In focus: Reducing the EU’s dependence on imported fossil fuels
https://ec.europa.eu/info/news/focus-reducing-eus-dependence-imported-fossil-fuels-2022-apr-20_da
APRIL 20, 2022
“..

Accelerating the European Green Deal

The other two priorities to reduce dependence on imports identified under the RePower EU concept are already the two central pillars of EU energy policy: ramping up renewables and boosting energy efficiency.

The existing rules, agreed in 2018 and 2019, set targets for renewables and energy efficiency by 2030 that will deliver an overall 40% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, in line with EU commitments under the Paris Agreement. However, in 2021 the Commission tabled proposals to go further and faster in the coming decade, with a view to achieving a 55% reduction in emissions by 2030.

The RePower EU plan also identified the potential for moving considerably faster on wind and solar power. Based on an analysis of the state of play of solar energy across the EU, the Commission will present in May a solar strategy proposing a European Solar Rooftops Initiative to reap the benefits of rooftop solar energy. The plan also refers to the important role that biomethane can play (providing an additional 18bcm by 2030). Renewable hydrogen is also seen as a major new alternative supply source, with the potential to reach 10bcm by 2030, with scope for an additional 10bcm through imports.

The Commission is aware of the need to address the different bottlenecks that hinder the roll out of renewable energy projects. To address this issue, it will publish in May a recommendation on fast permitting for renewable energy projects, which aims to support the use of all flexibilities already granted by EU legislation and to remove remaining obstacles. Power purchase agreements is another identified area where guidelines at EU level would potentially accelerate change and ensure the most efficient development.

The European Commission is assessing whether the European Union could achieve a higher target of a 45 per cent share in renewable energy by 2030.

This would be instead of the currently proposed 40 per cent, which is aimed at accelerating the bloc's shift from Russian fossil fuels following the invasion of Ukraine.

"We are working on it full speed to take account, first of all the proposal of going from 40 to 45 per cent, but also in the context of higher energy prices," Mechthild Woersdoerfer, deputy director-general of the Commission's energy department, told a meeting of EU lawmakers on Wednesday.

Dozens of companies are calling on Congress to pass another infrastructure package focused on “fiscally-responsible clean energy investments," including tax credits for renewables, storage, nuclear + transmission, and investments in domestic supply chains.

Dear Members of Congress, April 26, 2022
We are major employers, innovators, and manufacturers across the U.S. economy who rely on strong traditional infrastructure to get our goods and services to market, affordable, reliable energy to power our operations, and long-term policy stability and incentives to plan and make investments to drive employment, innovation, and competitiveness.
We thank you for your leadership in passing the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), which provides long-overdue funding to repair America’s road and water infrastructure. However, the economic and energy infrastructure provisions in IIJA are only a partial down payment.
In order to realize the full benefits of the IIJA and the revitalization of American manufacturing that is necessary to catch up to and command growing global markets, America urgently needs further investments in its economic infrastructure, with clean energy and advanced manufacturing at its core.
Timing is of the essence. While we have built a strong foundation to grow a clean energy economy, uncertainty associated with delay is threatening to undermine our existing U.S. clean energy supply chain and investments. Congress must act without delay to both realize its future goals for clean energy and innovation while avoiding imminent harm to what we’ve built so far.
Accelerating the transition to affordable clean energy will strengthen America’s global competitiveness as businesses become less dependent on volatile, traditional energy markets, freeing up money to invest into innovation, manufacturing, and employment.
We are calling on you to swiftly come to an agreement on and pass an economic infrastructure package centered on the following fiscally-responsible clean energy investments:
1. Clean energy tax credits for electric transmission and utility-scale wind, solar, storage, carbon sequestration, nuclear, and clean hydrogen
2. Incentives and investments in domestic clean energy supply chains, advanced manufacturing, and government procurement
3. Electric vehicle (EV) and charging infrastructure tax credits for individuals (including used EVs and e- bikes) and corporate fleets
4. Residential solar and energy efficiency incentives and investments, especially in low-income communities
5. Rural development and resiliency investments in climate-smart agriculture and forestry.

