"Italia dropper kullkraft

Regjeringen i Italia vil slutte med kullkraft innen 2025 og i stedet satse hardere på fornybar energi.

Statsminister Paolo Gentiloni presenterte fredag en plan å investere 175 milliarder euro i infrastruktur, fornybar energi og energieffektivisering. Summen tilsvarer over 1.600 milliarder kroner.

Innen 2025 skal kull ikke lenger brukes til strømproduksjon i Italia. I dag utgjør kullkraft 15 prosent av strømproduksjonen, ifølge Det internasjonale energibyrået (IEA). Mesteparten av strømforbruket dekkes med gasskraft og ulike typer fornybare energikilder.

Regjeringen understreker imidlertid at også regionale og lokale myndigheter må bidra hvis målet om å fase ut kullkraften skal nås.

Italias nye energistrategi innebærer også konkrete mål om kutt i klimautslippene. De skal reduseres med 39 prosent innen 2030, og med 63 prosent innen 2050.

Gentiloni la fram energiplanen i Roma samtidig som klimaforhandlere fra hele verden er samlet til en ny runde med klimaforhandlinger i Bonn i Tyskland."

Can The Middle East Make A Success Of Renewable Energy? It May Not Have A Choice

An hour away from the gleaming towers of Dubai, countless rows of solar panels face into the desert sun. From the rooftop of an administrative building at Mohammed Bin Rashid Solar Park, one can gaze across the field of blue-grey photovoltaic panels stretching to the horizon. This impressive sight is just the second part of an ambitious scheme to build one of the world’s largest solar energy plants, which will be able to generate 5GW of power by 2030.

The first two phases can provide up to 218MW of electricity. A third phase is underway and will add 800MW more once complete. In terms of the overall energy needs of the UAE, the electricity provided by the solar park is essentially negligible. But it is a clear sign of a growing trend to develop renewable energy schemes in the world’s oil-producing heartland, the Middle East.

Across the border in Saudi Arabia, the authorities recently awarded the contract for a 300MW renewable energy scheme, with the local Acwa Power securing the work with a world record low price of $0.023417 per kilowatt hour (kWh). The Saudi government is expected to issue tenders for a further 4GW of renewable energy this year. Across the region there are similar plans to develop renewable energy schemes in at least 11 other countries, from Morocco in the west to Iran in the east.

“In the oil producing heart of the Middle East we’re seeing investments in renewables at costs that are really game-changing,” says Adnan Amin, director general of the Abu Dhabi-based International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).

With all this activity, the region is following a growing global trend. Amin says that, since 2013, more than $1 trillion has been invested in renewable energy around the world and the sector has outpaced investment in fossil fuel generation for five years. “We are undergoing a rapid and systemic transformation of the world of energy,” he adds.

It can still feel slightly counter-intuitive for such investments to be made in a part of the world that is better known for oil and gas production. But it is not just energy ministries that have been converted to the cause. Companies better known for their oil and gas drilling are also increasingly involved, such as Petroleum Development Oman, which is building a number of solar and wind projects, and Algeria’s Sonelgaz, which is working through a 22GW renewable energy masterplan. Claudio Descalzi, CEO of Italian oil firm Eni, told a conference at Chatham House in London in late January that he sees renewables and gas as the fuels of the future. "I don't look at it as a threat. I view it as an opportunity. The future is gas and renewables,” he said.

Much of the Middle East is well placed to exploit the potential of solar energy in particular, given the clear blue skies and hot sun which dominate for much of the year. There is also a strong case for wind power in some other corners of the region, such as Morocco.

There are some climatic problems though. When the sun’s power does relent it is often because of sand storms, which can quickly envelop whole cities, as has recently been the case in the Saudi capital Riyadh and the Iranian city of Ahvaz. When that sand settles on solar panels it can reduce the amount of energy being produced by as much as 30%. A variety of solutions have been tested to clean the panels, including robots and drones, but the most effective approach is often the old-fashioned, lowest tech one available: people.

There is still also the issue of what to do when the sun sets. Battery technology is getting better, but still isn’t quite good enough to remove the need for conventional power sources to keep the lights and air conditioning units on at night.

Such problems will not be enough to derail the growing momentum in the industry through, as there are some important motivating factors which are pushing governments to exploit their renewable resources.

