TORONTO — Certarus, Superior Plus Corp.’s (“Superior”) low carbon energy solutions business, (TSX: SPB), announces it has placed an order for USD $54 million of Mobile Storage Units (“MSUs”) with longtime partner, Hexagon Agility (“Hexagon“), a business of Hexagon Composite. This is the single largest order of MSUs ever placed with Hexagon with deliveries expected to commence in Q1 2024.

As the industry leader in on-road low carbon energy distribution, Certarus enables customers without pipeline access to transition to lower carbon energy, including compressed natural gas (“CNG”), renewable natural gas (“RNG”), and hydrogen to help rapidly drive decarbonization efforts.

– Markedet er veldig sterkt

Hexagon Agility har fått sin største kontrakt noensinne for frakt av naturgass. Selskapet skal levere containerløsninger til en verdi av 550 millioner kroner.

Hexagon Agilty er Hexagon Composites viktigste datterselskap. I første kvartal hadde Agility en omsetning på nesten 900 millioner kroner, av konsernets totalomsetning på 1,1 milliard kroner. Hexagon Agility leverer komposittanker og drivstoffsystemer til kjøretøy og tanker til lagring og transport av naturgass.

Nå har en av selskapet viktigste kunder bestilt distribusjonssystemer til lagring og transport av naturgass for 550 millioner kroner. Dette er Hexagon Agilitys største kontrakt i dette segmentet noensinne.

– Dette markedet er veldig sterkt for tiden, og vi ser for oss at det vil styrke seg ytterligere fremover, sier konsernsjef Jon Erik Engeset i Hexagon Composites. 

Gradvis bedre marginer

Ti tross for at markedet er sterkt, og konsernet rapporterte en vekst i Hexagon Agility på 23 prosent i første kvartal, har marginen vært veldig svake etter pandemien. I første kvartal falt EBITDA-marginen til 4 prosent, mens målet er å nå 15 prosent i 2025.

«De to viktigste grunnene til de dårlige marginene i Hexagon Agility er litt svakere volumutvikling og fortsatt noen problemer i forsyningskjeden. Dette medfører ekstrakostnader, og at vi ikke får utnyttet apparatet vårt slik vi ønsker,» sa Engeset, da førstekvartalstallene ble presentert i mai.

– Hvordan påvirkes marginene av denne kontrakten?

– Jeg kan ikke kommentere marginene med tanke på at vi rapporterer kvartalstall i neste uke. Men vi sa på førstekvartalspresentasjonen at vi forventer gradvis bedrede marginer, og vi har ikke gått tilbake på det utsagnet, sier Engeset.

Hexagon Agility receives significant order for Mobile Pipeline® next generation TITAN modules from Certarus

10 August 2023: As previously disclosed, Hexagon Agility, a business of Hexagon Composites, signed a multi-year agreement in March 2021 with Certarus, a leading full-service provider of bulk gas transport, to supply Mobile Pipeline® modules for compressed gases.

Under this agreement, Hexagon Agility has received an additional order estimated at USD 54 million (approx. NOK 553 million). This is the largest single order for Mobile Pipeline ever received.

Driving energy transformation

Higher capacity, lighter design, lower emissions

TITAN 450 enables the safe transport of almost half a million standard cubic feet of CNG/RNG in a 40-foot module, resulting in a lower carbon footprint and reduced operating costs. The new product employs the latest technology in Type 4 composite cylinders and high-strength frame design. It delivers 25% greater gas capacity, while being 20% lighter in the same 40-foot length.

As with the current generation of TITAN products, the modules are approved for a variety of gases including CNG, RNG, Helium, and Hydrogen.

Timing

Deliveries of the new orders will commence in Q1 2024.

Meglerhus vraker kjøpsanbefaling to uker før kvartalstallene kommer

Både DNB Markets og SpareBank 1 Markets nedgraderer Hexagon Composites to uker før offentliggjøringen av kvartalstallene.

DNB Markets nedgraderer Hexagon Composites fra kjøp til hold, samtidig som de løfter kursmålet fra 30 kroner til 31 kroner. Det fremgår av en analyse fra meglerhuset onsdag kveld.

Bakgrunnen for nedgraderingen skyldes aksjens kursoppgang på nesten 50 prosent i løpet av den siste måneden, justert for utdelingen av Hexagon Purus-aksje. Meglerhuset mener at den kraftige oppgangen har spist opp oppsidepotensialet, skriver TDN.

DNB Markets forventer likevel en raskere bedring i marginene for Hexagon Agility og har derfor justert opp ebitda-estimatene for 2023 med 8 prosent, opplyses det.

I tillegg til DNB Markets sin nedgradering, har også SpareBank 1 Markets valgt å nedgradere Hexagon Composites fra kjøp til nøytral. Samtidig kutter de kursmålet fra 33 til 30 kroner. 

Meglerhuset mener at verdsettelsen av Hexagon for øyeblikket virker rimelig, etter den betydelige aksjekursoppgangen i juli. SpareBank 1 Markets har også en tro på at Hexagon kan levere bedre resultater for andre kvartal enn tidligere fryktet, da forstyrrelsene i forsyningskjeden ser ut til å ha avtatt siden første kvartal, ifølge TDN.

