impacts; and to decouple plastics from fossil feedstocks. Although these aims were launched in 2016 as a three-year initiative, they have built a momentum which will inspire action for many years to come.
