Monetization (also written monetisation) is a term used to describe various processes.

In banking the term refers to the process of converting or establishing something into legal tender. While it usually refers to the coining of currency or the printing of banknotes by central banks, it may also take the form of a promissory currency.

The term "monetization" may also be used informally to refer to exchanging possessions for cash or cash equivalents, including selling a security interest, charging fees for something that used to be free, or attempting to make money on goods or services that were previously unprofitable or had been considered to have the potential to earn profits. And data monetization refers to a spectrum of ways information assets can be converted into economic value.

In some industry sectors such as high technology and marketing, monetization is a buzzword for adapting non-revenue-generating assets to generate revenue.

By David Orme, SVP, IDEX Biometrics ASA

By 2023, the global biometrics market is predicted to grow by more than 15%, to over $24 billion. Yet, despite many of today’s most commonly-adopted biometric technologies stemming from Silicon Valley, such as Apple’s Touch ID, only 30% of that growth market will come from North America. So, if it is no longer just North America where consumers are rapidly embracing the security of biometric authentication, where else in the world is the growth of the sector coming from? Surprisingly, much of this progress is taking place in emerging markets such as Latin America, Africa and Asia. Recent developments in these regions have shown they can rapidly incorporate biometric technology into country-wide banking, government IDs and retail programmes, without being held back by legacy technology and systems which have delayed wider biometric adoption across Europe and North America.

Disrupting the Asian retail market with a smile 😊😊

According to a Technavio report, 36% of the global biometrics market growth will come from the Asia Pacific region. In this region, China is already ahead of the rest of the world when it comes to biometric-authorised payments. In fact, it’s being adopted so quickly that cash is fast becoming obsolete in urban China, where the mobile payments market is worth around $12.8 trillion, led by fingerprint-to-pay apps, roughly 50 times the value of the mobile payment market in the USA.

AliPay, China’s biggest payment app, from e-commerce giant Alibaba, has 870 million registered users on its fingerprint-to-pay service. The brand even recently launched a trial ‘smile-to-pay’ feature at a branch of KFC in Southern China, which uses facial recognition to identify the customer at a self-order terminal and automatically charges them via the payment app – meaning the store has no cashiers, no tills and near-instant order collect.

"With its highly developed financial services sector and large private wealth market, Australia is a key geography for payment providers rolling out new biometric payment card services across the APAC region".

https://www.idexbiometrics.com/idex-biometrics-expands-its-patent-coverage-for-on-card-enrollment-for-biometric-smart-cards-into-apac/

Across the Asia-Pacific region, we see card use growing rapidly compared to cash and biometric payment cards offer unique benefits to those card users. IDEX’s low cost, convenient invention for enrollment removes a barrier to mass deployment of biometric cards to the public. We expect unconnected remote on-card enrollment to become the de-facto standard for biometric smart card enrollment worldwide and IDEX is ideally positioned with the granting of this foundational patent.”

Hvordan forklarer du samarbeidet her da?

IDEX Biometrics has sealed a licensing deal with one of its prominent APAC partners. The company has announced that Chutian Dragon has purchased a license for the use of IDEX’s biometric enrollment technology for biometric cards.

IDEX first teamed up with Chutian Dragon last November. Chutian Dragon is a major China-based card maker certified by Amex, China UnionPay, JCB, Mastercard, and Visa; and in announcing the strategic partnership at the time, IDEX placed Chutian Dragon’s production capacity at up to 700 million units per year, suggesting it could become an important ally in bringing IDEX’s fingerprint sensor technology to the region’s card market.

Now, Chutian Dragon has signed onto a royalty-bearing agreement allowing it to leverage IDEX’s on-card enrollment technology in order to produce “on-card enrollment devices,” according to a statement announcing the deal. IDEX’s biometric enrollment system is based on the use of a lightweight receptacle into which a payment card (or other smart card) can be inserted for user registration. At the time, the user is prompted to scan their fingerprint on the card, with the electronic receptacle establishing a link between the user’s biometrics and the card; from there, the card can authenticate that user – and only that user – for any subsequent transactions.

News of the deal with Chutian Dragon comes just a week after IDEX’s announcement of a similar licensing agreement with IDEMIA; and in its announcement, IDEX indicated that “Further license agreements are anticipated over time.”

The deal’s announcement also comes after IDEX and Chutian Dragon revealed plans to collaborate with PAX Technology Limited on biometric payment terminals and related software earlier this year, suggesting the Chutian Dragon has become an increasingly important strategic partner since it first teamed up with IDEX less than a year ago.

“I’m delighted that IDEX is extending its relationship with Chutian Dragon through this license agreement,” commented IDEX Biometrics CEO Stan Swearingen, adding that the biometric enrollment system covered in the agreement “is destined to grow in popularity and help bring biometric smart cards into mainstream use.”

IDEX Biometrics – Let’s Talk Hardware

Welcome to our second Let’s Talk post on how IDEX Biometrics is more than just a component supplier in the biometric fingerprint sensor space. In this post, Peter Kollig, Senior Director of Engineering, Systems Architecture at IDEX Biometrics, discusses the hardware components of the biometric platform.