26 July 2023: Hexagon Agility, a subsidiary of Hexagon Composites, has received orders for Mobile Pipeline® modules and renewable natural gas (RNG) fuel systems at a total value of USD 31 million (approximately NOK 310 million) from a major refuse fleet in North America. The modules will be used in mobile refueling of the company’s growing fleet of RNG vehicles.

About the market

RNG results in the greatest reduction of greenhouse gas emissions of any clean energy solution available today in the transport sector. In addition, RNG is supported by a vast pipeline infrastructure in North America, allowing for immediate deployment of this cost effective and commercially available technology. Research shows that RNG derived from agricultural waste can offer more than 200% improvement in well-to-wheel emissions compared to diesel and is the only carbon negative fuel available. 

According to NGVAmerica and the Coalition for Renewable Natural Gas, in 2022, 69% of all on-road fuel used in natural gas vehicles was RNG. This number grew by 17% compared to 2021 volumes, increasing 218% over the last five years.

Even With OEM Compromise, Some in Trucking Industry Continue ACF Opposition

Since its inception, the Advanced Clean Fleet Rule (ACF) has turned enough heads to cause whiplash among many fleets that operate in California. Touted by some as one of the most ambitious regulatory programs in the history of the California Air Resources Board (CARB), ACF aims to accelerate the adoption of zero-emission vehicles, including all vehicles over 8,500 lbs. that operate within the Golden State.

After filing a suit against CARB last July and then withdrawing it two months later, the Truck and Engine Manufacturers Association (EMA) has changed its position on the matter. The group, along with Cummins, Daimler Truck North America, Ford, General Motors, Hino, Isuzu, Navistar, PACCAR, Stellantis N.V., and Volvo Group North America, recently entered into an agreement with CARB with the intention of helping fleets with the transition to the cleaner vehicle technologies mandated by ACF.

Både Hexagon Purus og Hexagon Composites har forøvrig allerede nå fulle ordrebøker til godt inn i 2024 når det gjelder produkter til transport og lagring av gass. The new Clean Truck Partnership agreement offers flexibility to address public health of Californians and the needs of fleet manufacturers that build the technology required for the transition to zero-emissions

SACRAMENTO – The California Air Resources Board announced a Clean Truck Partnership today with the nation’s leading truck manufacturers and the Truck and Engine Manufacturers Association that advances the development of zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) for the commercial trucking industry, which includes flexibility for manufacturers to meet emissions requirements while still reaching the state’s climate and emission reduction goals.

The Clean Truck Partnership, which includes Cummins, Inc., Daimler Truck North America, Ford Motor Company, General Motors Company, Hino Motors Limited, Inc., Isuzu Technical Center of America, Inc., Navistar, Inc., PACCAR Inc., Stellantis N.V., Truck and Engine Manufacturers Association, and Volvo Group North America, marks a commitment from the companies to meet California’s vehicle standards that will require the sale and adoption of zero-emissions technology in the state, regardless of whether any other entity challenges California’s authority to set more stringent emissions standards under the federal Clean Air Act. In turn, CARB has agreed to work collaboratively with manufacturers to provide reasonable lead time to meet CARB’s requirements and before imposing new regulations and to support the development of necessary ZEV infrastructure.

“The unprecedented collaboration between California regulators and truck manufacturers marks a new era in our zero-emission future, where we work together to address the needs of both the trucking industry and the Californians who deserve to breathe clean air,” said CARB Chair Liane Randolph. “This agreement makes it clear that we have shared goals to tackle pollution and climate change and to ensure the success of the truck owners and operators who provide critical services to California’s economy.”

EMA President Jed Mandel said, “This agreement reaffirms EMA’s and its members’ longstanding commitment to reducing emissions and to a zero-emissions commercial vehicle future and it demonstrates how EMA and CARB can work together to achieve shared clean air goals. Through this agreement, we have aligned on a single nationwide nitrogen oxide emissions standard, secured needed lead time and stability for manufacturers, and agreed on regulatory changes that will ensure continued availability of commercial vehicles. We look forward to continuing to work constructively with CARB on future regulatory and infrastructure efforts designed to support a successful transition to ZEVs.”

The terms of the Clean Truck Partnership include:

* CARB will align with EPA’s 2027 regulations for nitrogen oxide emissions. CARB also will modify elements of the 2024 NOx emission regulations for which manufacturers will provide offsets as necessary to maintain California’s emission targets.

* CARB commits to providing no less than four years lead time and at least three years of regulatory stability before imposing new requirements. 

* Truck manufacturers commit to meeting CARB’s zero-emission and criteria pollutant regulations in the state regardless of any attempts by other entities to challenge California’s authority. 

The Clean Truck Partnership comes as California prepares for implementation of its landmark rules that put in place a phased-in transition toward 100% sale and use of zero-emissions technology for medium- and-heavy duty vehicles under CARB’s Advanced Clean Trucks and Advanced Clean Fleets rule by 2045. In March, the Biden administration approved California’s waiver under the federal Clean Air Act that allows the state to become the first in the world to require zero-emissions technology for trucks. By working together, California air quality regulators and truck manufacturers will ensure that the technology, infrastructure and supply will be available to meet the state’s ambitious clean air goals.

