Utdrag:

State-controlled Brazilian operator Petrobras plans to contract a massive proprietary seismic survey covering nine pre-salt fields and two high-profile areas that were acquired last year in a bid round in the Santos basin.

The job will cover nearly 20,000 square kilometres in water depths of between 1300 metres and 2500 metres, and will feature a series of high-resolution 4D seismic acquisition campaigns using ocean-bottom node (OBN) technology.

Petrobras intends to carry out the programme over a five-year period, with mobilisation starting in mid-2020. Sources told Upstream they expect the company to approach the market in the next few months with an invitation to tender.

“We expect this to be a big contract, but we do not know if Petrobras will be looking to split it between more than one company, as there is some overlap in the timeline of the seismic surveys,” said a source.

Seabed Solutions, BGP Marine, Magseis Fairfield and SAExploration are among the companies that are expected to be invited to participate in the forthcoming tender, sources suggested.

Work is earmarked to begin at the Sepia field in October 2020, according to the timeline submitted by Petrobras to federal environmental regulator Ibama.

The five-month 4D survey using OBN will cover an area of 773 square kilometres.

Seismic activities in Sepia will be resumed in early 2025 with permanent reservoir modelling after the field is on stream via the Carioca floating production, storage and offloading vessel. In parallel to the Sepia campaign, Petrobras will shoot 1050 square kilometres at the Sapinhoa field from November 2020 to February 2021, with reservoir monitoring eyed for mid-2023.

Starting in March 2021, Petrobras plans 4D seismic jobs at Lula and Uirapuru. The job in Uirapuru, located to the north of the Equinor-operated Carcara pre-salt development and where Petrobras is understood to be looking to spud a wildcat by the end of the year, is expected to last nine months covering 2216 square kilometres.

The so-called full-field 4D programme at Lula will be the longest in the pre-salt province, running approximately 16 months and spreading across 4079 square kilometres. Permanent reservoir monitoring activities are earmarked for 2024.

From late 2021 to mid-2022, Petrobras will carry out surveys at Sagitario, Itapu and Tres Marias spanning 1123 square kilometres, 803 square kilometres and 1265 square kilometres, respectively.

Petrobras also intends to install permanent reservoir monitoring at the Itapu field in the second half of 2024, around a year after production from the field starts.

Next in line is the Iara cluster, where 4D seismic using OBN over an area of 2044 square kilometres should take place between July 2022 and March 2023.

Petrobras will then install permanent reservoir monitoring at the Mero field covering 681 square kilometres, and will wrap up the programme by running a pair of large surveys in the Buzios and Jupiter fields starting in mid-2023.

The eight-month Buzios campaign will span over 2739 square kilometres, while the Jupiter 4D seismic will cover 3144 square kilometres to be completed in June 2024.

All OBN campaigns will require the use of a pair of specialised vessels, one to serve as the seismic source generation vessel and the other for node deployment with help from a remotely-operated vehicle. Two additional supply boats will assist in the operations
