« The Ministry of Mines and Energy says the country's Kudu gas reserves are expected to increase to 10 trillion cubic feet (TCF) from the current estimated 1.3 TCF.

The revised figure is due to the associated gas found within the Graff-1 well by Shell, Yonker, and TotalEnergies' enormous Venus-1 offshore discovery.

Petroleum Commissioner Maggy Shino said the discovery of light crude oil reserves has transformed the landscape of the Kudu gas field.

"We are seeing that we now have a possibility of us increasing this 1.3 TCF of natural gas to up to ten TCF of gas because of the associated gas that we are seeing within the graph, within the Yonker and within Venus," she said on Wednesday.

The revelation has the potential to reshape the energy landscape in Namibia and the wider Southern African Development Community (SADC) region. »

10 Tcf tilsvarer 1,9 milliarder boe.

https://www.upstreamonline.com/field-development/front-runner-emerges-in-battle-to-provide-fpso-for-totalenergies-huge-namibia-project/2-1-1765847

A lead contender has emerged to provide a floating production, storage and offloading vessel for TotalEnergies’ ultra-deepwater Venus development offshore Namibia.

Located in an impressive 3000 metres of water, Venus, according to Namibia's state oil company Namcor, holds some 2 billion barrels of recoverable oil, out of an in-place resource of 5.1 billion barrels.
In addition — which is a major development challenge for TotalEnergies — is how to handle the field's huge volumes of associated gas.

Namcor has previously said that, in total, some 8.7 trillion cubic feet of associated gas has been discovered by the French supermajor and Shell, which has made five discoveries in acreage immediately to the east.
Following a rash of discoveries in the Orange basin over the last three years, Venus is vying with Galp Energia’s proposed Mopane development in shallower water for the accolade of being the first Namibian oil and gas project to come on stream.
Upstream understands that Galp is eyeing a fast-track scheme for Mopane, initially focused on an FPSO, and is also entertaining the possibility of, in future, deploying a floating liquefied natural gas vessel to handle the big volumes of associated gas found on this asset.

In October, TotalEnergies outlined that the FPSO development is expected to be sanctioned in the first or second quarter of 2025, with the target of producing first oil by 2029.

Chief executive, Patrick Pouyanne, told analysts at the time that the FPSO would be expected to handle about 160,000 barrels per day of oil and 500 million cubic feet per day of gas.

It is likely to be the first of multiple FPSOs that the supermajor aims to deploy at Venus, given the scale of resources found to date.

Sources close to the FPSO bidding process told Upstream that South Korea's Hanwha Ocean has submitted competitive commercial and technical proposals for the FPSO and is currently tipped to land the prestigious contract.

Hanwha's proposals, added the sources, have positioned the company ahead of other industry rivals, including Dutch floating production specialist SBM Offshore.

Although the tender process is still active, Hanwha’s strong bid has been bolstered by the approval-in-principle of its standardised FPSO design by key classification societies such as the American Bureau of Shipping and Bureau Veritas, Upstream understands.

This design features a 340-metre-long, 62-metre-wide unit capable of handle 190,000 bpd of oil and able to store around 2.38 million barrels of crude.

Hanwha's standardised approach has been lauded for its potential to reduce both construction time and costs, an important consideration for TotalEnergies which wants to prevent the delays and cost-overruns that have hit so many offshore projects, said sources.

TotalEnergies has indicated that it would consider replicating the design of SBM Offshore’s FPSO it chose for its GranMorgu project in Suriname to maintain cost control.

However, the gas processing requirements for Venus present a major challenge.
Venus holds significant quantities of associated gas, although the exact volume has not been made public, it is known to be multiple trillions of cubic feet.

Engineers previously told Upstream that at least two gas reinjection wells would be needed — one acting as a back-up — although some gas could be used for onboard power generation.

One source familiar with the bid process, said the FPSO that SBM is supplying for GranMorgu was designed to meet the specific parameters — water depth, production rates and environmental conditions — of that field, but adapting the design to Venus might require significant modifications, which can be time-consuming and costly.

This meant that a “copy-and-paste” approach would not be feasible, because TotalEnergies would need to integrate gas reinjection systems to handle the associated gas, an expense the company is eager to manage effectively, according to sources.

Sources said that SBM's FPSO may lack the ability to handle potential wellstream contaminants — like carbon dioxide or hydrogen sulphide — so would not meet the specific requirements for Venus.

"TotalEnergies might need an FPSO capable of advanced gas treatment and higher gas processing rates," said one source familiar with the tender.