28 June 2023: As previously disclosed, Hexagon Agility, a business of Hexagon Composites, signed a master services agreement in October 2019 with UPS, the world’s premier package delivery company and a leading provider of global supply chain management solutions, to supply renewable natural gas (RNG) fuel systems for medium- and heavy-duty trucks.

Under this agreement, Hexagon Agility has received additional 2023 orders of USD 20.9 million (approx. NOK 225 million) for delivery of RNG fuel systems for heavy- and medium-duty trucks. This is in addition to the USD 19 million (approx. NOK 205 million) of previously announced orders from February 2023.

Nyheten om at Hexagon Composites skal dele ut 25% av de utestående aksjene i Hexagon Purus som utbytte til sine aksjonærer, er jo gedigen. Har selv tenkt en stund at jeg egentlig burde hatt noe mer direkte eksponering i Purus og nå løser jo dette seg 'av seg selv'. Kursutviklingen lar jeg ligge, bortsett fra å si at jeg bekjenner tilhørighet til de som synes den begredelige kursutviklingen i Hexagon Group aksjene i kjølvannet av at Hexagon Purus børsmeldte kontrakten verdt inntil 21.5 milliarder NOK med HINO Trucks/Toyota, grenser til det absurde.

Forøvrig utvikler motivasjonen for å poste på aksjeforum seg omvendt proporsjonalt med været. Har også vært relativt stille på nyhetsfronten fra Hexagon Composites i det siste, men denne artikkelen helt tilbake fra 26.mai, bør man få med seg. In Germany, the first structures of a hydrogen network are to be set up in the coming years. On Wednesday, the Federal Cabinet passed an amendment to the Energy Industry Act with regulations on the legal and regulatory framework. In the first stage, the hydrogen core network will include important infrastructure that should go into operation by 2032, said Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habeck (Greens) on Wednesday. He called the law an important step.

The law regulates the approval of such a core network by the Federal Network Agency. The aim is to connect all central hydrogen locations and to take all regions of Germany into account. The operators of long-distance gas networks are to work out the hydrogen core network in the coming months, according to Habeck. Afterwards there will be a discussion with the public, the countries and various market participants.

The Federal Network Agency will finally approve the design of the network. In a second stage, a comprehensive hydrogen network development plan is to be anchored in the Energy Industry Act by the end of the year.

"Our goal is the rapid ramp-up of the hydrogen market," said the minister. This should advance decarbonization, especially in economic sectors with high greenhouse gas emissions.

Opportunity for hydrogen pure players

The electrolyzers are important for the production of green hydrogen. Nel and Plug Power, among others, manufacture such devices. As a manufacturer of high-pressure vessels and systems, Hexagon Purus could also benefit from the development of the hydrogen network. After all, the energy source that is to be transported through the pipeline in Germany must be transported and stored.

Germany's hydrogen plans are progressing. Many pure players could benefit from this in the future. Risk-conscious investors with foresight can put a few pieces of the electrolysis specialist Nel and the hydrogen high-pressure vessel manufacturer Hexagon Purus in their depot.

Tydligvis bare meg som er imponert over hva Hex leverer og hvilket eventyr Purus har utviklet seg til.

Enig i alt, men vil også nevne Hexagon Ragasco som leverte EBITDA 25% og EBIT 20.2% av omsetning på 188 millioner NOK i kvartalet.

Med en eierpost på 68.39% av aksjene i Hexagon Purus som ekspanderer og utvikler seg på mektig vis, i tett samarbeid med ditto partnere, ser jeg lyst på fremtiden til Hexagon Composites. Også når det gjelder egen virksomhet i divisjonene Hexagon Agility, Hexagon Ragasco og Hexagon Digital Wave.

Når det gjelder Hexagon Agility, rammes man som bilbransjen generelt fortsatt av problemer i forsyningskjedene (komponentmangler, prisstigning), men sier i dag at man nå ser en gradvis bedring her. Videre venter man på Cummins's 15 l gassmotor. Kommer i 2024 og vil ifølge ledelsen være en 'game changer' som innebærer at gassdrift med mye lavere klimagassutslipp (i særdeleshet når gassen er RNG/fornybar naturgass) kan erstatte diesel også innen long haul/det aller tyngste tungtransportsegmentet. Og OEMs og 'fleets' i f.eks. California, for å nevne de som har kommet/gått lengst, kan ikke velge om de vil kutte utslipp eller ei. De må kutte utslipp innen bestemte tidsfrister, gitt av politiske vedtak. Når det gjelder Mobile Pipeline (som er en del av Hexagon Agility) er etterspørselen veldig høy, og ledelsen rapporterte i dag om full ordrebok her for 2023 og ordrer inn i 2024.

