Drone shooting - top Idea in Defense
Russia war on Ukraine is a drone war. We were looking for a company that would effectively fight drones.
EOS is an international defence company from Australia that specialises in remote weapons systems. Last year, they launched the Slinger counter-drone system, which uses a 30mm NG cannon to shoot down dronesโฆ..cannon based air defence. It is a very accurate system, and the shot-per-kill cost is very low, much lower than rockets and missiles. Recently, they sold test quantities to the US and German governments. The Germans are deploying the systems in Ukraine to protect IRIS-T radar systems from small drones.
They have signed a 180 million dollar contract for anti-drone systems for Ukraine.

"The most recent ADM Top 40 Defence Contractors Survey, released in the December/January edition of ADM, also revealed Australia's twenty largest defence exporters by value. A number of these companies have seen significant jumps between 2022 and 2023, especially those with counter-UAS technologies."
"Yet it is Electro Optic Systems (EOS) who have been making many of Australia's defence export headlines. The company saw export revenue jump to 2023's $110 million figure from $93.61 million the year prior, and landed another opportunity in early 2024 with a $15 million contract to supply Slinger counter-drone systems to Diehl Defence in Germany."

Press release by EOS
EOS showcases advanced C-UAS capabilities at US Army Project Convergence Capstone 4
Huntsville, Alabama-based contractor EOS Defense Systems USA (EOS) participated in the US Army's Project Convergence Capstone 4 (PC-C4) during the period 15 to 20 March at the Army's National Training Center in Fort Irwin, California.
EOS demonstrated the capabilities of an R600 Remote Weapon Station equipped with a Northrop Grumman M230LF cannon, coaxial machine gun, and four Javelin missiles on an Army Small Multipurpose Equipment Transport (S-MET) robotic infantry support vehicle. EOS successfully shot down pairs of Class 1 UAVs at ranges of more than 300m and engaged multiple ground targets with 30mm cannon from this robotic platform. These capabilities paired with four of the premier anti-armor missiles in the world represents a significant increase in firepower available to light forces on a platform that is currently being fielded. The R600 provides both light- and medium-caliber firepower and the added lethality of multiple anti-tank or anti-air missiles, offering a major differentiating capability and addressing a critical need of US and allied forces.
Several experienced industry partners contributed to this success. The C-UAS exercise was conducted against Boresight Aerial Targetsโ low-cost UAVs which provided challenging and realistic target sets. The Javelin missile capability is being supported by the Javelin Joint Venture team.
The event was a critical venue for Army senior leaders to assess new technologies needed to ensure the Army's success in future conflicts as well as inform acquisition and force structure decisions. As human-machine integration continues to be a key strategic priority, the demonstration was an important opportunity to evaluate unmanned and remote solutions that provide essential protections to the warfighter. EOS' unique and ultra-precise RWS paired with a proven, multi-functional robotic vehicle is a viable and cost-effective solution that can address strategic Army priorities in the C-UAS domain and increased lethality for light forces.

"The UAE is just one example. We also intend to boost our US production capacity by producing in parallel the larger R600 and R800 systems in our Huntsville facility."
"But whatever we do, weโve always been first in class and benchmark in performance and strive for further improvement. For example, in the RWS business we are 30 to 40 per cent better in accuracy and range than our next competitors."
"Weโve invested more than $40 million into the High Energy Laser (HEL) business over the last 5 years. We own all the IPR and can make our own commercial decisions."

I just read the Canaccord Report on EOS. That is a very bullish report.
My favourite part:
2H24 appears catalyst rich - We understand EOS remains in late-stage negotiations for several material contracting opportunities, notably i) Land-400 phase 3 (CGeA$100m opportunity; delivery FY26-28), ii) Ukraine contract moving to unconditional (A$181m conditional contract, delivery FY25-26); and iii) 2x HighEnergy Laser product development agreements (CGe each representing A$30-60mcontract opportunity for delivery over 1-3 years).
I expect Cannacord will raise its price target very shortly.

