Will Coca-Cola bottles be recorded soon?

By La Provence -- September 17, 2019 at 3:08 PM

Coca-Cola France acknowledges that plastic bottles are not sufficiently recycled and would like to see a deposit system put in place even if it costs the consumer more.

The president of Coca-Cola France, François Gay-Bellile, supports the idea of the directive, but believes that the current system will have to be completely overhauled to reach the targets of 100% recycled packaging waste in France, he said on Monday. "Thereis an ongoing consultation by the government to find the best solutions to do this. If we put all the goodwill together, I think we can collect 100% and turn what is waste into resources,"he said at a press briefing.

According to him, there are now"not enough plastics"to run the recycling plants. The group"expressed its supportfor the deposit" for"the integration of at least 50% recycled plastic and to ensure that all our packaging is recyclable," he explains.

He acknowledges that the directive"will necessarily have an impact"on prices, and"it must be evaluated". "Atfirst people think it's more expensive, but once you get into the habit of bringing the bottles back, you realize it's the same price,"he said.

Dette er helt Konge!! Denne guidingen vil nok snart gjelde GLOBALT i Coca Cola.

The Anti-Waste Bill for the Circular Economy, which will be debated in open session in the Senate starting September 24, provides, in section L. 541-10-8 of the Environment Code, to impose on producers or their eco-organism the deployment of a paid deposit device to retrieve the bottles. To inform the debate on the impacts of the implementation of this system, a steering committee was set up last June. Bringing together elected officials, representatives of product manufacturers, industry manufacturers and associations, this committee explored the conditions and modalities for the implementation of packaging in France.

After hearing from nearly 50 stakeholders, Jacques Vernier, co-chair of the steering committee, delivered his first conclusions to Secretary of State Brune Poirson. While it hopes that the directive can be put in place by 2022, the technical modalities have not yet been validated. A second phase of consultation will help to define the different possible scenarios of a deployment of a "French-" directive both during the debate in Parliament and also in the steering committee.
What might the deposit device look like?

The European Union requires us to collect 90% of plastic bottles by 2029. None of the 10 European countries that have implemented such a scheme (soon to be 15) has managed to achieve this goal, all materials combined, without a deposit system. Our current collection rate of 55% pushes to subject PET bottles to the device. While the deposit of steel or aluminum cans, which have a very low recycling rate (30%), was immediately considered by manufacturers, other materials are still debated: this is the case with glass or cardboard bricks.

A deposit of less than 0.10 euros would not be effective because it would result in only low returns. To motivate consumers to return empty containers, it could be set at $0.15.

Another key factor in the success of the deposit is a sufficient mesh of recovery points (by machine or manual). The Drink Collective study proposes to implement 27,000 deconsignation machines and a total of 110,000 recovery points, or about 1.7 per 1000 inhabitants, which is rather in the upper range of other European countries.