"An FPSO designed for Suriname might not have the appropriate configuration to handle these parameters, particularly if Venus requires advanced technologies for handling high gas-to-oil ratios or ultra-deepwater conditions," the source added.

Including topsides equipment on the FPSO to remove contaminants does not mean that H2S or CO2 have been found in Venus' well fluids.
A source close to the project explained it is good practice when developing a field — particularly those in remote, ultra-deepwater locations — to take a precautionary approach to contaminant processing.

If it is discovered after Venus has come on stream that its reservoirs do hold CO2, H2S or both, dealing with this issue retroactively would be costly, said another source, and would likely result in production being shut in until appropriate equipment could be installed on the FPSO, assuming there is space.
There are many examples of what can go wrong if reservoirs spring an unexpected contaminant surprise.

In 2012, for example, Vaalco Energy encountered high than expected concentrations of H2S on its Ebouri project in Gabon's shallow waters and was forced to shut in wells and redesign a gas sweetening system.
Six years earlier, Upstream broke the news that Nexen's big Buzzard project in the UK North Sea had been derailed — long after the final investment decision had been taken — because the operator found the reservoir held more H2S than previously thought.
This meant the field's oil could not be exported via the Forties Pipeline System without begin cleaned up beforehand, which forced Nexen to build another bridge-linked platform to support the new gas sweetening system, also known as an amine module.

This subsurface bolt from the blue saw Nexen spend $220 million at that time on a fourth platform, driving the total project cost up to more than $2.7 billion.

Issues surrounding Venus' associated gas have been a significant concern for TotalEnergies since its discovery in early 2022.

The company has made clear that one of the most critical aspects of the project is to develop a strategy that enables the reinjection of gas at a reasonable cost, rather than flaring it, which would violate environmental regulations.

Sources have previously highlighted the cost of reinjecting gas in some 3000 metres of water.

TotalEnergies’ chief executive, Patrick Pouyanne, noted that work currently under way focuses on optimising well placement and FPSO design to ensure the project stays within the company’s investment criteria, particularly the target of keeping development costs below $20 per barrel.

With the Venus FPSO project now at the forefront of TotalEnergies’ offshore strategy, Hanwha Ocean’s increasing influence in the FPSO market is notable.

The company has aggressively pursued FPSO projects in recent years, particularly following its acquisition of Singaporean FPSO modules specialist DynaMac Holdings.

The acquisition is expected to create synergies that enhance Hanwha’s ability to deliver cost-effective FPSO solutions by improving productivity, engineering capabilities and operational efficiency.

As part of its expanded capabilities, Hanwha Ocean has tasked DynaMac with building the modules for the Venus FPSO, with fabrication of the hull blocks potentially being handled at Hanwha Offshore Engineering’s facility in Shandong, China.

Formerly known as Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (Shandong), Hanwha's yard in China spans 1.2 million square metres and is equipped to handle large-scale offshore projects.

The Venus project has faced several challenges beyond the technical aspects of the FPSO design. The issue of associated gas and the absence of a commercial outlet for it has made gas reinjection the only viable solution.

The associated costs of this process are a concern for TotalEnergies, said sources, but the company remains committed to advancing the project while keeping it economically feasible.

Pouyanne has emphasised that optimising costs — especially in relation to subsea and drilling activities, which have seen rising costs — will be key to ensuring the project remains within the operator's investment framework.

In addition to technical and cost challenges, TotalEnergies has also considered the fiscal terms in Namibia.

Pouyanne suggested that if development costs for Venus prove too high, the company may engage in discussions with the Namibian authorities to improve such terms, similar to the approach the operator has taken for its Suriname project.

Since the initial discovery in 2022, TotalEnergies has been expanding its stake in the Venus field.

In January 2024, the company agreed to acquire an additional 10.5% interest in Block 2913B and a 9.39% interest in Block 2912, further solidifying its position in the Orange basin.

Upstream has reached out to TotalEnergies, Hanwha and SBM for comment regarding the Venus FPSO tender.

SBM declined to comment.

Nyheter i Pareto-presentasjonen jeg har fanget opp.

1. "Takeover of BW Adolo FPSO operations in 2025 set to further reduce cost".

2. Golfinho: " Production improved in late 2024 and into 2025".

3. Maromba: "Target production of 50,000 bbls/day".
" Financing close to completion".

4. Bourdon: "Drilling commenced in early 2025. Results expected during Q1."

Letebrønn her skal bores i q3 2025.