Ambitious federal investments in these areas are necessary to achieve the following critical goals for our businesses, employees, consumers, and country:
1. Lower costs and volatility for U.S. businesses and families
2. Reduce supply chain delays and disruptions by growing domestic supply chains
3. Center and ensure equity and opportunity for disadvantaged, rural, and energy communities across the
country
4. Create U.S. jobs and strengthen U.S. global competitiveness in the industries of today and tomorrow by
driving American innovation, manufacturing, and deployment of reliable, affordable clean energy technologies to meet growing U.S. and global demand
As we look to the future, clean energy will be the backbone of America’s economic infrastructure and the key to the global competitiveness of American businesses. The time to invest in and build that economic infrastructure is now. America cannot afford to wait as other countries gain a competitive edge.

https://www.solarpowerworldonline.com/2022/04/chinas-share-of-worlds-polysilicon-production-grows-from-30-to-80-in-just-one-decade/

China’s share of world’s polysilicon production grows from 30% to 80% in just one decade

When U.S.-based Hemlock Semiconductor lost its top position in 2012, China had a share of just 30% in global polysilicon production. By 2021, this share had already risen to 76%, and to even more than 80% in the solar-grade sector. Since a gigantic expansion wave is currently underway in China, the country’s share in the global polysilicon output will grow even further: to more than 90%. In wafer, solar cell and module production, the Chinese industry has already reached such or still higher market shares.

“Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has opened the eyes for what it means to be economically dependent on a dictatorial regime. Western governments should not make the same mistake with China,” Bernreuter said. “It is high time to establish non-Chinese solar supply chains. China has demonstrated what the ingredients of success are: low electricity rates for power-hungry polysilicon and ingot production, loan guarantees for private investment, cost-efficient equipment manufacturing and strategic foresight.”

The top 10 polysilicon manufacturers for 2021 include:

Tongwei (China)

Daqo New Energy (China)
Wacker (Germany/United States)
Xinte Energy (China)
Xingjiang East Hope New Energy (China)

Qcells’ low carbon footprint certified panels to power one of the largest rooftop solar array in the Nordics

Swedish solar power developer Soltech to build a 6.1 MW solar system at Coop Sverige AB’s new goods terminal in Eskilstuna, Sweden, using Qcells’ certified CfP modules, made with recycled and low-carbon polysilicon.

APRIL 28, 2022

One of the leading solar power developers in the Nordics has chosen Qcells’ low carbon certified (CfP) solar modules to be installed at what will become one of the largest rooftop PV arrays in the Nordics.

Qcells, known as a globally successful full-service provider of clean energy solutions in the areas of solar systems, solar power plants, energy storage and electricity contracts, has signed a deal with Soltech Energy Solutions – a Swedish-headquartered solar power specialist – to supply its CfP-certified solar modules made with sustainably produced ingots and wafers from Norway and low-carbon polysilicon from Germany and the USA, for the installation, which will cover 38,000 square meters.

The customer, Coop Sverige AB, is a renowned supermarket chain with branches across Europe. The 6.1 MW solar system will be installed at Coop’s new fully automated goods terminal in the city of Eskilstuna, near Stockholm, Sweden. Half of the terminal’s electricity needs will be met by the solar array, which is expected to be finalised by the turn of the year 2022/2023.

For Coop, which prides itself on being Sweden’s most sustainable brand (according to the Sustainable Brand Index 2021), the solar installation from Soltech represents a double positive for its carbon footprint. By using CfP-certified modules from Qcells, half of the site’s high electricity consumption is met not only by solar power, but by panels produced in a clean, low-carbon manner.

For Qcells, this installation is testament to the company’s efforts to boost solar uptake across Europe, while also increasing the share of low-carbon products in its portfolio. The selected NorSun solar modules, the Q.PEAK DUO L-G6 425Wp, have carbon emissions of 386 kgCO₂/kW according to the Certisolis CfP certificate (calculation in line with the officially recognized CRE4 methodology), and are among the cleanest solar modules available on the market.

Not only are Qcells’ Q.PEAK DUO L-G6 modules produced using low-carbon materials, but are made with components sourced from a supply chain that is transparent and ethically sustainable thanks to the company’s partnership with NorSun – a Norwegian provider of low-carbon ingots and wafers.

Qcells’ work with NorSun in Sweden is only one strand of the company’s ongoing efforts to source lower-carbon components for its products.

