Plastic industry hit hard by abrupt scrap import ban

Third Tomra at SWEEEP Kuusakoski

WEEE reprocessor SWEEEP Kuusakoski, based in Kent, has taken delivery of its third TOMRA sorter.

SWEEEP say the sorter will work in tandem with its existing metal finder at a combined sorting rate of 6 tonnes per hour.

Tomra’s object recognition controls 960 air jets all primed to sort circuit board away from plastic. SWEEEP says the end result is an “exceptional level of sorting resolution, making it possible to identify even the finest particles with great precision.”

Tomra says its machine ensures that plant operators enjoy “both high throughput and constant superior quality output”.

Modular flexibility and Intelligent Object Recognition (IOR) means that the FINDER is adaptable across multiple applications within metal recovery segments.

Exports to Thailand collapse after ban

Thailand portA Thai policy restricting the import of scrap plastics has proved effective. U.S. scrap plastic exports to the country dropped by 94 percent after the ban took hold.


U.S. exporters sent 1.5 million pounds of recovered plastic to Thailand in July, the most recent month for which statistics are available. That’s a substantial decline from the 27.1 million pounds the U.S. shipped to Thailand in June, as well as the 41.6 million pounds sent in May.

The latest export figures were released Wednesday by the U.S. government.

Thai authorities in late June announced they would halt scrap plastic imports amid a rising volume of material stuck at ports. In late August, the government described plans to make the ban permanent within two years.

Overall, U.S. exporters sent 203.1 million pounds of scrap plastic to Thailand from January through July, up from 15.5 million pounds during that period in 2017.

The July 2018 figure is by far the lowest volume shipped from the U.S. to Thailand this year.

Elsewhere in the region

Vietnam and China both imported their lowest U.S.-sourced plastics volumes of the year in July.

Vietnam brought in 3.1 million pounds, down from 10.2 million pounds in June and significantly down from 38.9 million pounds in May. The drop accompanied growing interest by the Vietnamese government in restricting scrap plastic flowing into the country. Officials in July announced they would stop issuing new scrap import licenses.

China imported 5.5 million pounds of scrap plastic from the U.S. in July. It’s the lowest volume of the year and is down from the 7.3 million pounds of the material shipped to China the previous month. Overall, China has imported an average of 10.3 million pounds of scrap plastic from the U.S. per month this year.

Stor handel med plast

Det er i dag en stor internasjonal handel med plastavfall, med tilhørende risiko for at deler av dette havner på avveie og dermed til slutt havner i miljøet og i verdenshavene.

Anslag går ut på at åtte millioner tonn plast hvert år havner i verdenshavene. Ifølge World Economic Forum vil det innen 2050 være mer plastsøppel i verdenshavene enn fisk dersom utviklingen fortsetter.

RWM highlights: UK has a ‘pretty comprehensive’ strategy

The UK’s upcoming strategy for recycling and resource efficiency is expected to stimulate stronger markets for secondary materials, including more recycling by businesses, when it is published later this year.

Comments from the resource minister Therese Coffey and others in the past few days have indicated that preparation of the Government’s resource and waste strategy is in the final stages. The release date will be after the Chancellor of the Exchequer’s next Budget because it is expected to include taxation measures to tackle single-use plastics.

Coffey told a Parliamentary hearing that the strategy was ‘pretty comprehensive’. One element is reform of the packaging recovery note (PRN) system the UK uses as part of its producer responsibility compliance scheme.

She said: ‘The benefit of what we’re trying to do with PRN reform is to stimulate the secondary markets, which will help councils in the consideration of what they do with waste. At the moment the only secondary market that works really well is the one for PET’.

The minister said new policies would be aiming to boost the recycling of commercial waste. ‘We certainly want to see businesses themselves [doing] more and we shall certainly be pushing that. We are conscious more needs to be done and that will included specifically in the strategy’.

Coffey also anticipated there would be an increase in domestic processing and said there was no wish to ‘massively’ increase incineration because there was already sufficient capacity.

The new strategy was a constant theme at the RWM event in Birmingham on September 12-13, the biggest event in the UK recycling sector.