Så det meste ser bra ut når det gjelder fremtidsutsikter. Det Hexagon Composites MÅ levere på når det gjelder egen virksomhet, er gradvis forbedring av marginene innen Hexagon Agility. Hexagon Composites har en uttrykt målsetning om EBITDA > 10%. I dag (ca. 7.35%) er det et stykke dit. Så sent som 17.april i år tiltrådte Hans Peter Havdal som ny CEO i Hexagon Agility, og Havdal er dermed den som fremover skal lede arbeidet der forbedring av lønnsomheten innen Hexagon Composites's største divisjon vil være 'key'. Havdal bekler fra mars i år samtidig rollen som COO i Hexagon Group etter tidligere å ha vært styremedlem i Hexagon Group. Sagt med andre ord, en ny leder man opplagt har stor tro på så blir spennende å se hva Havdal får til.

"skuffelsene" var meldt i Q4, men folk håpet kanskje på tydeligere tegn på trendskifte med høyere priser og lavere kostnader (=økt inntjening)?
Utsettelser av salg (til ny motor kommer i 2024) for heavy trucks var meldt tidligere.
Største take away synes jeg at Purus sitt hårete mål om 4-5 mrd i omsetning i 2025 er godt i rute. (dog med 1 år forsinkelse i positiv cashflow derfra).
Betrygende at Digital Wave lever positive resultater, godt å ha med at et vekstområde leverer mens det vokser.
Hva er de nye mørke skyene dere andre ser? (siden aksjekursen går nedover)

Problemet her nå og hos andre innen fornybart er at det er vrient å få landet store kontrakter i lavkonjuktur tider. Selskaper vegrer seg og holder igjen. På sikt har jeg knalltro, men denne nedgangen vi opplever nå er naturlig og jeg holder meg på sidelinjen en periode nå.

Hexagon Agility’s fuel systems have a useful life of 20 years. On average fleets will retire vehicles after 10 years of operation - long before the end-of-life of the fuel system. Hexagon Agility receives new order from Certarus for Mobile Pipeline® modules

2 May 2023:  In March 2021, Hexagon Agility signed a multi-year agreement with Certarus Ltd, North America's leading full-service provider of bulk gas transport, to supply distribution modules for compressed natural gas (CNG), renewable natural gas (RNG), and helium applications.  

Under this agreement, Hexagon Agility has received an order for Mobile Pipeline® TITAN 4 modules. The order represents an estimated total value of USD 4.2 million (approx. NOK 45 million).  

The new modules will be used by Certarus to transport low carbon CNG for use in hard-to-abate industrial applications; provide critical utility support during demand peaks and pipeline maintenance outages; connect RNG production projects to natural gas sales pipelines; and connect the production of helium to distribution networks and end-use customers.  

About the market  

As a leader in the industry, Certarus enables customers without pipeline access to transition to lower carbon CNG and adopt clean RNG rapidly driving the decarbonization of industrial and fleet operations.  

Recurring helium shortages in recent years have driven new helium exploration and production, especially in the United States and Canada.  Hexagon Agility's high-capacity Type 4 composite trailers deliver large payloads to allow Mobile Pipeline® operators like Certarus to provide the most cost-effective and scalable solution for long-haul applications.

BENTONVILLE, Ark. & SAN RAMON, Calif. & COLUMBUS, Ind.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Walmart is reaching a new destination in its goal for a zero-emissions transportation fleet with the debut of the first North American—and the first of five— 15-liter compressed natural gas engine that will be incorporated into Walmart’s private fleet. The X15N™ engine is supplied by Cummins and fueled by Chevron with compressed natural gas (CNG) linked to renewable natural gas. The Walmart truck will make its inaugural trip from Indiana to California, making pit stops along the way to refuel at Chevron stations.

Last year, Walmart announced several first-of-their-kind initiatives among its Class 8 transportation fleet as the retailer pursues its goal to achieve zero emissions across global operations by 2040. And just in time for Earth Week, the introduction of this CNG-powered truck is an important milestone in the retailer’s journey.

While trucking has historically relied on diesel to fuel its engines, a move toward renewable natural gas is an important step toward lowering fleet emissions. Renewable natural gas is produced when biomethane from decomposing organic matter – such as cow manure or landfill waste – is captured, treated and processed into natural gas. Methane that is not captured and processed is 25 times more potent than carbon dioxide (CO2) at trapping heat within the atmosphere leading to climate change.

“Working with partners like Walmart to test new products like the X15N gives Cummins valuable real-world data that helps us validate our engines prior to moving into full production,” said Puneet Jhawar, general manager – Spark Ignited Products for Cummins. “Chevron has also been very helpful in our test; to help increase CNG fuel availability that will enable adoption of alternate technologies faster.”

RNG accounts for 69% of on-road natural gas vehicle fuel

Natural Gas Vehicles for America (NGVAmerica) and Coalition for Renewable Natural Gas (RNG Coalition) today announced that 69 percent of all on-road fuel used in natural gas vehicles in calendar year 2022 was renewable natural gas (RNG), surpassing the previous year’s record-breaking level.  

Captured above ground from organic material in agricultural, wastewater, landfill, or food waste, RNG can produce carbon-negative results when fueling on-road vehicles like short- and long-haul trucks, transit buses, and refuse and recycling collection vehicles. California Air Resources Board data confirms that the annual average carbon intensity (CI) value of California’s bio-CNG vehicle fuel portfolio in its Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS) program is carbon negative and below zero at -92.26 gCO2e/MJ.

