Dry Bulk Market Prime for Yet Another Spike Says Shipbroker

The dry bulk market’s recovery is well underway, as evidenced by the firm activity noted even during the Chinese New Year Holidays, which are traditionally a period of easing. Shipbrokers are now bullish for the market’s freigh rates’ increases, as we are headed for a traditionally strong “grain season”. In its latest weekly report, shipbroker Allied Shipbroking said that “with the Chinese New Year Festivities finally coming to a close, a flow of positive sentiment seems to be overwhelming markets, with many now seeing a great deal of opportunity emerging across most of the different shipping sectors. Obviously, Dry Bulkers have been the main beneficiaries thus far, with many having seen the rapid shift in conditions that took place during 2017 as an indicator of the better days to come. This seems to be further affirmed by the trends noted thus far in the year in terms of freight rates with, all size groups having consistently outperformed the respective freight rate levels they where noting during the same time frame last year”.

According to Allied’s, George Lazaridis, Head of Research & Valuations, “what’s more is that during the crucial Chinese New Year festivities, a period in the year which is typically characterized by a drop in the overall freight market and a relative quiet in terms of chartering activity as most Far East traders take their leave, things were radically different this time around. In the midst of the holiday period the market sparked to life in the Far East helping drive up rates, while setting the tone for the next couple of weeks. There is a feel now that we should see a fair improvement in the market, while the approaching grain season should help drive a relatively strong spike”.

Lazaridis added that “this latter point is further enhanced by the strong overall performance noted in the grain and soybean trades. The drive in seaborne trade however does not seem to be limited to the dry bulk space. The improved outlook and performance noted in most of the major emerging and developed economies has helped drive markets across the whole commodities space. Sure, things are relatively more troubled in the crude oil and oil products space, yet even here there seems to be a Far Eastern demand drive that should help push for a gradual improvement in the overall tanker market balance”.

According to Allied’s analyst, “the improved global economic environment has also helped boost conditions in the gas carrier and containership sectors. There are still a number of possible disruptors threatening the viability of this latest market drive, however when looking at these closely, they seem to hold a possibility for minimal attrition effects to the overall upward trend being seen. Combining all of this with the state of the respective “in service” fleets and orderbooks for each of the main 4 shipping sectors and it seems as though there is a strong argument emerging in favor of high optimism”.

Meanwhile, “this optimism is now slowly also showing face in the secondhand and newbuilding markets, with investment appetite on the rise from both shipowners as well as financiers. In terms of the latter though, there is still a considerable gap to be filled, despite the fact that this is slowly starting to be tackled by more novel financing structures and a floury of new sources of capital. This gap in financing coupled by the fact that it has only been a short while since the bottoming out of earnings in each of these respective sectors have surely acted as temporary “brakes”, though given the gradual rise in earnings we are surely to see ever more buying interest flock to both the secondhand and newbuilding markets. There is certainly more room for price gains to be made in some sectors compared to others, taking into consideration where values are right now. However even in sectors such as that of dry bulkers, where asset prices have already risen considerably during the course of the past year, their much better freight market performance could still drive considerable increases in values over the next 12 months”, Lazaridis concluded.

Oslo (TDN Direkt): Capesize-ratene har vært under press den seneste uken, skriver skipsmeglerforetaket Fearnleys i sin ukerapport onsdag ettermiddag.

Trenden er ikke overraskende, og ratene ventes å ta seg opp igjen nærmere påske.

I panamax-markedet har det vært en ny uke med høyere rater og positiv stemning.

FFA: Levels firmer across the board on better volume Cape index flat and looks like shorts are covering + fresh new optimism. Pmx/Smx firmer and supported expecting PMX flat/touch firmer on index while SMX may be again rather stronger.

Herlig med innsidekjøp. Den posten ble gjennomført i går etter hva jeg kan huske. Mulig en liten dipp i morgen (nå 70,16.- etter at utbytte er trukket fra) etter Mr. Trumps siste sprell. Er først og fremst Canada (og Brasil) som blir berørt av denne tariffen. Hva eventuelt China svarer med er jeg mer bekymret for. Kanskje ikke så mye for Capeflåten, men Panamaxene.

Men bør se på halslinja rundt 780.
TA er ok, men ingen eksakt vitenskap.

Poenget nå er at uansett hva man kjøper, så blir det nedgang i dette neste dag.
Om man ikke venter på bekreftelse på vending opp igjen.
Det som virker billig, kan ofte bli ennå billigere i en slik tilstand.

GOGL kan forsåvidt feile teknisk, dersom frykt og annen irrasjonelle krefter overtar.
Det ligger vel litt til rette nå for oppgang, men dersom USA vil korrigere vil jo OSE følge på.
Da kan GOGL feile i sitt bullish triangle.