Den ene anbudsvinnende entreprenøren (Paprec) skal installere femten TOMRA AUTOSORT 4 Touch maskiner i sitt nybygde anlegg mens den andre (Nicollin) skal installere fire TOMRA AUTOSORT 4 Touch maskiner i sitt moderniserte anlegg, og franskmennen har mye pent å si om kvaliteten på teknologien de har gått til anskaffelse av!

Legg (godt) merke til at denne spanske Tomra-kunden i Madrid opererer 128 avfallshåndteringsanlegg rundt omkring i Spania og er meget fornøyd etter installeringen av Tomras AUTOSORT maskiner. Stort potensial for ytterligere installasjoner, tenker jeg.

Den siste av de fire artiklene nedenfor om plastavfallsproblemet i Hong Kong, illustrerer hvor belastende dette er for selskap som Coca-Cola, Vita. Pepsi Cola, Evian m.fl. Det sier seg selv at deres brands ikke tåler å bli assosiert med denne apokalypsen nå som plastforurensningsproblemet endelig har fått den oppmerksomheten det fortjener i det offentlige rom så noe må gjøres og løsninger vil komme over hele kloden, og Tomra har altså teknologien som kreves.

Almost a quarter of plastic bottles washed up on Hong Kong beaches come from the Coca-Cola Company, according to a survey by a local green group, which is urging producers to take responsibility for the problem.

The Green Earth organised 14 beach cleaning campaigns across the city this summer and found 328 of the 1,404 bottles it collected belonged to Coca-Cola brands.

At 23.4 per cent, the share was the highest of all producers.

“We do beach cleaning every year and the amount of ocean waste keeps growing,” said Hahn Chu Hon-keung, the group’s director of environmental advocacy. “People dropping the bottles are of course lacking in civic virtue, but do producers have a responsibility?”

Twenty brands come under the Coca-Cola umbrella in Hong Kong, including Bonaqua, Minute Maid and Aquarius.

Vita accounted for 21 per cent, and Cool 11.4 per cent.

Unilever topped a similar study carried out at beaches in the Philippines, and PepsiCo accounted for the most bottles in India, the group said, citing data from the Break Free From Plastic movement.

Dette er avanserte greier, men man forstår lett hvilken storspiller Tomra faktisk er innen industrien som jobber med henblikk på mest mulig effektiv resirkulering av de mange forskjellige plastyper som finnes, men som må resirkuleres hver for seg og ikke kan resirkuleres blandet.

The Holy Grail project is one such collaborative effort, focusing on solutions for improved sorting efficiencies and setting standards for tracer and watermark solutions. As part of the initiative TOMRA is helping assess the technical feasibility of new sorting technologies. TOMRA has also been involved in the PRISM project, along with partners including Nextek, Brunel University, CCL, Mirage Inks, Cleantech Europe and WRAP. PRISM has developed coded labels using non-rare earth based luminescent compounds as well as materials recovered from fluorescent lamp recycling. In addition to assisting recovery of PP food packaging, HDPE milk bottles and sleeved PET, it is envisaged that the technology will open up new markets for recovered fluorescent compounds.

Hvis man ser nyheter i norske media om Tomra, er disse uten unntak knyttet til selskapets pantevirksomhet, men i 2.kvartal 2018 bidro sorteringsvirksomheten hårfint mer enn pantevirksomheten til Tomras topplinje. Nå lanseres nok en kjempenyhet fra magikerne i Tomra Sorting Solutions. Jeg tror bestemt man bør merke seg at sjefen i Tomra Sorting Solutions Volker Rehrmann sa "jeg skal være beskjeden og sier at målsetningen fremover er å opprettholde vår globale markedsandel på 60% innen sortering for resirkulering", under Tomras Capital Markets Day 21.september! Ambisjonene er med andre ord enda større, og dette er et forretningsområde kjennetegnet av ekstremvekst!

TOMRA Sorting Recycling has introduced a new-generation X-TRACT machine with innovative Dual Processing Technology which enhances final purity levels; multi-density channels to enable more precise classification and sorting of materials; and a broad range of application packages.

X-TRACT is best known for the sorting of Zorba (shredded mixed nonferrous scrap metals) into aluminum and mixed heavy metals but is now available in five different application packages: the E-Scrap, Organic, Wood, Aluminum, and High Power Pack.