RNG use as a transportation fuel grew 17 percent over 2021 volumes, up 218 percent from 2018 levels.  NGVAmerica and RNG Coalition report that in 2022 a total of 663 million gallons (GGE) of natural gas were used as motor fuel. Of that, 457 million gallons (GGE) were from renewable sources.

“RNG-fueled heavy-duty vehicles are a scalable, affordable, and carbon-free-today solution for freight and transit fleets of all sizes,” said Dan Gage, president of NGVAmerica. “And with the upcoming availability of a 15-liter engine option, commercial fleet applications with the biggest torque and horsepower needs will also be able to transition to ultra-clean renewable natural gas motor fuel and displace diesel, saving on fueling costs and slashing their greenhouse gas emissions.”

“Renewable Natural Gas supply is growing,” said Johannes Escudero, founder and CEO of Coalition for Renewable Natural Gas. “With 281 RNG facilities transforming waste into fuel, and another 476 planned or under construction, we are increasingly able to affordably offer consumers the opportunity to decarbonize with RNG - the cleanest of any fuel available today.” 

RNG use as a motor fuel in 2022 displaced 5.63 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e). Put into perspective, RNG motor fuel use last year:

 •Lowered greenhouse gas emissions, equivalent to removing the GHG from almost 14 billion miles driven by the average passenger car;

•Eliminated CO2 emissions, equivalent to removing CO2 emissions from almost 633 million gallons of gasoline consumed; and 

•Sequestered carbon, equal to growing over 93 million tree seedlings for 10 years, or 6.66 million acres of U.S. forests for one year.

5 April 2023: Hexagon Agility, a business of Hexagon Composites, signed a multi-year agreement to supply Mobile Pipeline® X-STORE® modules to Manaseer Oil and Gas, a business of the Manaseer Group and the owner/operator of a leading chain of fuel stations in Jordan. The X-STORE modules will transport clean and cost effective compressed natural gas (CNG) to industrial customers lacking pipeline access, who are motivated to lower their carbon footprint.    

This order represents an estimated value of EUR 10 million (approx. NOK 113 million).

Norwegian Hydrogen closes deal with billion NOK potential

Growth company Norwegian Hydrogen has partnered with German cleantech company Quantron AG to become a strategic partner in Quantron´s Clean Transportation Alliance and support the unique Quantron-as-a-Service offering for customers in the transport and logistics industry. Norwegian Hydrogen is a preferred partner for Quantron throughout the Nordic region and in Norway, the collaboration is even closer.

Since the Quantron-as-a-Service concept works in such a way that Quantron’s customers will only fuel their trucks with hydrogen from Quantron’s preferred hydrogen suppliers, this is a substantial contract for green hydrogen producer Norwegian Hydrogen and their refueling company Vireon.

- Norwegian Hydrogen is now working to establish hydrogen refueling stations in key areas of the Nordic region. This is being done through its newly established subsidiary Vireon. New standard

The first step

There is a strong interest and demand for Fuel Cell powered heavy-duty / long-haul trucks in the Nordics and in the rest of Europe. Vireon estimates that there will be more than 1,500 hydrogen-powered trucks in the Nordic countries before 2027. Those vehicles will require an extensive network of refueling stations and the delivery of more than 20,000 tons of hydrogen per year. From there on, the number of trucks will grow rapidly.

Major CO2 savings

It is estimated that 1500 hydrogen trucks on Nordic roads will save up to 250,000 tons of CO2 per year compared to diesel vehicles. This is more than the annual CO2 consumption of all inhabitants in a fairly large Norwegian city.

Nebraska governor tours Lincoln plant that makes tanks for natural gas

Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen got an up-close look Monday at Hexagon Agility, a growing company that makes composite tanks for alternative fuels.

Pillen met executives of the company and toured its Lincoln facility at the Lincoln Airport’s industrial park.

Hexagon Agility traces its roots to 1963, when it got its start as Lincoln Composites by what was then Brunswick Corp.

In 2005, General Dynamics, which had bought Brunswick, sold Lincoln Composites to Norwegian company Hexagon Composites, and the Lincoln operation a few years later became the first tenant of the airport’s first rail center building.

Now the company occupies five buildings at the industrial park and is in the midst of a $25 million expansion that could see it add up to 100 new employees to its workforce of more than 350 in Lincoln over the next 18 months.

“It’s a pretty exciting time for us,” said Andy Griffiths, interim president and chief financial officer of Hexagon Agility, which is based in Costa Mesa, California.

Lincoln Airport Executive Director David Haring said that when Hexagon first moved into the industrial park, it helped kick off a period of a half-dozen years of substantial development in the area and it’s good to see the company continue to grow.

“We have been thrilled to see the ongoing growth and expansion of Hexagon Agility recently and look forward to having them as a valuable tenant of the airport for years to come.”

The company, which makes carbon-fiber tanks for storing and transporting compressed natural gas, is one of two main divisions of Hexagon Composites — the other is Hexagon Purus, which makes similar tanks for hydrogen.

Griffiths said Hexagon Agility, which is what the company refers to as its “near-zero” emissions business, provides about 70% of the roughly $500 million in revenue Hexagon Composites does annually.