ReconAfrica Completes Strategic Farm Down With BW Energy
CALGARY, AB , Jan. 29, 2025 /CNW/ - Reconnaissance Energy Africa Ltd. (the "Company" or "ReconAfrica") (TSXV: RECO) (OTCQX: RECAF) ( Frankfurt : 0XD) (NSX: REC) announces that, further to its announcements on July 16, 2024 and July 30, 2024 , it has completed the farm down agreement with BW Energy Limited ("BW Energy")(OSE:BWE). The sale of a 20% working interest in Petroleum Exploration Licence 73 ("PEL 73"), in northeast Namibia , has been approved by the Namibian Ministry of Mines and Energy ("MME") and Namcor Exploration and Production (Pty) Ltd ("NAMCOR"). The working interests in PEL 73 are now:

ReconAfrica, operator, 70% working interest;
BW Energy 20% working interest; and
NAMCOR 10% working interest.
Brian Reinsborough , President and CEO commented: "We are pleased to have received all the necessary approvals for the completion of our strategic farm down agreement with BW Energy on PEL 73. We look forward to working with BW Energy as we continue to explore the Damara Fold Belt and Rift Basin plays.

"The results of the Naingopo exploration well will be released shortly following third party analysis of our extensive evaluation program, which was undertaken after the completion of drilling operations on the well. Results have been delayed due to transportation of side wall cores and fluid samples over the holiday period. All samples have now arrived with our third parties and are being analysed."

Carl K. Arnet , CEO, BW Energy commented : "The transaction will enable BW Energy to expand its footprint in a strategically important energy region and further our position as a leader in Namibia's journey towards energy independence. The data and insights gained through ReconAfrica's exploration campaign will further our understanding of the geology and petroleum system in Namibia .

Her er resten: In a statement issued late on Thursday morning UK time, ReconAfrica said the well encountered over “50 metres of net reservoir in the Otavi Group formation, derived from log analysis and indications of oil, which will be further confirmed from side wall cores”.

It highlighted the point that “indications of oil were observed from the Damara Fold Belt (play)”.

The company and its partners — Norway’s BW Energy and state-owned Namcor - now plan to accelerate drilling on another Damara Fold Belt target called Prospect I - which has now been de-risked - ahead of drilling the previously highlighted Kambundu prospect.
ReconAfrica chief executive Brian Reinsborough said the drilling results are “significant” and described the well a play opener that “demonstrates a working petroleum system” in the Damara Fold Belt.

He said the primary objective in the Otavi, above a main fault, was not penetrated due to seismic uncertainties but pointed out the Otavi was penetrated at the predicted depth below this main fault, and contained evidence of oil.

Reinsborough said multiple indications of oil were encountered in the Naingopo well: “We plan to continue to analyse all fluid and rock samples, which may take several months.”

“Based on our technical learnings from the Naingopo well results, we have further derisked Prospect I and plan to drill this prospect ahead of Kambundu”.

Chris Sembritzky , ReconAfrica's head of exploration, said: “Finding the presence of oil in the Otavi, as well as reservoir at these depths is critical for the opening of the Damara Fold Belt play,” adding that “we may return to Naingopo for further appraisal drilling to fully test the extent of the structure”.

After assessing vertical seismic profiling data from the well, he said the company feels “confident that any uncertainty with structure has been eliminated with respect to Prospect I”.

The Naingopo well reached a total depth of 4184 metres on 26 November and established the presence of Mulden and Otavi stratigraphy.
The well hit 52 metres of net reservoir in the Otavi Group, with the Mulden reservoirs being tighter than expected.

ReconAfrica said “the indication of oil, via rock fluorescence, was pervasive within the Otavi Group”, adding that “this interval of fluorescence was associated with oil being recovered at surface in the drilling mud system”.

Side wall cores, cuttings and fluid samples are currently with third-party service providers for analysis, while VSP processing is being finalised, along with the structural and stratigraphic interpretations from the formation image logs.

The company said it is also advancing permitting for a 3D seismic survey set to start in the second half of 2025 and which is expected to cover DFB and Rift Basin locations.

« Oil indications were observed in the Otavi Group, and further confirmation will be obtained through side wall core analysis, ReconAfrica said.

However, the primary Otavi objective above the main fault was not penetrated due to seismic uncertainties.

"We are excited about the results of this well, which opens the play and demonstrates a working petroleum system within the Damara Fold Belt," said Brian Reinsborough, ReconAfrica’s CEO.

Reinsborough highlighted the significance of finding over 50 metres of net reservoir with indications of oil.

“Multiple indications of oil were encountered in the Naingopo well and we plan to continue to analyse all fluid and rock samples, which may take several months,” the CEO added.»