Perhaps the most significant is cost. Over the course of the past seven years, the price of solar and wind power generation has tumbled and renewable energy is now often cost-competitive with conventional energy sources such as gas-fired power plants. And although battery technology is not quite there yet, improvements in cost and efficiency are being made all the time in this area too.

At the same time, oil prices have been under pressure in recent years. And although they have generally been on the up since mid-2017, they still remain well below the level needed for most oil-producing governments in the region to balance their budgets. The authorities also know that if they can boost the share of renewable energy feeding their grids, it will free up more oil and gas which can be exported to international customers.

For local people and businesses, the opportunity to have a personal solar power plant can also be an alluring one – in some parts of the region rooftop solar panels are more reliable, cheaper and cleaner than diesel-powered generators or a grid connection. Yemen’s minister of electricity and energy Abdullah al-Akwaa recently told a conference in Abu Dhabi that some 400MW of power is produced from rooftop solar panels in his war-ravaged country.

But perhaps the greatest motivation is the fact that the momentum in favour of renewable energy is now all but impossible to resist. “We find ourselves at a time when investing in renewable energy has never made more sense,” Steve Sawyer, secretary general of the Global Wind Energy Council, told an IRENA Summit in Abu Dhabi in January. “As a matter of fact you could argue that it doesn’t make sense to invest in anything else.”

Not everyone will to agree with him on that point just yet, but the day may well come when it is inarguable. The great unknown is how quickly the world might arrive at such a point, but the oil-producing countries of the Middle East appear to have realised they are powerless to apply the brakes to the renewable energy revolution, so they might as well try and take advantage of what is happening.

“The question now is how to use the wealth from fossil fuels to realise the next energy transformation,” Maria van der Hoeven, executive director at the International Energy Agency (IEA), told the recent IRENA Summit. “There's not one answer to that. In my view those fossil fuel-producing states that have the money, they could take the lead. They have the financial resources and they have the sense of urgency, because at some time fossil fuel resources will be exhausted and they have to change their economic value-chain.”

More than 100 cities now mostly powered by renewable energy, data shows

The number of cities getting at least 70% of their total electricity supply from renewable energy has more than doubled since 2015.

The number of cities reporting they are predominantly powered by clean energy has more than doubled since 2015, as momentum builds for cities around the world to switch from fossil fuels to renewable sources.

Data published on Tuesday by the not-for-profit environmental impact researcher CDP found that 101 of the more than 570 cities on its books sourced at least 70% of their electricity from renewable sources in 2017, compared to 42 in 2015.

Nicolette Bartlett, CDP’s director of climate change, attributed the increase to both more cities reporting to CDP as well as a global shift towards renewable energy.

The data was a “comprehensive picture of what cities are doing with regards to renewable energy,” she told Guardian Cities.

That large urban centres as disparate as Auckland, Nairobi, Oslo and Brasília were successfully moving away from fossil fuels was held up as evidence of a changing tide by Kyra Appleby, CDP’s director of cities.

“Reassuringly, our data shows much commitment and ambition,” she said in a statement. “Cities not only want to shift to renewably energy, but, most importantly – they can.”

France awards 200 MW solar in drive to hit 10 GW target this year

France has awarded subsidized contracts to 392 rooftop solar PV projects with a combined capacity of 200 MW in the fourth round of a 2.5 GW program, the energy ministry said Thursday.

The average price dropped a further 5% from the previous round to Eur80.80/MWh ($99.89/MWh) with prices down 24% from the first round last April, it added.

Rooftop projects are generally smaller and therefore more expensive than ground-based projects which averaged just above Eur60/MWh in their latest auction.

In Germany, the average price for ground-based solar projects dropped below Eur50/MWh with rooftop projects compensated through higher feed-in-tariffs.

Gamblingsselskapet MGM Resorts vil være med å utvikle solpaneler for sine 13 eiendommer på «Las Vegas Strip», skriver CNBC.

Selskapet har gått sammen med Chicago-baserte Invenergy for å utvikle 100 megawatt med solceller.

Prosjektet, som har fått navnet «MGM-Invenergy Solar Project», vil være i drift ved slutten av 2020.

MGM Resorts vil kjøpe all energien produsert ved fasiliteten for å hjelpe å drive eiendommene.

Prosjektet vil bestå av 336.000 paneler på tvers av 640 mål med land og vil generere elektrisitet for å gi strøm til 27.000 hjem i ett år.

– Panelene vil bli en ny kilde til grønn energi som vil hjelpe å gi strøm til kasinoene.