The hardware components of the IDEX Biometrics platform consists of the following:

The Secure Element (SE) provided by our preferred SE partners, (CEC Huada, Infineon, ST Microelectronics, Fudan Microelectronics and Tsinghua Tongfang) which the customer uses with the appropriate SE Card Operating System (COS)
A Biometric Micro-Controller Unit (B-MCU), which is an off-the-shelf ultra-low powered MCU
The Fingerprint Sensor or Fingerprint Sensor Module – our off-chip sensor using our flexible polymer substrate with the IDEX proprietary Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC)
The IDEX system powered from the Near Field Communication (NFC) unit (no batteries or super-cap required). Our Power Management (PM) hardware harvests energy from the NFC antenna, rectifies the antenna voltage, and provides a regulated supply to the B-MCU and the sensor. The PM hardware provides rectified antenna voltage to B-MCU to enable software-based PM.
As part of our solution, we provide schematics, Gerber files, SE software and a complete set of documents. This provides a comprehensive, all-around solution designed to meet the needs of every customer.

Each of these key points is a factor in the development of IDEX’s biometric fingerprint platform and solutions and provides ample opportunity for growth and development, a philosophy that IDEX fully embraces. With a goal of user accessibility and ease of use, bringing biometrics to new sectors has become a key focus of the company. These advances in technology have come from significant efforts, including testing and piloting the solutions in a variety of situations where they provide significant benefits to our customers.

The future of the biometric fingerprint sensor market is ripe with possibility, and we look forward to advancing the technology and help it grow into a commonly used and trusted means of identification and authentication.

Global card expenditure to reach $45 trillion by 2023 – contactless driving growth.

Payment cards were used for purchases with a value of $25.1 trillion worldwide in 2017, an increase of 13% on the year before.

Although card expenditure is growing strongly, it is being outpaced by growth in the number of payments, as cards are increasingly being used for lower-value payments, often displacing cash in smaller retailers for goods such as drinks and snacks.

RBR’s Global Payment Cards Data and Forecasts says global card expenditure will grow at an average of 10% per year between 2017 and 2023 to reach $45.2 trillion.

The average value of a payment, however, will fall from $67 to $62 over the same period as the influence of contactless cards grows – the latter are typically used for the lowest-value payments, and particularly those which would previously have been made with cash.

Both customers and merchants appreciate the convenience of contactless payments, partly because the need to enter a PIN is removed, but also because transactions are much quicker.

Chinese cards used less frequently, but for higher value purchases

According to the research, Asia-Pacific accounts for 50% of global card expenditure, which is much higher than its 28% share of the number of payments. The main reason for this is that in China, cards tend to be used for cash withdrawals rather than payments, and when they are used at POS, it is typically for high-value purchases such as property deposits and vehicles.

Average card payment value falling

The report shows that debit cards account for 55% of spending on cards worldwide, some way below their share of the number of payments. This is because debit cards are most commonly used for low-value purchases, whereas credit cards are usually used for more expensive items. As the influence of contactless grows, debit cards’ share of global card expenditure will continue to fall.

The value of card payments worldwide will doubtless continue to rise, but the average value of a payment will keep falling.

“Consumers worldwide are becoming more comfortable with using their cards for inexpensive goods, especially as contactless cards become commonplace,” says Daniel Dawson, who led the research project. “As they increasingly expect to be able to use contactless cards across the board, the average value of a payment will continue to fall.”

In response to the news that global card expenditure is forecast to almost double over the next four years as a result of a continued growth in contactless payments, David Orme, SVP at IDEX Biometrics commented below as part of our experts comments series highlighting the need to address card fraud now to secure our future as a cashless nation.

David’s comment also discusses how recent advancements in biometric fingerprint technology could provide the answer by allowing people to be far better protected, without having to compromise security for convenience.

David Orme, Senior Vice President at IDEX:

“The news that global card expenditure is set to almost double over the next four years due to surging growth in contactless payments continues to highlight the reality that we are swiftly moving towards a cashless society. However, in order to become a truly successful cashless society, we must first address card fraud, which remains a serious and increasingly urgent problem. In 2016 alone, fraud losses on UK issued cards totalled £618 million, a 9% increase from the previous year.

To address fraudulent card usage and secure our future as a cashless nation, recent advancements in biometric fingerprint technology is set to transform the physical payment card as we know it. Due to their unique and personal nature, connecting fingerprints to the payment card is an ideal means to provide stronger authentication via contactless and contact transactions. In fact, IDEX Biometrics research revealed 56% of consumers surveyed state they would trust the use of their fingerprint to authenticate payments more than the traditional PIN.

By using biometrics people making card payments will no longer have to compromise security for convenience, as no consumer habit change is required. Key players within the banking industry are already heavily invested in this new digital payment technology and we predict that biometric smart payment card adoption will go into many millions in 2019.”