Each Pack optimizes the machine’s performance for specific sorting tasks by precisely tailoring sensor and X-ray set-up. Application packages also have tailored mechanical specifications, fine-tuned to the user’s needs. Some users, for example, need higher material throughputs than others, and some sort heavier materials.”

Dual Processing Technology and multiple density channels
X-TRACT employs X-ray transmission (XRT) technology to sort materials according to differences in their density. Broad-band radiation penetrates the material to provide spectral absorption information which is then measured with a highly sensitive X-ray camera to identify the atomic density of the material, regardless of its thickness.

The Dual Processing Technology enables X-TRACT to distinguish between overlapping objects on the sorting line, a particularly useful advantage when lines are running higher throughputs. This advantage has been made possible by the development of sophisticated software, which can detect and prioritize between single object processing and area processing. X-TRACT is the only machine capable of this.

The introduction of multi-density channels is also a useful advance. Previous X-TRACT models sorted material according to two classes, separating it into high-density and low-density fractions. The new X-TRACT features multiple density channels, allowing a greater number of classes for separating materials according to density, with the maximum precision.

TOMRA has also improved X-TRACT with the new TOMRA ACT. This intuitive user interface enables the setting of several user-levels. TOMRA ACT is placed to optimize the sort and shows operators the most relevant real-time process data at a glance. This information improves monitoring and enables fast adjustments at any time, so the operator is always in control.

Som påpekt gjentatte ganger er den rike verdens dumping av plastavfall i asiatiske nasjoner preget av krampetrekninger og i sluttfasen. Nå følger Malaysia i Kinas, Vietnams og Thailands fortspor og setter foten ned. Som Tomras CEO Stefan Ranstrand påpeker, er det ingen vei utenom. Verdens rike nasjoner må nå samle inn, sortere, rengjøre og resirkulere sitt eget plastavfall. Det er bare å gjøre det. Da må det investeres og Tomra vil profitere. Profitere i stor skala!

Men det kan bli mye mer enn pantesystem å henge fingrene i for Tomra i Skottland. Ambisiøse skotter har nemlig også ambisjoner om å bli verdensledende innen ressurshåndtering og resirkulering. Vær klar over at begrepene avfall og boss rekordraskt nå erstattes av begrepet ressurs, på stadig nye områder. Tomra har 60% global markedsandel når det gjelder Sorting Recycling (sortering for resirkulering), og sorteringssjef Volker Rehrmann sa under Capital Markets Day 21.september at jeg skal være beskjeden og si at vi satser på å beholde en global markedsandel på 60%. Det skinte altså igjennom at han egentlig tror på en enda høyere markedsandel...



CIRCULAR ECONOMY IN SCOTTISH REGIONS WORTH £1BN

Adopting circular business practises in Scotland could be worth £1 billion to two regions alone, according to reports released yesterday (31 October).
Tayside, a region including Dundee and Perth, could see around a £400-million boost to its local economy if it adopts a circular approach to business, while £625 million of potential value is predicted for Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire in North East Scotland.

The figures come from two reports by the Scottish Government-funded circular economy organisation Zero Waste Scotland (ZWS), looking into the potential benefits of a circular economy in the cities and regions of Scotland, moving away from a traditional linear model of production, consumption and disposal towards a model where waste is diminished and natural resources are kept in use at a high value for as long as possible, through reuse, repair and remanufacture.

According to ZWS, a ‘cities and regions’ approach to implementing a circular economy is beneficial because it enables plans to be tailored to the different specialisms and resource bases of different regions. Key circular economy opportunities in both regions were identified in the construction, energy infrastructure, manufacturing and food and drink sectors.

For example, Tayside accounts for 70 per cent of the total land in Scotland used for growing soft fruit, and 49 per cent of land for growing potatoes – by-products and leftovers from these industries constitute ‘significant’ amounts of biomass and potential feedstock that could be recovered rather than going to waste.

In both Tayside and Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire, a significant proportion of the potential economic benefit is located in the construction and built environment sector. Around £238 million is said to be achievable for the latter region in this industry, through measures such as designing new buildings with longevity and easy of maintenance in mind, repurposing obsolete or underused buildings for new, minimising waste and reusing materials.