Trump har vært ute med sleifkjeften før, det er ikke bare å iverksette noe fra dag 1 etter at noe er uttalt.

Dagen i dag ser ikke så bra ut, men de av oss som har vært med helt siden i går eller lengere, kan nå se fram til et utbytte på $ 0,10.
Noen meglerhus kalte dette en vits, og med det tolker jeg de forventer mye høyere utbytter i framtiden.
Så litt i loggen, og i 2008 mottok jeg $ 0,45 og $ 0,55 pr kvartal.
Kanskje allerede i Q3 og Q4-18 kan gi oss saftige utbytter :)

Nesten 225' aksjer ble dekket inn av Marshall i går. Andelen synlig short er nå 3 062 742 (2,13%).

Hyggelig å se at Marshall har redusert shorten sin fra 3,583 mill aksjer til kun 1,357 mill aksjer siden 25.10.17.
Og dette får Are Strandli i Hegnar til å mene at Marshall forbereder seg på kraftig bulknedgang.
Strandli er enten betalt av investorer som vil billig inn, eller så har han ikke satt seg inn i hva han skriver om. Begge deler er like ille om han skal være en seriøs shippinganalytiker.

Dry Bulk Market Getting Airborne: Time To Fly?

In 1896, Wilbur and Orville Wright began to experiment with flight in their bicycle shop in Dayton, Ohio. But it was another seven years until the brothers successfully flew the world’s first powered aeroplane, with the maiden flight lasting just 12 seconds. Today’s bulkcarrier owners, holding out for loftier earnings, would likely empathise; getting airborne, and staying there, is a real challenge.
Back To Earth With A Bump

The bulkcarrier market has also been struggling for lift-off for seven years. Since the start of 2011, earnings have averaged $9,475/day, hardly a sky-high performance. In early 2013, the market was reeling from four years of double digit fleet growth, with average bulker earnings in January standing at $7,077/day, the lowest level since late 2008. However, 2013 initially seemed like a turning point. Earnings improved during the year, and sentiment became palpably more positive. But it wasn’t to last. Over the next few years, earnings were eroded once more, and had dropped to a new record low by early 2016.
However, the market improved over the course of 2016, just as in 2013. Further gains were made in 2017, with earnings last year averaging $10,986/day, the highest level since 2011. With owners hoping that the recent gains will prove more sustainable, what happened after 2013 to bring the market back down to rock bottom just a few years later?

A Holding Pattern

Firstly, supply-side pressure remained prominent. Deliveries did slow in 2013, but at 63m dwt represented the fourth highest annual total on record. Deliveries subsequently remained at a still significant 49m dwt p.a. in 2014-16, after contracting reached a robust 167m dwt in 2013-14. However, supply trends appear more encouraging this time around. Deliveries slowed to 38m dwt in 2017, and are projected to ease further to c.25m dwt in both 2018 and 2019, following two years of more subdued ordering. Perhaps owing to greater investor caution, finance constraints or retrenched shipyard capacity, ordering in 2016-17 was 70% lower than in 2013-14, at 51m dwt.
Flights Grounded

The demand side has also had an impact. Despite reasonably firm growth of c.6% p.a. in dry bulk trade in 2013 and 2014, expansion then started to slow dramatically, and total trade volumes remained flat in 2015, the worst performance since 2009, and contributing to a renewed build-up of surplus capacity. However, dry bulk trade growth picked up in 2016 to 2%, and again to 4% in 2017.
Earning Your Wings

So, some gains in the bulkcarrier market have been made in the last two years, and so far, they have largely held. What heights can be reached is open to debate; the supply side is looking more manageable, and demand trends seem supportive, although demand shocks are of course, by nature, hard to predict. The Wright Brothers knew well that finally getting airborne took time; and while the bulker market is clearly not yet at cruising altitude, after a prolonged struggle it seems that it may, for now, have at least managed to stay clear of the ground.

Baltic Dry index har en tendens til å bunne ut i februar.
Både i 2016 og 2017 sjedde dette, og hver gang trinnvis høyere (291-741-1084)
For 2018 ser dette ut til å gjenta seg nå(1084), etter at man ser gryende tegn på ny oppgang i indexen siden det toppet på 1702 i desember 2017.

Ja Kjepet. Marshall har hatt utolig flaks, eller kanskje utøvd en kløkt med å styre kursen. Det var meget tydelig i dag at "noen" ikke ville ha kursen over 70,60.
Marshall har nå redusert shorten med ca 2/3 deler fra toppen i oktober. Kursen vil vel ikke ta av før Marshall får dekket inn, men det trenger ikke ta så lang tid nå.
Det er fortsatt Money talks! Og nå ser det jo ikke så værst ut over dammen heller, så vi får kanskje en fin dag i morgen også :)