He cited high growth potential thanks to price advantages with natural gas, the growth of renewable natural gas such as methane, and more and more companies adopting corporate sustainability goals that require them to reduce emissions.

Hexagon Agility produces more than 35,000 carbon-fiber tanks annually in Lincoln and counts large companies such as UPS and Waste Management among its customers.

It also provides its tanks to truck and bus makers, some of which are used by local government agencies such as Lincoln Transportation & Utilities and Metropolitan Utilities District in Omaha.

The company also makes more than 200 truck modules in Lincoln that contain larger tanks and are used as either mobile pipelines to transport gas or as mobile fueling stations.

Griffiths said the use of its products reduced global carbon dioxide emissions by 1.35 million metric tons in 2022, the equivalent of removing about 280,000 automobiles from the road.

Pillen said he was inspired by the “innovation and entrepreneurship” he saw at Hexagon.

RNG framed as ‘low risk’ option to slash truck emissions

The journey to zero emissions has begun, but a global fuel system producer believes that several energy sources — including renewable natural gas (RNG) — will be needed to reach the goal.

“There is not one solution that can replace diesel,” Hexagon Composites CEO Jon Erik Engeset said in a March 23 press conference. “We firmly believe there’s got to be a mix, depending on the geography, depending on availability, depending on the application of the trucks.”

The need for such options becomes increasingly important against a backdrop of ever-tighter emissions standards and the limited ranges of emerging battery-electric options. Ninety-seven percent of heavy trucks continue to be powered by diesel, and in Europe the share even increased by half a percentage point from 2021 to 2022.

“It is possible to decarbonize the land transportation sector by 2050 if you apply the right mix of technologies and energy alternatives,” Engeset said.

Benefits from wells to wheels

RNG, for example, can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 80-200% on a well-to-wheel basis, considering how the fuel is produced, and be delivered using traditional natural gas pipelines. Today, 64% of the natural gas used for U.S. transportation is renewable. In California, the share is 98%.

“California fleets that fueled with bio CNG [compressed natural gas] in 2021, they achieved carbon negativity for the second full year in a row with an annual average [carbon intensity] score of -44.41 – that’s lower than any other fuel and the only carbon-negative outcome mix in the entire [Low Carbon Fuel Standard] program,” said Dan Gage, president of NGV America.

Then there are the tax incentives for RNG. The U.S. Inflation Reduction Act extended an alternative fuel tax credit of 50 cents per US gallon to January 2024, said Ashley Remillard, senior vice-president – legal and government affairs. The technology-neutral Clean Fuels Production Credit of $1 per gallon comes in 2025-27, and a new Investment Tax Credit supports digesters to make the fuel. (All figures in US dollars.)

Diesel faces a tougher battle. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Trucks Plan is slashing NOx limits to 0.035 grams per horsepower-hour in 2027, which will drive up the cost of diesel equipment, Remillard added.

“The EPA restriction on NOx is going to force fleets either to continue to use very expensive diesel or pivot to CNG,” said Eric Bippus, Hexagon Agility’s senior vice president – global sales and marketing. “They’re running out of daylight.”

Dette legger vel ikke akkurat noen demper på vekstpotensialet til løsninger for lagring og transport av energi og energibærere som er alternativer til diesel og kull (se trådstart for mer), forretningsområder hvor altså Hexagon Groups teknologi og produkter er globalt markedsledende...

Her en produktnyhet, men først for ordens skyld til den som ikke er 'lommekjent' når det gjelder Hexagon Group: Hexagon Agility er Hexagon Composites's største divisjon og står for rundt 80% av selskapets omsetning.

Scania presents solution that expands the autonomy of gas trucks to up to 900 km

Present in the 2023 edition of Expoagro, the largest agribusiness fair in Argentina, the Scania revealed to the local market a new solution that promises to double the autonomy of heavy trucks powered by Natural Veil Gas ( GNV ) and/or Biomethane, there, called the Green Efficiency line.

Result of an important partnership with Hexagon Agility, a reference company in the development of fuel systems for commercial vehicles, the solution presented to the Argentine market consists of an extra set of four tanks, positioned behind the cabin and with a total storage capacity of 200 m ³. 

"We continue to expand our portfolio of solutions, which allows us to follow the various productive sectors in the country”, said Oscar Jaern, CEO of Scania Argentina. “The new solution for GNV vehicles is another step towards sustainable mobility and motivates us to continue promoting this change, offering services and units of excellence to our customers”.

Weighing about 800 kilos, the new solution of extra GNV/Biomethane tanks can be incorporated both in new trucks and in trucks previously sold, through retrofit. According to the automaker of Swedish origin, in the case of 6x2 trucks, autonomy can reach up to 790 kilometers with the new solution. In the case of 4x2 specimens, autonomy can jump up to 900 kilometers without the need for refueling.

Initially, the new solution will be available for purchase only on Scania dealer networks in Argentina.