The reports, produced in partnership with local Chambers of Commerce, were launched by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon at the Circular Economy Hotspot 2018, an annual gathering of international experts in the circular economy, held in Glasgow on 31 October.

Sturgeon said: “These reports show the exciting potential of a circular economy where reducing waste and investing in keeping materials in circulation for as long as possible can release an estimated £1 billion of economic opportunities for Tayside, Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire. This demonstrates the overall scale of the opportunity for Scotland.

“Scotland is already leading the way with its ambitious and challenging targets for recycling which are above and beyond the EU targets. However, we want the narrative to move beyond recycling to reuse, repair and remanufacturing of items. In this light, we are currently considering next steps for introducing a deposit return scheme which will help us achieve our ambitions.”

GLASGOW AIMS TO BE SCOTLAND’S ‘FIRST CIRCULAR CITY’

Glasgow has announced ambitions to become Scotland’s ‘first circular city’, with plans to publish a ‘route map’ to circularity next year.

The announcement came at this year’s Circular Economy Hotspot, an international conference focused on sharing knowledge and ideas around the circular economy. Sustainable business practices across Scotland were showcased at the event, which was held at the SEC Centre in Glasgow (30 October – 1 November).

Glasgow City Council has said it is aiming both to reduce the amount of waste it produces, and to focus on reusing all waste that is generated. Its ‘Circular Economy Route Map’, to be published in 2019, will focus on five key areas: food, textiles, energy, plastics and the built environment. One specific commitment announced at the Hotspot event was for 15 per cent of the city’s homes to be powered by renewable energy by 2030.

Driving the move towards a circular economy in the city is Circular Glasgow, a project launched in 2017 in partnership with Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, Zero Waste Scotland and Circle Economy, and funded with help from the European Regional Development Fund.

Commenting on the new circular commitment for Glasgow, Councillor Susan Aitken said: “The First Minister has announced today that the opportunity for Scotland in embracing the circular economy runs into the billions of pounds. I want Glasgow to be at the forefront of seizing that opportunity.
“The work done by the Chamber of Commerce and Zero Waste Scotland in Circular Glasgow has already put us far ahead of most of our competitors but the opportunities really are limitless. Jeg tenker altså at Tomra har hjulpet skotske politikere till å skjønne verdien av å starte opp med resirkulering av plastavfall jo før jo heller nå som "dumpingplassene" i Sørøst-Asia for dette avfallet er stengt/stenges. Det finnes jo ikke alternativer heller når det ikke lenger finnes steder å dumpe avfallet... Hva betyr så slike resirkuleringsanlegg for Tomra? Mye, ettersom det er Tomra som besitter "state of the art" teknologien for sortering av blandet plastavfall. Scottish Tories propose plastic recycling plant

The Scottish Conservative Party has announced a proposal for a new plastic recycling and waste plant.


The new proposals would look to create jobs while retaining the value of Scottish waste, much of which is exported to China.

A proposal briefing, seen by Energy Voice, claims the plans would “allow Scottish waste to be treated as a valuable resource with the value retained in the Scottish economy”.

The plans also suggest that the plant would “add new recycling/waste treatment capacity to relieve pressure on local authorities/businesses stockpiling plastic” and potentially open up new opportunities “such as drawing in material from the North of England”.

Friends of the Earth scotland director Dr Richard Dixon said: “We welcome the Scottish Tories proposal for a plastic recycling plant in Scotland. It could work in tandem with the forthcoming Deposit Return Scheme and inject fresh impetus into Scotland’s drive towards a circular economy.

“Having dedicated recycling facilities in Scotland will cut down on emissions and costs of transporting materials as well as providing jobs and clear signal of intent on reducing waste.

“As the public pressure mounts to reduce the amount of plastic we use, Grangemouth will start to see a drop in the demand for plastic and the industrial area there starts to look like the obvious place to house a plastics recycling plant in the future.

“Scotland must also tackle plastic pollution at source by preventing its creation by getting to grips with industrial plastic pollution from manufacturing sites. The Scottish Government should also continue actions that help to cut down on our use of unnecessary single-use plastic items such as straws, cotton buds and coffee cups.”