EAM Solar (ticker EAM) driver solparker i Italia, et land i sterk frammarsj på solkraft. Selskapet har tatt rettslige skritt i en erstatningssak, og full erstatning fra motparten kan utgjøre flere hundre kroner per EAM-aksje. Det virker som at de har en god sak. Sjekk ut selv på nett. Bare forlik vil bli meget bra, men full erstatning kan bli himmelsk. Da er det snakk om en kursrakett av dimensjoner, og et solselskap med svært så kraftige muskler på plass.

Etter meningen min har EAM det aller største kurspotensilalet fram mot 2020 innen solindustrien her på børsen. Ja, faktisk troner de slik sett høyt over både REC og SSO. Ja, EAM er nå langt mer et erstatningscase enn et fundamentalt solkraftcase, men jeg nevner muligheten, for den er der.

Tech firms like Google, Amazon push power companies toward solar and wind, a blow to coal

SAN FRANCISCO — Every time you save a photo to the cloud, buy something on Amazon, open a Google doc or stream a movie, you’re probably pulling electricity from a windmill in Texas or a solar farm in Virginia.


Since 2008, renewable energy has gone from 9% to 18% of the U.S. energy mix, according to the Business Council for Sustainable Energy. A big part of that shift stems from tech companies' rapid buildout of cloud storage centers and a move to burnish their public image by vowing they’ll run these centers on sources like wind and solar.


Today Appalachian Power generates 61% of its electricity by burning coal and 5% from wind and solar. By 2031, Beam says he hopes to get that mix to 51% coal and 25% wind and solar.


There's also a trickle-down effect. Big tech companies are pushing their suppliers to go green. Apple, which said last month that 100% of the electricity it uses for its facilities and data centers comes from renewables, says nearly two dozen of its suppliers — such as manufacturers of batteries, keyboards and lenses — have also made a commitment to 100% renewable energy.


Walmart was one of the first Fortune 500 companies to make a commitment to going 100% renewable, in 2005, said Sam Kimmins at The Climate Group and head of RE100, which sets standards for companies making green energy commitments. Walmart recently said it gets 28% of its global electric needs from renewable energy and wants to hit 50% by 2025.

Last year Budweiser announced that it would be 100% powered by renewable energy by 2025. General Motors plans to get there by 2050.

It's become such a movement that last year, U.S. corporations bought more renewable power than utilities did, said Timothy Fox, vice president at ClearView Energy Partners, an energy consulting company.

Today, corporate America is happy to throw its weight around, said Bryn Baker, the World Wildlife Fund’s deputy director of renewable energy. “Companies are coming in and saying, ‘If you want us to be here, you have to give us access to clean energy.'”

Norske Solcelle-leasing-selskapet Otovo økte både inntektene og underskuddet i 2017, sammenlignet med året før.

Ifølge selskapets årsrapport hadde de inntekter på totalt 42 millioner kroner i året som gikk, mot 1,6 millioner i 2016.

Det ga et årsresultat på minus 13,3 millioner kroner, mot et underskudd på 9,8 millioner kroner året i forveien.

Den desidert største negative bidragsyteren i regnskapet er varekostnader, som kom inn på 41 millioner kroner, mot tidligere 1,2 millioner kroner.

Selskapet har imidlertid en samlet egenkapital på 58,3 millioner kroner. Otovo hentet i juli i fjor 60 millioner kroner i en investeringsrunde der Obos og Akershus Energi deltok.

Den samlede gjelden til selskapet var på 18,6 millioner kroner.

Investerer i vekst
– Vi la mye krefter i bygge en plattform som kan selge mye ny fornybar i fjor. Vi kommer til å fortsette å investere i vekst i år, skriver grunnlegger og daglig leder i Otovo, Andreas Thorsheim, i en SMS til E24.

Det er imidlertid mer som skjer i Statoil om dagen enn at man skal bytte navn og holde styr på den hektiske lete- og utbyggingsporteføljen. Under kvartalspresentasjonen poengterte Eldar Sætre at selskapet for første gang skal arrangere en egen kapitalmarkedsdag for bærekraft.

Vanligvis er det i februar at selskapet inviterer til kapitalmarkedsdag i London der man både presenter fjorårets resultater, diskuterer utbyttet og fremtidige planer. Men den 4. mai skal de altså ha et arrangement i lignende format dedikert til det grønne.

