Statkraft has as of July 5th, 2022, given the Notice to Proceed to move ahead with the installation of the additional 3 rings, bringing the total installation to 2MWp. The floaters will be located on the Banja reservoir in Albania, in addition to Statkraft’s 72-megawatt hydropower plant. The system will generate renewable energy for the Albanian national electricity grid with almost 6400 solar panels. “We are very pleased with the additional construction at the Statkraft’s Banja reservoir. It will be the first multi-ring Ocean Sun system and will position Ocean Sun toward larger utility-scale projects. Statkraft has on the 22nd of October 2021 granted Ocean Sun a Notice to Proceed (NTP) regarding the reconstruction of the first floater on the Banja hydro powerplant in Albania.


About the project:

Ocean Sun and Statkraft have signed an agreement to construct a 2 MWp floating solar power plant on Statkraft’s 72-megawatt hydropower plant in Banja, Albania. The first 0.5 MWp floater was successfully built and connected to the Albanian grid in June 2021. However, only a few weeks later the floater experienced an incident during a tornado, partly submerging the ring and two connected barges. Following the incident, Ocean Sun has conducted a thorough root cause analysis and proposed design modifications and new operational practices that have been verified by expert meteorologist and naval architects from well reputed third-party institutions. The first floater will be reconstructed shortly and the remaining 1.5 MWp is expected in a second phase during 2022.

On the 1st of April 2022, Banja Floating Solar Plant’s first floater restarted commercial operations after an incident last summer. This project is part of an R&D investment by Statkraft, based on Ocean Sun’s innovative floating solar technology.

The floater is located on the Banja reservoir in Albania, in addition to Statkraft’s 72-megawatt hydropower plant and is now generating renewable energy to the Albanian national electricity grid. The first unit covers nearly 4,000 square meters and has an installed capacity of 500 kWp, with almost 1600 solar panels.

“We are very pleased with the construction of the Ocean Sun flagship floater at the Statkraft’s Banja reservoir. A similar system was damaged last year. The new reinforced design is based on updated meteorological predictions. I wish to thank all colleagues in Ocean Sun and the Statkraft teams both in Norway and Albania for the excellent cooperation and unwavering determination. I also extend my gratitude towards the contractor Doko. Lastly, I wish to thank DNV for the instrumental role in the verification of the design. Many lessons were learned in the aftermath of the incident and the new floater gives Ocean Sun another opportunity to demonstrate the high performance and operability of the Ocean Sun innovative membrane FPV technology. We also look forward to the second stage of the project during which three additional floaters are planned to be implemented,” says Bþrge Bjþrneklett, CEO and founder of Ocean Sun.

– Statkraft har 340 vannkraftreservoarer rundt omkring i verden. Alle er ikke aktuelle for flytende solenergi, men mange kan vére det, sier Bjþrneklett.
– Hvis erfaringene med disse anleggene er positive, og det er de jo sĂ„ langt, sĂ„ vil disse anleggene fort kunne gi store tall. Skal du ha 100 megawatt pĂ„ hvert vannkraftverk sĂ„ stĂ„r du teoretisk sett foran en kjempeutbygging, sier BjĂžrneklett.
– Den typiske inntekten fra et anlegg er pĂ„ 50.000 dollar (462.000 kroner) per installerte megawatt, ifĂžlge konsernsjefen.

Med forbehold om regnefeil og/eller ren idioti, vil vel et 100MW anlegg alene kunne generere ca 50 millioner i inntekt for Osun, noe som tilsvarer omlag 15,- i kurs per anlegg i denne stĂžrrelsesorden?

I tillegg kommer alle prosjektene som er pÄ gang i Korea, KanariÞyene, Kina, Malaysia etc.
Dette kan jo bli rett sÄ bra, men regner med at det fremdeles vil ta litt tid.

TIRANA (Albania), July 8 (SeeNews) - Statkraft has started the final phase of a project for the installation of a floating solar plant at the Banja reservoir in southeastern Albania, Norwegian floating solar technology developer Ocean Sun, which built the unit, said.

Statkraft has launched the installation of the last three floating units on the reservoir, which is located near the company's 72 MW Banja hydropower plant, Ocean Sun said in a press release earlier this week.

These units are additional to a floating ring installed earlier. The solar plant unit relaunched operations of April 1 after an incident last summer.

The four floating units have a combined capacity of 2 MWp with almost 6,400 solar panels.

The solar power plant project has a total investment cost of about 2 million euro ($2.03 million), according to an earlier statement by Statkraft.

Statkraft, a leading company in hydro power internationally and Europe’s largest generator of renewable energy, is present in Albania through its wholly-owned subsidiaries Devoll Hydropower and Statkraft Renewables Albania.

Our project team is now in the ordering phase of the components and aim for a start of construction by end-August. 🔜

The total installed capacity of the project is 2MWp and the 4 rings are 70m in diameter or almost 4000m2 – about 2/3rds of a football pitch - each! 🏟 A total 4 ring FPV will generate 2.8 GWh annually and power more than 500 Albanian households.
