Thomas COOK

Norwegian and Iberia the most benefited companies after the bankruptcy of Thomas Cook and the flight of Ryanair

The bankruptcy of the British company Thomas Cook and the closure of the three bases that Ryanair has in the Canary Islands open the door for other airlines to expand their number of flights to satisfy the void that will be generated from January. Among the main beneficiaries will be Norwegian and Iberia Express, two of the operators with the highest number of flights to the islands.

On January 8, Ryanair will leave its bases in Las Palmas, Tenerife Sur and Lanzarote, next to the one in Girona, although the Canary Islands are some of its most profitable operations centers. Industry sources highlight that "the bankruptcy of Thomas Cook and Ryanair's decision have been very sudden, so the rest of the airlines will not have enough time to increase the number of flights for the winter campaign."

However, the same sources add that in the long term it is a market that moves a high number of tourism, so there will be several operators interested in expanding their offer within the islands. Another company designated as one of the candidates to take advantage of this situation is the German operator Tui , which has offices throughout the United Kingdom and is, right now, the only major tour operator in Europe.

Rising prices

One of the main fears of tourist employers and citizens is that the price of tickets to fly to the islands increases due to a drop in supply , as a result of the abandonment of two major airlines such as Thomas Cook and Ryanair.

This weekend Ryanair announced that in the next six months it could acquire some of the airplanes , of the Airbus brand, of the Thomas Cook ravine , which it would allocate to the fleet of its subsidiary Lauda Motion. "Potentially, we might be interested in the next six months in some of its Airbus to incorporate them into the Lauda fleet, based in Vienna," said Kenny Jacob, Ryanair's chief marketing officer.

The Council of Ministers approved last Friday via Royal Decree Law, a package of urgent measures worth more than 700 million euros aimed at alleviating the effects of the insolvency of the Thomas Cook business group. The actions and measures respond, mainly, to a principle of temporality and attend to all the affected autonomous communities, and especially to the Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands for being territories uniquely affected by the situation.

Selskaper i finansielle problemer dumper aksjekurs i emisjon, ref XXL.
