Bigger invisible sensor ♥️🚀

biometric sensor - which takes the form of a square - for authentication. In future, this square could disappear to make the sensor invisible. The sensor might also be bigger. You could potentially place your finger anywhere on the card to be authenticated.

Key Takeaways

This is the fifth and final episode in our series in which you have learned about the history of biometric payment, what is a biometric card, why it could easily be used as an identity document and how authentication works. Now it's time to focus on what the future of biometric payments hold.

Here are the key takeaways from this final episode:
- what is the future of biometric cards,
- what they could be used for and...
- ...possibilities for biometric payments beyond cards.

"For the years to come, we might use biometric cards not only to pay, but also to access DeFi (Decentralized Finance) apps, securely enter buildings, and commute in public transport"

The biometric cards of tomorrow

We are currently in the second generation of biometric cards. But what might the third and subsequent generations look like?

- Design. The biometric card is more secure and more hygienic than a traditional payment card. In line with our key sustainability pillars, we are considering the possibility of developing a next version of this biometric card made from environmentally-friendly raw materials.
- Proof of life! The card chip is too small to have a large computing capacity. Therefore, it is not possible at present to prove that the finger used for authentication is actually ... attached to a hand (even though a severed finger would not be useful for long!) The biometric card of tomorrow may actually be able to detect life through vein pulses, for example.
- Sensor. With second generation biometric cards, the cardholder needs to put their fingertip on the biometric sensor - which takes the form of a square - for authentication. In future, this square could disappear to make the sensor invisible. The sensor might also be bigger. You could potentially place your finger anywhere on the card to be authenticated.
- Fingertips. At present, you can register one or two different fingers - this is up to the bank. In the future, you may be able to register even more fingers.

These are just a few of the innovations that could streamline the use of biometric cards even further.

New potential uses

Now we know what biometric cards could look like, let's see what they could be used for.

- Cryptocurrencies. The second generation can already be used to digitally sign cryptocurrencies. Tomorrow, they may also be used for in-store payments with crypto if the new POS terminals allow these ... and stores accept them.
- Digital payment. Today, paying for a purchase on the internet with your bankcard can be tedious. You must enter all of the information of your card and you can't simply tap to pay. But this might be possible in the future. You may be able to pay by moving your biometric card near your phone and validating the transaction by placing your finger on your card sensor.
This is the potential of how biometric cards can serve as ID cards, in addition to those discussed in previous episodes.

Biometric payments - beyond the card

For now, it is widely used in the banking sector for payment cards or opening accounts remotely. The bank asks you to take a picture of your ID and of your face to compare the two photos to make sure they match.

In theory however, other types of use exist: money transfers, taking out insurance policies, electronic signatures, etc. - every sensitive operation could benefit from the high level of security offered by biometrics.

When it comes to biometric payments, this is what tomorrow may look like:

1. consumers digitally sign - and give their consent to - a payment system that links their identity to their bank account using biometrics (i.e. face, iris or fingerprints);
2. when entering a store, users are authenticated via a biometric sensor;
3. in-store, certain discounts are offered to specific customers based on their preferences;
4. customers may leave the store with their purchases and the cost is debited directly from their account.
In this use case, biometrics serves for access control and a way to identify a person to link them to their payment method. Thus, the same kind of system can be applied to building or home access control, to pay for public transport, and for all sorts of use cases - making life easier for everyone, especially for visually impaired people.

The only limit to these disruptive user experiences is the business model (who actually keeps the data? where is it stored? how is it integrated into the payment process?) and the readiness of the population to accept these new technologies. This readiness appears to be gaining traction according to our F.CODE Survey conducted in 2021 on 3,422 people from 14

countries:

- 90% of respondents were prepared to use biometric technology;
- 84% had already tried it;
- 86% found it secure;
- 81% were willing to pay in-store with their fingerprint instead of a PIN.

Biometric cards harness all the benefits of biometrics (security, ease of use) and use an already well-established model and existing channels. This state-of-the-art technology is now accessible to everyone and we are only just beginning to explore its potential.

Idemia simplifies operations, creates biometrics, digital id, payments divisions in reorg

Idemia simplifies operations, creates biometrics, digital id, payments divisions in reorg
Biometrics and digital ID titan Idemia has divided into three divisions, in a major reorganization that sees smart identity, biometrics for public security and secure payments each given additional runway for growth as distinct entities.
According to a release, the three divisions, “each operating as leaders in their specific market segment,” are intended to enable agility and provide customer services that are more tailored to specific client needs, in the interest of unlocking value in parallel revenue streams.

Each division has its own leader. Idemia Secure Transactions (IST), which has a global workforce of approximately 10,000 employees across more than 50 countries, will have Philippe Oliva at the helm. Matthew Cole, previously executive vice president of Idemia’s public security and identity business unit, will lead Idemia Public Security (IPS), overseeing more than 3,800 employees. For Idemia Smart Identity (ISI), the firm has tapped its former VP of European operations for the public security and ID business unit, Antoine Grenier, who will oversee a team of 1,880 employees across 40 countries.
“Empowering nations with secured identities is not just our mission; it’s essential in a rapidly evolving digital world,” says Grenier. “At Idemia Smart Identity, we enable our customers to provide a secure legal identity, through biometrics and cryptography.” His division provides end-to-end systems for civil ID, physical IDs, and digital identity credentials.
Matthew Cole says his IPS team is committed to shaping a future in which biometric technology is used for good in the fields of public security and identity, travel and transportation, and access control. Its offerings span the biometric spectrum from iris to fingerprint and facial recognition, and include the TSA’s Credential Authentication Technology (CAT2) machines. “Our combination of innovative technologies and a privacy-first approach enables us to deliver the best solutions for governments and corporate organizations looking to seamlessly and securely manage access, travel, and the flow of people,” says Cole.
Finally, IST will specialize in “ultra-secure products, including advanced payment solutions, mobile payment services, 5G and Quantum-Safe 5G technology, cloud-based digital connectivity, and eco-friendly processes.”
The major restructuring comes after controlling firm Advent put the company up for sale last year with a price tag of 6 billion euros (around US$6.47 billion).

Bulls eye for Idex.