Det blir som jeg skrev for et par år siden: Purus er diamanten i Hexagon systemet og som vil bringe Hex Composite til de virkelige store høyder. Blir spennende å se hvordan dette utvikler seg i løpet av et par år.
Ser også sjefen av EU er på tur i Nordsjøen i dag sammen med Støre og Stoltenberg, hvor det diskuteres en god del om grønn energi. Så får den som til stadighet holder på å rakke ned på ledelsen, hvor udugelig de er, bare holde på med sitt.

Ja, det er helt fullstendig ufattelig at det ikke får mer oppmerksomhet i norsk media! Er det bare negativt de vil skrive om?

Ja, ting tegner utrolig bra nå, vil jeg påstå, og det akselererer stadig fortere i svingene. Og mye er det stor skala over. Kontrakten verdt 20 milliarder NOK++ med HINO trucks får jo knapt oppmerksomhet i norsk offentlighet, men selv er jeg ikke større på det enn at jeg synes det er helt utrolig stort at Hexagon Purus ved hjelp av sin egen proprietære teknologi skal produsere 10 000 helelektriske tungtransportkjøretøy av den aller tyngste kategorien, for Toyota! Så stort at man nesten må klype seg i armen mens man lurer på hva som blir det neste.

Hexagon Purus er som tidligere nevnt en av hovedeierne i Norwegian Hydrogen, sammen med bl.a. Mitsui. Så ja, Mitsui er med her også...

Og sett fra perspektivet til en Hexagon Purus aksjonær, er det vanskelig å skjønne annet enn at det kan bli mye å gjøre også for Hexagon Purus i forbindelse med alle 'ballene' Norwegian Hydrogen allerede har i luften og de nye som kommer. Tenker her seff på behovet for lagring og transport av hydrogen. ALLTID behov for lagring av H2, og Hexagon Purus er jo globalt markedskedende på dette som de også er når det gjelder transport av hydrogenet.

Og i Norwegian Hydrogen skjer det virkelig store ting om dagen. Det jeg har gravd frem tidligere er postet på denne tråden tidligere, og i dag fikk vi igjen nyheter av det svært så spennende slaget, må man kunne tilate seg å si når det gjelder dette. Og partnerne røper at de har mer på gang. Mye mer...


Norwegian Hydrogen inn i dansk samarbeid

Norwegian Hydrogen går sammen med en danske seriegründer for å produsere grønt hydrogen. Sluttproduktet skal være flytende biogass til nordeuropeiske kunder.

Den danske serigründeren Jens Peter Lunden eier både vindparker og biogassanlegg. I rundt to år har han vært på jakt etter en hydrogenpartner, og nå har valget falt på Norwegian Hydrogen. 

– Vi etablerere et 50/50 joint venture som heter Grøn Brint. Hydrogen heter brint på dansk, sier adm. direktør Jens Berge i Norwegian Hydrogen.

– Vi skal produsere hydrogen i dette felleseide selskapet, og det skal primært brukes til produsere flytende biogass som skal selges videre til det nordeuropeiske markedet. Vi er ikke med i prosessen med å produseres flytende biogass. Vi skal bare produsere hydrogenet, fortsetter han.

Elektrolysørene som kreves for å produsere det grønne hydrogenet skal leveres av det tyske selskapet H-Tec Systems.

Har flere prosjekter

I første omgang skal det installeres et produksjonsanlegg til 50 millioner kroner i Hjørring, langt nord på Jylland. Kraften som trengs til hydrogenproduksjonen skal komme fra vindkraft. Deretter er meningen å skalere opp produksjonen to til fire ganger på dette stedet.

Det betyr at de samlede investeringene blir på mellom 100 og 200 millioner kroner, der Norwegian Hydrogen skal stå for halvparten.

– Når dette er gjort har vi planer om å gjøre tilsvarende prosjekter andre steder, og da først og fremst i Danmark. Men er mulig at vi etter hvert vil gjøre tilsvarende prosjekter også i Norge og andre deler av Norden, sier Berge. 

– Noen av de andre prosjektene vi ser på har et større potensial enn dette første, fortsetter han.

Norwegian Hydrogen inngår banebrytende samarbeid om flytende biogass

Norwegian Hydrogen, energientreprenør Jens Peter Lunden og danske GrønGas inngår banebrytende samarbeid om vindkraft, elektrolyse og flytende biogass. H-TEC SYSTEMS leverer PEM-electrolyse teknologi til det nye samarbeidet.

– Norwegian Hydrogen ønsker å være en pioner innen bruk av grønt hydrogen til ulike formål. Dette samarbeidet viser at vi på en ny og innovativ måte, ved å utnytte grønt hydrogen og grønn CO2, kan produsere flytende biogass som markedet etterspør, sier Jens Berge, CEO i Norwegian Hydrogen.

Samarbeidet er basert på en innovativ teknologi utviklet av GrønGas, der grønt hydrogen benyttes direkte i produksjonen av flytende biogass.

Produksjonsstart allerede i 2023

Norwegian Hydrogen og Jens Peter Lunden har etablert et 50/50 joint venture under navnet Grøn Brint ApS. Selskapet skal eie og drive elektrolyseanlegg for produksjon av grønt hydrogen, primært til bruk inn mot produksjon av flytende biogass.

