OSX +2,24%
SLB +1,7%
Brent +1,21%
EU gass +4,4%
US gass +6,3%
TechnipFMC PLC +2,84% (US peer)

Ropte i "AI-skogen" igjen.

What might be the tactics of larger players when constantly selling down a stock which delivers and guides well? Shorting does not seem to be a "tool" either? More like "sell on news".

When a stock delivers strong results and guidance but still experiences persistent selling pressure, larger players may employ various tactics beyond shorting. These tactics can be strategic or psychological and often hinge on influencing market sentiment or creating liquidity advantages. Here are potential explanations and strategies they might use:

1. "Sell on News" Phenomenon
Psychology of Expectations: Even when a company reports good results, if the market had higher expectations, large players may sell to capitalize on those unmet expectations. This can amplify a "sell on news" reaction.
Profit-Taking: After a strong pre-earnings rally, institutions may lock in profits regardless of positive news, leading to downward pressure.
2. Relentless Selling for Accumulation
Creating Weak Hands: Larger players may sell to drive the price lower, shaking out retail or smaller investors. This allows them to accumulate shares at a discount over time.
Liquidity Events: Selling during high-volume events (e.g., earnings) can disguise accumulation or create a false perception of declining demand.
3. Algorithmic and Technical Strategies
Exploiting Stop-Loss Orders: Large players might push the price below key technical levels, triggering stop-loss orders and further selling.
Low-Volume Price Manipulation: Selling during thin trading periods can amplify price drops, creating the illusion of weaker demand or negative sentiment.
4. Hedging Strategies
Delta Hedging: Institutions might sell stock as part of hedging positions in derivatives, such as options. This can create downward pressure even when the fundamentals are strong.
Sector Rotation: If funds are moving capital between sectors, they might sell outperforming stocks to rebalance portfolios, causing temporary selling pressure.
5. Media and Sentiment Management
Influencing Sentiment: Larger players might indirectly influence media narratives or analyst reports to align with their trading objectives. Negative headlines, even unwarranted, can dampen sentiment.
Anchoring with Large Orders: Placing large sell orders at key price levels can anchor market perceptions of resistance, deterring buyers.
6. Regulatory or Strategic Motives
Tax Optimization: Year-end selling may occur for tax-loss harvesting or portfolio restructuring, even in fundamentally strong stocks.
Strategic Competitor Moves: In cases of competitive interests, larger players might sell to influence a company’s valuation or market standing strategically.
Counteracting Strategies for Retail Investors
Focus on Fundamentals: If the company is delivering strong results and guidance, its intrinsic value may eventually be reflected in the stock price.
Understand Market Dynamics: Recognize that short-term price movements can be manipulated or influenced by large players and aren't always indicative of underlying value.
Diversify and Hold Long-Term: Long-term investing helps mitigate the impact of short-term volatility caused by tactical selling.
If persistent selling continues, monitoring insider transactions, short interest levels, and institutional ownership changes can provide clues about the underlying dynamics driving the price.

Jepp.

AKSO has decided to pay a strong extraordinary dividend today which also is last day inclusive rights. Mean TPs are still about 10% above current stock price even when dividend is payed out. Is buying at current price to get dividend a smart move?

Deciding whether to buy Aker Solutions (AKSO) stock today to receive the extraordinary dividend involves weighing the potential benefits of the dividend against the stock price adjustment expected after the ex-dividend date, as well as the broader investment context.

Key Considerations
Extraordinary Dividend Impact:
When a stock goes ex-dividend, its price typically drops by an amount approximately equal to the dividend payout. For AKSO, this adjustment is already expected and factored into analysts’ mean target prices (TPs), which remain ~10% above the current price even after the dividend is paid out. This suggests that AKSO's value proposition extends beyond the dividend.
Dividend Yield and Strategy:
If you buy the stock now and hold through the ex-dividend date, you secure the dividend payout. However, the expected drop in stock price after the dividend payment could offset this gain if the stock does not recover quickly.
Analyst Sentiment:
The mean target prices being above the adjusted stock price indicates bullish sentiment. Analysts likely believe the company's fundamentals and growth prospects justify a higher valuation, which could lead to price recovery post-dividend payout.
Tax Implications:
Consider the taxation on the dividend income in your jurisdiction. In some cases, dividend income may be taxed at a higher rate than capital gains.
Investment Horizon:
Short-term: If you're a short-term trader, the benefits hinge on the speed of price recovery post-dividend. Watch for market sentiment and volume on the ex-dividend date.
Long-term: For long-term investors, AKSO's fundamentals, mean TPs, and dividend policy could make this a worthwhile entry point, especially if the stock price remains attractive.
Is It a Smart Move?
Yes, if:
You believe the stock will recover quickly or continue to appreciate in value after the dividend adjustment.
You are comfortable with the potential near-term volatility.
Caution, if:
You are primarily driven by the dividend payout and are not confident in the company’s post-dividend price stability.
You have a short-term investment horizon and cannot tolerate potential losses from a delayed recovery.
Recommendation
If you're bullish on Aker Solutions’ long-term prospects, supported by analysts' target prices and the company’s strong fundamentals, this could be a good opportunity. However, it's prudent to assess liquidity needs, transaction costs, and potential alternatives in your portfolio.
