Avdukingen finner sted imorgen i Las Vegas på åpningsdagen av verdens største messe for tungtransport ACT Expo 2024

https://www.actexpo.com/

Hexagon Purus and Hino Trucks Introduce Tern: A Pioneering Electric Heavy-Duty Truck

May 20, 2024 01:00 ET| Source: Hexagon Purus ASA

Las Vegas, NV, May 20, 2024 – Today at the Advanced Clean Transportation (ACT) Expo, Hexagon Purus in partnership with Hino Trucks, proudly announces the launch of Tern, a dedicated zero-emission truck brand along with their inaugural vehicle model, the RC8, a groundbreaking battery electric Class 8 tractor tailored for the U.S. market. This innovative semi-tractor leverages Hexagon Purus' years of development of zero-emission drivetrains for heavy-duty trucks and represents a driver-preferred option for fleets that are electrifying practical routes.

A product of the new long-term agreement between Hexagon Purus and Hino Trucks, valued at up to approximately $2 billion, Tern is designed to deliver a seamless transition to electrification for the U.S. commercial vehicle sector. Manufactured in Hexagon Purus' new facility in Dallas, Texas, the Tern RC8 is scheduled for serial production in late 2024.

Built on Hino's proven XL Series 4x2 chassis and equipped with Hexagon Purus' cutting-edge zero-emission technology, Tern exemplifies innovation with its proprietary battery systems, auxiliary modules, and power modules. The vehicle leverages a U.S. assembled Hino chassis, an e-Axle from Dana for optimum efficiency, and battery cells supplied and manufactured by Panasonic Energy initially in Japan, before transitioning to De Soto, Kansas from 2026 onwards, ensuring reliability, American sourcing, and top-tier performance.

"Tern RC8 delivers the comfort, reliability and safety that drivers and fleets want, and it’s purpose-built to be a very practical truck for operators integrating zero-emission trucks into their fleets," said Morten Holum, CEO of Hexagon Purus. "We are excited to introduce a truck that embodies the endurance and efficiency of the Arctic Tern, renowned for its light weight and long migratory journey – a trusty companion you can always rely on."

Key features of the Tern RC8 include:

A 100% battery-electric platform with an industry-leading short wheelbase of 165 inches

A gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 68,000 lbs.  targeting applications of approximately 200 miles in regional city duty cycles, addressing 95 percent of use cases

Dual Hexagon Purus Gen3 269kWh battery packs in a 750-volt, 538 kWh configuration, providing substantial power and range for targeted duty cycles

Recharge rate of 241 kW

Peak/continuous horsepower of 680hp/494hp

Peak torque 38,350 ft/lbs.

Tern trucks will be available exclusively through the Tern dealer network and will leverage Hino’s network ensuring total support and service. This launch aligns with the Advanced Clean Fleets regulation in California and gives fleets an excellent option to decarbonize their supply chain, especially in target applications like metro-regional routes, food & beverage logistics and similar routes where the tight turning radius and popular 4x2 chassis offer practical benefits.

“Our partnership with Hexagon Purus introduces a highly reliable Class 8, 4x2 tractor option into the electric truck market, catering to a wide range of applications. We are excited to see Tern launched in California, where fleet electrification is imperative,” remarked Glenn Ellis, President of Hino Trucks.

The introduction of the Tern brand signifies a transformative step for both companies and the commercial trucking industry, driving towards a zero-emission future without compromising on power or performance.

What’s Winning the Commercial EV Power Wars? E-Axles or Central Drive Motors?

Story by Justin Banner, Manufacturer• 2w • 9 min read
...
However, one use case that caught our attention was a concept Class 8 semi from Hino Motors, the commercial vehicle manufacturer under the Toyota organization. It was done in partnership with Hexagon Purus to develop an electrified version of the XL 4x2 tractor cab chassis. The interesting part is just how short this Class 8 is while retaining a large 528-kWh battery pack—why? It uses an e-axle, rather than a central driver. In this configuration, this truck would get around 250 miles of range, more than enough for those last-mile fleets that can't or don't want to use a straight truck.

Anything that needs a trailer instead of a straight truck, like a drink distributor or grocery delivery or anything that needs a trailer but can't get into some tight corners, this concept is going to be a perfect application," said Sloan. Instead of using a Meritor e-axle, this Hino is using an Allison Transmission (yes, that Allison Transmission, Chevrolet Duramax fans) eGen Power 100D e-axle. It's a dual-motor e-axle with a two-speed gearbox with a maximum torque output of 34,665.42 lb-ft (most likely with gearing multiplication influence for this number and playing the same numbers game GMC did with the Hummer EV) and delivering a peak of 871.66 hp at 650 volts, but is capable of taking up to 900 volts.