– Lager dere et eget arrangement fordi dere mener fornybarsatsingen kommer litt i skyggen av olje- og gassvirksomheten deres?

– Vi ser at det er stadig mer penger som legger tydelige bærekraftsprinsipper til grunn, enten det er snakk om fond eller andre typer investorer. Interessen er såpass stor for dette at vi velger å invitere til et eget arrangement om dette, sier Statoil-sjef Eldar Sætre til E24.

Oslo (TDN Direkt): First Solar planlegger å bygge en fabrikk for tilvirkning av moduler til solcellepaneler i Perrysburg, Ohio. Fabrikken på 1,2 gigawatt medfører en investering på 400 millioner dollar.

Det opplyser selskapet i en melding torsdag.

Byggearbeidet ventes å starte i midten av 2018, med full produksjon sent i 2019, og betinges av forhandlinger om incentivpakker fra lokale og føderale myndigheter.

-Sterk etterspørsel etter avansert amerikansk solcelleteknologi, kombinert med nylige endringer i amerikansk skattepolitikk for selskaper har støttet beslutningen vår om å øke First Solars produksjon i USA, sier sjef for global produksjon, Mike Koralewski i selskapet.

Solar Jobs Are Rising, Despite Trump's Tariffs

After all the dire warnings that Donald Trump’s solar tariffs would be a job killer, it’s possible that employment may tick up this year.

A solar trade group had warned that tens of thousands of jobs would be lost if Trump decided to impose tariffs on imported solar equipment, which he did in January. While 2018 is unlikely to be a banner year for the U.S. industry, solar proponents now say the number of new jobs could inch past a 2016 record. The reasons: The industry is still in growth mode, the tariffs weren’t as onerous as feared and developers hoarded panels. The tariffs will last only four years, will gradually decline in each of the last three and there are exceptions to them.

“We didn’t get the worst-case scenario,” said Ethan Zindler, a Washington-based analyst at Bloomberg New Energy Finance. “We got tariffs with various loopholes and funky ways around them.”

Minneapolis Becomes 65th U.S. City to Adopt 100% Renewables Goal

Minneapolis City Council and Mayor Jacob Frey announced Friday the city's pledge to achieve 100 percent renewable electricity for municipal facilities and operations by 2022 and citywide by 2030.

Minneapolis is now the largest city in the Midwest and the 65th city to join the nation's expanding clean energy movement, according to the Sierra Club's Ready For 100 Campaign.

For the first time in history, the production cost of renewables is lower than that of fossil fuels, an industry asset manager has claimed.

In a recent note to its clients, Hamburg, Germany-based Kaiserwetter Energy Asset Management, wrote that its “internal analysis” – based on data from Bloomberg, The Frankfurt School, Renewable Cost Database of the International Agency for Renewable Energy (IRENA) and UN Environment – puts fossil fuels generated energy costs in the range of $49 and $174 per MWh (Megawatt hours) in G20 energy markets in 2017.

Over a comparable period, renewable energy production came in between $35 and $54 per MWh. Breaking the data down further, Kaiserwetter said the international average cost for hydroelectric projects were more than $50 per MWh, wind power was $51 per MWh, and photovoltaic solar energy was $54 per MWh on average.

Dubai took another step toward completing what it says will be the largest solar park of its kind, inaugurating a 200-megawatt facility with partners Electricite de France SA and Abu Dhabi-based renewables company Masdar.

The third and latest phase of Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park will help Dubai toward its goal of generating about 10 percent of its electricity from renewables by 2020. The Gulf Arab city-state is already operating the first two phases of the project in the emirate’s desert and has broken ground on a fourth section.

Sea of solar panels turns Mexican desert green

From a distance, it looks like a deep-blue sea has formed in the middle of the Mexican desert.

But this is no mirage -- it's the largest solar park in Latin America.

With 2.3 million solar panels -- covering the equivalent of 2,200 football fields in the arid northern state of Coahuila -- the Villanueva power plant, built by Italian energy company Enel, is part of Mexico's push to generate 43 percent of its electricity from clean sources by 2024.

Arrayed across the sand in seemingly endless rows that stretch to the horizon, the solar panels are made to turn in tandem with the sun, like a giant field of shimmering metallic sunflowers.

The $650-million project came online in December and is due to produce 1,700 gigawatt hours when fully operational later this year -- enough to power 1.3 million homes.