Grøn Brint Aps har allerede bestilt elektrolysører for første fase av samarbeidet fra det tyske selskapet H-TEC, og planlegger å produsere hydrogenet allerede inneværende år. Deretter er planen å skalere opp produksjonen basert på den grønne energien som er tilgjengelig fra Lundens vindturbiner.

– Grøn Brint ApS joint venture er en innovativ tilnærming til bruk av hydrogen, som vi er glade for å bidra til med våre modulære elektrolysører, sier Robin v. Plettenberg, administrerende direktør i H-TEC SYSTEMS.

– Samarbeidet med Jens Peter Lunden og GrønGas er en viktig milepæl for Norwegian Hydrogen og resultatet av god og konstruktiv dialog over lang tid, uttaler Berge.

Grønn og lønnsom verdikjede

Ved å benytte grønt hydrogen direkte i produksjonen av biogass, utnyttes også grønn CO2 som blir til overs i prosessen. Denne CO2 reduksjonen gir CO2 kvoter, som gir merverdi for partene og danner grunnlaget for lønnsomheten i prosjektet.

– Partene har jobbet tett sammen for å utvikle en kommersiell modell for samarbeidet som gir lønnsomhet for hver av virksomhetene. Sammen skal vi demonstrere en integrert, grønn og lønnsom verdikjede fra vindmøller via elektrolyse til flytende biogass til kunder i Tyskland, avslutter Lunden.

– I GrønGas gleder vi oss til å få «Grøn Brint» rett ved siden av oss. I nær fremtid håper vi å kunne bruke hydrogen til CCU og metanisering direkte på biogassanlegget. Vi har som mål å være en del av og til og med legge til den samme verdikjeden som Grøn Brint er en del av, sier Allan Olesen, administrerende direktør i GrønGas.

Partene har ambisjoner om å utvide samarbeidet til å omfatte andre muligheter innen produksjon av hydrogen og andre e-fuels, basert på vindkraft. De har flere store prosjekter under planlegging.

Hydrogenet som produseres må jo lagres og eventuelt transporteres så her går altså tankene i retning Hexagon Purus. Og i kulissene her aner man nærvær av en annen aktør som helt sikkert vil sette stor pris på denne produksjonen av grønn, flytende biogass - Hexagon Composites. Hexagon Composites har kjøpt 40% av Cryoshelter og har opsjon på å kjøpe resten. Allerede i fjor vår fikk vi vite at "Cryoshelter’s technology is already at a pre-commercial stage" når det gjelder flytende naturgass, og siden da har det nå gått nesten et år.

There is an established market for liquid natural gas mobility solutions and Cryoshelter’s technology is already at a pre-commercial stage, while the market and products for liquid hydrogen storage are in the early stage of development with longer timeframe to commercialization. Sea Change ferry arrives in San Francisco

The highly anticipated zero-emissions ferry, the M/V Sea Change, powered by hydrogen fuel cell technology arrived in San Francisco over the weekend, where it will prepare to carry passengers later this year.

Launched in August 2021 at Bellingham, Wash.-based All American Marine, the Sea Change is a 70-foot catamaran ferry designed by Incat Crowther, equipped with a hydrogen fuel cell system from Zero Emissions Industries (ZEI), which includes 360 kW of fuel cells from Cummins and 242 kg of hydrogen storage tanks from Hexagon Purus, and a 600 kW electric propulsion system from BAE Systems that includes 100 kWh of lithium-ion battery storage from XALT. The Hornblower Group led the construction management.

The ferry will be operated by San Francisco Bay Ferry, which operates 16 vessels to California cities including Oakland, Richmond and Vallejo. The operator is working with U.S. Coast Guard officials in the Bay Area on necessary inspections and certifications needed to operate the vessel.

“We’re finalizing plans on a demonstration pilot operating M/V Sea Change, the world’s first hydrogen electric passenger ferry, in the Bay Area,” says Thomas Hall, spokesperson for San Francisco Bay Ferry. “San Francisco Bay Ferry boasts the cleanest high-speed, high-capacity ferry fleet in the nation, but we’re committed to moving toward a zero-emission future. We plan to deliver our first zero-emission battery electric ferries in the next couple of years, and we’re so excited to learn more about the potential for hydrogen fuel cells through this demonstration pilot. We look forward to announcing more, including a date when the public can ride on this state-of-the-art ferry, in the coming months.”

Ferry specifics

The 75-passenger ferry received gaseous hydrogen into its 242 kg tanks on the upper deck. It uses that hydrogen in fuel cells producing electricity to power electric motors for distances up to 300 nautical miles, and speeds up to 20 knots—similar capabilities to diesel-powered vessels—with the added benefits of zero exhaust smoke or other emissions and very little vibration and noise.

The Sea Change project is managed and financed by SWITCH Maritime, an impact investment firm building the first fleet of exclusively zero-carbon maritime vessels for adoption by existing ship owners and operators.

Sea Change was the first vessel in the larger zero-carbon ferry fleet that SWITCH planned to construct in 2022, in partnership with municipalities and shipowners aiming to transition to carbon-free vessels. In making the transition, they were able to leverage government grant funds related to transportation decarbonization activities targeted by the landmark U.S. infrastructure bill