The critical role of C-UAS in the Russia/Ukraine conflict
Fi Forrest | Army Technology
Russiaโs sudden invasion of Ukraine in 2022 triggered the rapid development of counter-drone technologies. How can military leaders address the issues of dealing with large numbers of cheaply built drones on the battlefield?
Following two and a half years of conflict, one of the major impacts of Russiaโs invasion of Ukraine has been the rising deployment of drones and the evolution of counter-drone technologies, underlining the crucial role of Counter-Unmanned Aerial Systems (C-UAS) in modern warfare.
The proliferation of drones on the battlefield is forcing military leaders to consider how to deal with this threat in the most effective and cost-effective way. With drones able to destroy expensive equipment and take lives, military leaders are exploring technologies that combine detection, tracking, and mitigation to stop the deadly influx. These technologies include passive techniques like jamming and cyberwarfare, and active techniques using traditional canon and missile-based approaches as well as high energy laser weapons, electro-magnetic pulse weapons, interceptors and nets to destroy drones.
As the drone landscape continues to evolve, defence contractors and strategic thinkers are increasingly investing in counter-drone technologies, leading to a rapid expansion of markets for both drones and C-UAS.
Demand is rising for UAVs
According to GlobalDataโs Defence Platform Acquisition database, the global military Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) market is projected to see robust growth in both value and volume over the next decade. In 2024, the market was valued at approximately 12 billion dollars with a total volume of 17 thousand units.
The effectiveness of lower-cost UAS has been demonstrated in the conflict in Ukraine, where Ukrainian forces have been observed utilising commercial off-the-shelf drones and low-cost unmanned technologies in military operations. Tactics have included the arming of cheap UAVs to deploy grenades and mortar rounds, raising concerns about the detection of such UAVs and creating an increased demand for C-UAS systems.
Another key driver of the UAV trend is their growing threat to vessels at sea. Currently, these vessels are using high-cost missiles to protect themselves and defeat drones, but following recent incidents in the Red Sea and Black Sea there is an increasing demand to protect them with low-cost counter-UAV solutions such as remotely controlled weapons stations and high energy laser systems.
As the global defence scene changes, the role of UAS and C-UAS will remain critical, but how nations employ cutting-edge UAS technology to defend against new threats will depend on their defence resources.
Counter-drone technologies
Ukraine is actively working to upgrade its defence capabilities and boost international collaboration, with the switch to direct contracts with arms manufacturers reducing its reliance on intermediaries.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine has stated that the country is interested in developing technologies for integrating weapon systems into land and maritime platforms to provide new solutions for countering threats.
To this end, technology manufactured by Canberra-based Australian defence company, Electro Optic Systems (EOS) has been sent to Ukraine as part of a US security assistance package. This includes the 30mm Slinger counter-drone weapon system, which contains radar, 30mm stabilised cannon with proximity-fuse, and high explosive ammunition designed for tracking and drone engagement at a range of more than 800 metres.
This innovative approach to counter-drone technology, combining advanced software, precise targeting, and versatile weapon options, sets it apart as a leading solution in the field.
The EOS Slinger weapon system features a state-of-the-art fire control system, advanced algorithms for target detection and tracking, and a fully stabilised four-axis gimbal for precise pointing on the move. A modular design allows for easy integration with existing platforms, rapid battle damage repair, and it can accommodate various weapon types, including machine guns, cannons, rockets and missiles.
EOS is also actively working with artificial intelligence (AI) companies to automate target identification. For example, the Slinger โ when integrated into a Battlespace Management System โ quickly gains the Recognised Air Picture from native sensors within the battlegroup. The company is also moving into wireless versions for deployment on uncrewed ground vehicles (UGVs), and is increasingly integrating with rockets and missiles, offering greater range and targeting capabilities.
Low-cost solutions for Ukraine
A huge advantage of the Slinger is its cost, priced at less than US $1 million (AUS $1.5 million) per system โ with a per engagement cost of around $100 to $1,000 depending on the type of ammunition. As Ukrainian cities are being attacked daily by drones and missiles, the system is providing a much-needed solution against moving targets, especially drones, and is quick and easy to learn to use.
On a visit last year to EOS, Ukraineโs ambassador to Australia, Vasyl Myroshnychenko, saw first-hand how Slinger can bring down drones for a fraction of the cost of missiles, while watching a test run.
โSometimes those missiles cost millions. And you hit the drones, which cost $2,000โฆitโs all about the cost,โ Mr Myroshnychenko said during the visit. The Ukrainian ambassador also emphasised the importance of the Slinger system in addressing the ongoing threat posed by drones and missiles.
In July this year, members of the Ukrainian defence leadership met with Australian defence industry representatives to expand international cooperation and military capabilities. Ukraineโs Deputy Minister of Defence, Dmytro Klimenkov, also met with EOS to discuss technology and potential collaboration opportunities. Klimenkov said: โUkraine continues to work actively to modernise its defence capabilities and expand international cooperationโฆyour assistance is crucial for us in these difficult times. We appreciate the solidarity and support provided by the Australian people.โ