Recently, Hanwha Solutions, the parent company of Qcells, became the largest shareholder in REC Silicon in the US. This move has helped Qcells to secure a stable supply chain of low-carbon polysilicon, which is produced using hydropower-based clean energy from REC Silicon’s facilities.

By integrating these facilities into its production capacities, Qcells ensures that all materials sourced for the manufacture of its cells and modules are fully traceable and sustainable. The strategic investment is part of Qcells’ new mission and ethos to deliver Completely Clean Energy for a greener tomorrow.

Selected Qcells modules have already achieved CfP-certification in France and Korea, and the range of modules that meet low-carbon standards is continuously increasing.

Albert Bergström, Head of Scandinavia sales at Qcells, said: “Qcells is proud to be working with Soltech and Coop on this flagship project. For one of Sweden’s largest food retailers to not only embrace solar, but to specifically request low-carbon certified solar modules produced using clean, traceable materials from Qcells, is a majorly positive signal for Scandinavia’s renewable energy landscape. We hope that this installation will inspire many other companies to seek energy security and carbon emission reduction solutions in the form of solar modules from Qcells.”

Soltech Energy Solutions Key Account Manager Jesper Ståhlberg added: “The use of low-carbon-certified solar modules is not government policy in Sweden, so it is heartening to see one of the nation’s most respected brands proactively go above and beyond for the sake of the climate. Soltech is proud to have been entrusted to construct and build this installation, and thanks Qcells for its continued technical excellence and commitment to providing products that meet our customers’ needs.”

Carsten Rohr, CCO of NorSun, commented: “Key to achieving full sustainability, energy security and ethical transparency in the solar energy industry are projects such as this, which bring together a number of Scandinavia’s most active companies in the clean energy space, alongside Qcells.

“NorSun is delighted to help Qcells, Soltech and Coop realize this project with solar modules that boast a certified low carbon footprint, and hopes that this rooftop installation, once complete, can act as a beacon of inspiration for other companies across Sweden and the rest of Europe.”

Fast charge rate beats US targets

Amprius Technologies has demonstrated a charging rate of 6 minutes to 80% from 0% state of charge for its silicon-based batteries (writes Nick Flaherty).

This exceeds the targets for 2025 set by the US government for charging a battery cell to 80% in less than 15 minutes.

Using silicon nanowires avoids the problems of the silicon expanding during charging by being rooted to the substrate, and reduces the thickness of the anode by half compared with using graphite. This thinner anode also helps provide fast charging and means the cell can be half the size of today’s graphite-based cells.

The nanowires have allowed Amprius to ship commercial lithium-ion cells with a specific energy of 450 Wh/kg and an energy density of 1150 Wh/litre.

“These results confirm the benefits of our Si-nanowire anode for EV applications, where fast charging and high energy density are essential,” said Jon Bornstein, chief operating officer of Amprius Technologies. “The need to shorten charge times extends well beyond the rapidly growing EV market and into the broader e-mobility markets, including micro-mobility and aviation.”

The nanowires enable an anode that is much lighter than conventional graphite anodes, and they have much higher conductivity owing to the high electrical continuity between the silicon and the current collector. The very low tortuosity, or the amount of porosity, of the anode structure helps boost the fast charging.

The fast charging technology is available on battery cells now in commercial production by Amprius.

Ex-Tesla Engineer Building Silicon Anode Plant As U.S. Amps Up EV Battery Production

Sila, a battery materials startup cofounded by one of Tesla’s earliest engineers and backed by Mercedes-Benz, is building a large-scale factory in Washington state to make battery anodes that use silicon instead of graphite which the company says will make electric vehicle battery packs more energy-efficient and, eventually, cheaper.

The Alameda, California-based company, led by CEO Gene Berdichevsky, is converting a 650,000-square-foot industrial building on 160 acres in Moses Lake, Washington, into a high-tech factory that will produce enough anode materials for batteries in up to half a million electric vehicles annually in its first phase. Over time the plant, which will begin operations in 2024, could scale up to produce enough of its silicon-based anodes for batteries in millions of EVs. Power for the facility will be zero-carbon, supplied by Washington’s hydroelectric grid.