Energy transition: Solar power, wind make up at least 94% of new U.S. generation in Q1 2018

Wind and solar dominated new electric capacity commissioned in the first three months of 2018 – even before you count behind-the-meter installations.

We at pv magazine USA have not been the biggest fans of the U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s (FERC) monthly Energy Infrastructure Update. There are multiple reasons why we feel the report falls short.

To start with, it does not include “behind-the-meter” distributed solar, and as such misses a significant portion of the U.S. market. And over the years its count of utility-scale solar has often fallen well below what is reported by GTM Research and Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) in their quarterly U.S. Solar Market Insight reports. This is true even when the use of AC figures by FERC and DC by GTM Research and SEIA are accounted for.

Our staff has also found months where the total installed utility-scale solar capacity estimated by FERC has been smaller than individual projects which we have observed coming online in a given month.

No data source is perfect, but we have gotten the impression that FERC and its contractors simply do not track U.S. solar installations in the kind of comprehensive way that private actors, such as GTM Research and SEIA, do.

That being said, we do trust FERC to track installations of conventional power plants, as they have been doing this for much longer. And if you look at the numbers in the organization’s Energy Infrastructure Update for March 2018, the trend is clear.

According to the document, in the first three months of the year, 16 wind farms totaling 1.79 GW-AC represented 53% of the new capacity coming online, and 92 solar projects with a combined capacity of 1.36 GW represented another 40%. With rounding, 94% of new utility-scale capacity installed was wind and solar.

Again, as this does not include distributed generation, it is safe to conclude that the actual portion is higher.

Ja grabein, jeg blir stadig forundret over at underrapportering og folks overraskelse over at PV-installasjoner er så store. Men ser man på utvikling av teknologien i fornybarbransjen, er jeg glad for at vi bare har sett starten. Bør kanskje være glad for dette. Når den etablert fossilindustrien først våkner, vil nok den stille opp med enda mer motstand.

Priser på PV-anlegg faller og faller. Det er ideelt for land med ikke helt utviklet EL-forsyning som ligger i solbeltet, men høyest relevant for land i mer tempererte strøk. Allerede nå er PV-energi konkurransedyktig i slike land, men tenk deg når energilagring får samme utvikling som PV-industrien! Det forskes og er funnet mange billige energilagringsalternativ rundt omkring i verden. Li-ion har kommet stort pga det passet med EL-bilens frammarsj. Men nå kommer det også billigere alternativer som ikke er like avhengig av begrensede ressurser som litium.

PV-ballen som har begynt å rulle, bare øker i omfang. PV-energi er ikke fordelaktig kun mtp gratis sol, men også ledningsnettet mellom regioner eller store krafttverk og forbruker bespares. I tillegg blir energiforsyningen i samfunnet langt mindre sårbar vha at ikke få store produserer EL, men dette er distribuert på mange flere små og lokale.

Og om man tror at PV-produksjon er den eneste kraftproduksjon somhar vært subsidiert, må man tro om igjen. Flere steder omkring i verden har annen kraftproduksjon og energi til forbruker vært subsidiert av myndighetene. Det er nå på tide å stoppe dette, og vri den satsingen over på fornybar energi.

PV has again been identified by the International Energy Agency (IEA) as the poster boy in the world’s race to keep global warming “well below” 2 degrees celsius.

The IEA has updated its Tracking Clean Energy Progress (TCEP) report by examining 38 technologies that are key to securing the low-emission energy supply required to hit the ambitious low-carbon target signed off in the Paris Agreement in 2016.

The IEA findings may make for grim reading overall, with only four of those technologies given the green light for reining in destructive global warming, but PV power and electric vehicles (EVs) are among the few success stories – just as PV was in the original TCEP report five years ago.

The work of some 6,000 IEA researchers, the report concluded PV is on track to meet the ambitious targets of the Sustainable Development Scenario (SDS) outlined in the 2017 World Energy Outlook to achieve the rapid but achievable reduction of the world’s carbon footprint required to hit the Paris ambition.

In fact PV, and more specifically PV in China, is blazing a trail after last year’s record 34% growth was twice the average 17% annual growth required annually to 2030 to achieve the SDS target.

That extra 416 TWh of PV generation amounted to almost 2% of the world’s electricity generation with the 53 GW of capacity added in China the lion’s share of the 95-98 GW added worldwide as the Communist nation accounted for more than 55% of global PV demand and boasted more than two-thirds of the world’s module manufacturing.