"But again," continued Sloan, "you can see that by not having a central drive motor, we can actually shorten this wheelbase even more to make a stubby truck with a tight turnaround and turning radius for customers who need it like those in the city. If you have a central drive motor that is as powerful as this is, it's going to be quite big on its own and then you still need a driveshaft." Even if you mount it so that the central driver is rear mounted, you can't take advantage of it being a shorter wheelbase because now you have something sticking out the back." Of course, if you needed more range you could still use this axle and hydrogen fuel cells to go over 1,000 miles but at that point, you'll want a longer wheelbase so you can hotel in a sleeper cab truck instead of a day cab like this one.

Her får vi servert signifikante nyheter.

When Norweigen-owned Hexagon Purus announced its North American-made fully-electric transport trucks would soon be rolling off the line at their Dallas manufacturing facility, there was one thing they left out.

A key component of the vehicles, the battery packs, are made at the Kelowna plant, which is also home for the company's Executive Vice President, Todd Sloan.

Hexagon Purus secures up to CAD 8.5 million in funding from Canadian authorities to further develop its leading battery electric vehicle technology

Fri, Jul 12, 2024, 7:16 AM GMT+24 min read

Hexagon Purus has secured up to CAD 8.5 million from The Commercial Vehicle Innovation Challenge (CVIC) in British Columbia, Canada. The funds will support labor and capital expenditure to further develop its leading battery electric vehicle technology for the Tern RC8. The grant is launched under CleanBC Go Electric’s Advanced Research and Commercialization (ARC) program which aims to support growth in BC’s zero-emission vehicles industry and to create jobs.

The funding, subject to certain milestone criteria being met, will be used at Hexagon Purus’ facility in Kelowna for the Tern RC8, a groundbreaking battery electric Class 8 truck tailored for the North American market. The truck will be exclusively distributed by Hino Motors, and the distribution agreement foresees up to 10,000 trucks to be delivered by 2030. The project is expected to result in approximately 40 new positions in Kelowna.

“Hexagon Purus began operations in Canada in January 2020, and since then we have grown from 20 employees to approximately 100 over the past three years. We are delighted to have secured this funding which will support labor and material costs of our battery electric products and technologies in North America to accelerate zero-emission mobility.” says Todd Sloan, Executive Vice President of Battery Systems and Vehicle Integration, Hexagon Purus.

Driving Energy Transformation

To reach the 1.5°C ambition set by the Paris agreement back in 2015 the transportation sector is required to reduce emissions by 75% until 2050. In the U.S., both the Environmental Protection Act (EPA) and California Air Resources Board (CARB) have introduced proposals and regulations that addresses the need for further reductions in emissions in the transportation sector. In California, CARB has introduced a regulation for truck manufacturers (Advanced Clean Truck standard), and more recently, proposed a new regulation for fleet owners (Advanced Clean Fleet standard). Both regulations aim at reducing emissions and accelerate the adoption of zero-emissions vehicles (ZEVs) in the transportation sector in California. As part of both the Advanced Clean Truck (ACT) and the proposed Advanced Clean Fleet (ACF) regulations, the truck manufactures and fleet owners are required to have an incrementally higher ZEV content when selling or operating a fleet of trucks in California from 2024 onwards. The ACT regulation has already been adopted by five other states in the U.S. (Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, and Washington) and two more states are in the public process required to adopt (Colorado and Main).

The ACT requires amongst other that 5% of all new Class 7 and 8 trucks sold in 2024 in California must be ZEV while new additions to fleets of Class 7 and 8 trucks operating to and from intermodal seaports and railyards are required to be ZEV from 2024. The ACT regulation also requires 100% of truck manufacturers’ sales in 2040 to come from ZEVs, putting an effective end to sale of internal combustion engine trucks in California and incentivizes investments into infrastructure and supply chain.

There are approximately 1.8 million commercial trucks operating in California daily across a various set of classes including amongst other 219,000 Class 7 and 8 trucks. According to CARB, the combined effect from the ACT and ACF regulations will lead to approximately 0.5 million ZEVs on the road by 2035 in California, increasing to 1.6 million in 2050.

We are currently gearing up for serial production of our battery electric Tern RC8 truck at our Dallas facility, in partnership with Hino Trucks. 🚚🔧 Vehicle assembly and integration is, for now, taking place in Ontario. Looking ahead, the Ontario location will transition into a dedicated service unit, providing ongoing support as vehicle integration moves to Dallas. This strategic move will allow us to optimize our operations and continue delivering excellence in every vehicle we produce. In the past few weeks, new colleagues from our Dallas site had the opportunity to collaborate closely on some of our early truck builds in concert with our Ontario team. This on-the-job training has been crucial for sharing expertise and ensuring a seamless transition of our vehicle integration from Ontario to Dallas.