Investment in the initial phase will be in the “low nine figures” and the full build-out will be “well over $1 billion,” Berdichevsky tells Forbes, without elaborating. The company has said Daimler and BMW will be the first users of its materials in high-end electric models.

“First and foremost we're pushing for higher energy density,” he said, estimating that Sila’s anodes provide up to a 20% improvement in energy efficiency to the best current lithium-ion battery packs when graphite anodes are replaced. They can also enable faster charging or hold down pack costs by reducing the number of cells needed to go the same distance. “If you've got a vehicle that has 1,000 cells in it and it gives you the range you want when each battery stores 20% more energy you can go from 1,000 cells to 800 cells. Now the vehicle is lighter and it's cheaper to make.”
Sila’s news comes a day after the U.S. Energy Department said it’s providing $3.1 billion in federal funds from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill to dramatically boost domestic production of advanced batteries and materials for electric cars and trucks. The Biden Administration wants EVs to make up half of all U.S. auto sales by 2030 and hopes expanded U.S. production of vehicles and batteries will help meet that goal. Sila will likely apply for some of the federal funds for its Moses Lake project, assuming it meets the DOE’s requirements.

Tesla is currently the biggest U.S. maker of EV batteries, producing them at its massive Gigafactory in Nevada and ramping up output at its new Giga Texas plant in Austin that will produce the company’s new, bigger 4680 battery cell, along with vehicles. General Motors, Ford, Volkswagen and other automakers have announced plans for new battery plants, while cell suppliers including Samsung, LG and Panasonic are also increasing U.S. production.

“President Biden’s historic investment in battery production and recycling will give our domestic supply chain the jolt it needs to become more secure and less reliant on other nations—strengthening our clean energy economy, creating good-paying jobs, and decarbonizing the transportation sector,” Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm said on Monday.

Berdichevsky was Tesla’s seventh employee, hired in 2004 as principal battery engineer for the Roadster, the company’s first attempt at an electric car. By the time it came out, he was more interested in finding new ways to make the lithium-ion batteries he was working with a lot cheaper and more efficient. He cofounded Sila in 2011 and has raised $925 million over the past decade, including about $600 million in early 2021, to develop its silicon-based technology and fund the first phase of the Washington plant.

Anodes are one of the four main elements of a battery, along with the cathode, separator material and electrolyte. The active material it’s coated with, typically graphite, lets electric current flow through the external circuit and also allows absorption of lithium ions from the cathode. Currently, most anode materials for lithium-ion cells are sourced from Asia, Berdichevsky said.

“This plant would be the first kind of world-scale plant for us. We're going to use it as a blueprint and replicate it in the U.S. and we're going to replicate it around the world, in Asia and in Europe,” he said. “We'll start by getting adopted in high-end vehicles and our partnership with BMW and Mercedes … but as production increases this will get adopted across many, many OEMs in many different use cases.”

Along with Mercedes-Benz, investors in closely-held Sila include 8VC, Bessemer Venture Partners, Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, Coatue, In-Q-Tel, Matrix Partners, Sutter Hill Ventures and T. Rowe Price funds.

Woodinville, Wash.-based Group14 Technologies has raised $400 million in venture capital that will supercharge the commercialization of its battery technology.

The Series C round was led by Porsche AG, which plans to use the company’s technology in some of its electric vehicles. Group14 has developed a silicon-carbon composite material that can replace the graphite anodes in lithium-ion batteries, improving their performance by 50% and providing faster recharging times.

The new funding will help build a manufacturing facility in Eastern Washington’s Moses Lake hat should come online in the second half of next year. Group14 already has a facility in that area that’s working on engineering and R&D. Luebbe said he likes the location because there’s lots of land, a good labor pool and access to clean, affordable hydro-power.

“It’s kind of an ideal location and, frankly, not just for us,” Luebbe said. “I think Moses Lake is going to be a center of battery ecosystems.”

May 4 (Reuters) - Electric vehicle battery startup Group14 has raised $400 million from a group of investors led by Germany's Porsche (PSHG_p.DE), the firm said on Wednesday.

Part of that money, which boosts Group14's valuation to more than a billion dollars, will be used to build a second battery materials factory near the firm's current site in Woodinville, outside Seattle, Chief Executive Officer Rick Luebbe said in an interview.