Do You Take Cards?
Payment Cards Still Rule In A Cashless Society

The banking industry needs to future-proof payment cards as UK consumers are still not ready to give up their bank cards.

As the UK fast progresses towards a cashless society, consumers have made it clear they are not prepared to give up their bank cards. Research by IDEX Biometrics ASA has revealed that three quarters (75%) of UK consumers are concerned about the UK becoming a cardless society, where they no longer have access to a physical debit card and could only rely on mobile payments. Evidently, UK consumers are actually more worried about the idea of a cardless society, than a cashless one.

For more than a third (37%) of consumers, as long as they have a debit card, the thought of a cashless society doesn’t bother them. Maybe not surprisingly, this is even more pronounced among young consumers, with 53% of 25-34-year-olds unworried about our growing cashless society, providing they still have a bank card.

These findings highlight that banks and financial institutions need to reconsider the cashless transition. This is true for all generations, as only 20% of all UK consumers believe we should already be a cashless society, but particularly so for the older generations, with only 9% of over 55s agreeing we should already be cashless.

In fact, despite the increasing popularity of smartphone payment apps, six-in-ten (60%) respondents would not give up their debit card in favour of mobile payments. This caution is likely stemming from security concerns, with a further 68% stating they still feel more secure using their debit card than a mobile payment and half (50%) of consumers concerned that contactless payments are insecure.

However, four-in-ten (41%) would trust the use of their fingerprint to authenticate payments from their bank card more than a PIN. This figure remains consistent across all age groups, highlighting consumers’ confidence in payment cards secured by biometric authentication.

For more than a third (37%) of consumers, as long as they have a debit card, the thought of a cashless society doesn’t bother them.

Misuse of mobile payments is another major concern for consumers. 58% worry that if they lost their mobile phone, people would be able to access their bank accounts. In contrast, even if stolen or lost, a biometric bank card can’t be misused without the owner’s fingerprint.

“With UK consumers showing their continued attachment to bank cards, it’s time for the financial services industry to future-proof payment cards for the next generation. Customers are still sceptical about mobile payment apps but, given their security concerns, they also require more protection than a PIN currently provides”, comments David Orme, SVP of IDEX Biometrics ASA.

“This shows that there is a clear demand for payment cards that provide the convenience of contactless payments with the added security of biometric fingerprint authentication. As the owner’s fingerprint needs to be present for biometric payment cards to work, reliable bank cards enhanced with biometric technology will prevent misuse and card fraud. This will bring reassurance to all consumers as the UK continues to progress towards a cashless society”, added Orme

IDEX has successfully completed a private placement of shares, raising NOK 90 million (USD 10 million)

Oslo, Norway, 18 November 2019:  IDEX Biometrics ASA, a leading provider of advanced fingerprint identification and authentication solutions, has successfully obtained subscription for 120 million new shares at NOK 0.75 per share, raising NOK 90.0 million (USD 9.9 million). This fundraising will meet the company's capital requirements and the board expects, based on current market conditions, that these funds will take the company through to profitability. The new shares were placed to eight shareholders about 1 % below the closing price at Oslo Børs on 15 November 2019. The board believes that the private placement is an appropriate funding mechanism at the current time and is in the best interest of the company and all of its shareholders. The board considers it is appropriate to waive the existing shareholders' preferential right to subscribe for new shares because the placement secures timely financing for the company while balancing shareholders' dilution and risk. The placement is divided into two tranches. Tranche one, consisting of 55.4 million shares, will be issued as soon as practical under the board's current authorization to issue shares in private placements. The second tranche, consisting of 64.6 million shares, will be issued subject to approval by an extraordinary general meeting. The board has resolved to call an extraordinary general meeting to be held on or around 12 December 2019. A notice of the extraordinary general meeting will be issued in due course. The company will issue a listing prospectus in connection with tranche two. Following the tranche one capital increase, IDEX will have a share capital amounting to NOK 98,012,120.85 divided into 653,414,139 shares at NOK 0.15 nominal value per share. Following the tranche two capital increase, IDEX will have a share capital amounting to NOK 107,698,309.80 divided into 717,988,732 shares at NOK 0.15 nominal value per share. The company's strategy to be a leader in delivering fingerprint solutions to mass markets is based on a unique flexible and cost efficient off-chip technology. Recent milestones achieved by the company highlight the tangible progress the company has made and validates the growing demand for biometric solutions. In the biometric payment card market, the company's largest potential revenue opportunity, there are positive developments in manufacturing and certification, while the company's remote enroll solution has the potential to become the industry standard. In the access control market, the company is seeing the beginning of shipments and design-in wins and the company expects that both markets will see volume shipments in 2020. Stan Swearingen, CEO of IDEX said: "We are delighted to secure this funding from existing shareholders. This funding will secure necessary capital to meet the impending market growth and large-scale commercialization of biometric smart cards, and enable IDEX to be a leader in the large and growing biometric smart card market. This investment is a strong endorsement of the significant value- creation potential of IDEX's fingerprint biometric technology for its customers, partners, and sharehold
