The ‘Hibou’ air quality sensor system employs Nordic Semiconductor’s nRF52832 SoC to deliver wireless connectivity and manage complex sensor algorithms

Nordic Semiconductor today announces that Smart Sensor Devices, a Stockholm, Sweden-based Internet of Things (IoT) solutions start-up, has selected Nordic’s nRF52832 Bluetooth® Low Energy (Bluetooth LE) System-on-Chip (SoC) for its ‘Hibou’ air quality sensor system. The Nordic SoC’s powerful Arm® Cortex™ M4F processor provides ample computational power to run complex sensor algorithms, as well as deliver wireless connectivity between the unit and the user’s Bluetooth 4.0 (and later) smartphone or tablet.

The Hibou unit includes a range of sensors measuring particulate matter (PM), gas (VOC), humidity, temperature, atmospheric pressure, as well as ambient and ultraviolet (UV) light, and is designed to provide users with rapid feedback on air quality and the potential presence of pollution in commercial, government, or consumer settings.

In operation, the 80 by 50 by 30mm wall-mounted device monitors indoor and partly-outdoor air quality as well as environmental conditions, and using Bluetooth LE wireless connectivity provided by the Nordic SoC, syncs the data to the user’s smartphone or tablet, where it can be reviewed via the company’s Android-compatible ‘Air Quality System’ app. Alternatively the data can be transferred to the administrator’s Cloud-based management system via Wi-Fi. From the management system dashboard the user can not only review the data, set alerts and automate reports, but also connect the system to third party AI and machine learning platforms.