TOMRA Sorting Recycling, supplier of sensor-based sorting equipment, recently installed multiple sorting technologies in the new metal sorting plant at WENDT CORPORATION's Buffalo, N.Y., Technology Center. The new WENDT plant features the latest technologies and processes for cleaning, sorting, and upgrading shredded non-ferrous metals, such as zorba and zurik.

At the heart of the sorting circuit currently lies two TOMRA sensor-based sorters - COMBISENSE and X-TRACT - for metals cleaning, mixed metals sorting, aluminum upgrading and quality control of various shredded aluminum feed material. In Q4 of 2018, WENDT will install a separate line featuring the combination unit of WENDT/TOMRA FINDER with new LOD (laser object detection).

"WENDT introduced its new metal sorting plant at a critical juncture in the market, given the increased purity standards for a number of scrap products and inability for scrap recyclers to sell material to China. The plant output is high-quality, furnace-ready material, and it allows operations to test their material to ensure they are installing the right sorting technology to increase final product purity, maximize profit potential and minimize investment risk," says Eric Thurston, sales manager metals - recycling for TOMRA Sorting Recycling. The specialized TOMRA COMBISENSE sorts by color and shape to separate high purity metal fractions from even the most difficult feed material. It combines a color sensor with SUPPIX® image processing technology that enhances resolution levels by a factor of eight to reduce lost product yield. "With COMBISENSE, customers can make a clean white heavy package or clean red heavy packages like copper, brass, and printed circuit boards (PCBs). They can also separate materials further, depending on market demands," adds Thurston.

X-TRACT offers high-speed X-ray transmission (XRT) with DUOLINE® technology to deliver superior recognition of secondary resources, regardless of material density. Exceptional resolution is achieved to efficiently sort even the most varied metals mix with the smallest grain size. With XRT, customers can create a clean twitch product or separate wrought and cast packages for furnace-ready material for smelters.

Introduced in early 2018 to help operations meet stringent standards like National Sword and soon to be added to the new WENDT sorting plant, TOMRA LOD mounts to the same platform as FINDER to boost a circuit's sorting capabilities without requiring additional floor space. Featuring laser technology, LOD identifies black objects attached to metal material detected by the FINDER's EM3 sensor. LOD allows black rubber, glass and plastic to be separated from zorba and zurik products, which enables these commodities to be turned into a cleaner, more valuable revenue stream.

The new WENDT metal sorting plant is now open for appointments for customers to test feed material.

Her er nyhet jeg glemte å poste under mitt lille "skippertak" på Tomra-tråder seint i går kveld. Har skrevet om dette prosjektet på avfallshåndteringsanlegget "Las Dehesas" i Madrid før. Nå er altså 6 Tomra AUTOSORT maskiner installert på to av de fire linjene for avfallshåndteringen, og man er allerede så fornøyd at man allerede nå vurderer å installere AUTOSORT maskiner på de resterende to linjene. Det som imidlertid er mest interessant er at selskapet Urbaser som opererer "Las Dehesas", opererer ytterligere 128 (!) i forskjellige spanske byer!!! Hører jeg storeslem her? Vel, tiden vil vise. :)

Tomra technology in Las Dehesas

Environmental management company Urbaser, with 128 operations in several Spanish cities, has automated two lines of six autosort systems at the Las Dehesas waste processing center.

Based on the experience of Urbaser, the processing center, which receives more than half of the waste sent to Valdemingómez Technology Park, optimized the packaging processing process by introducing Stadler and Tomra technology.

According to Tomra, the waste processing center Las Dehesas prepares materials for the urban waste and packaging waste streams of the waste collected in the city of Madrid. The processing capacity is 408,000 tonnes of municipal waste and 32,850 tonnes of packaging waste. Las Dehesas has four manual sorting lines for separating recyclable materials. Two of these lines are dual-function lines that can be used for both settlement and packaging waste streams. Each of these lines handles 7.2 tons per hour, which corresponds to a total capacity of 32,850 tons per year.

The modernization project included the automation of the two lines for the treatment of packaging waste, which can also be used for the treatment of municipal waste streams, it goes on to say. Six Autosort systems from Tomra Sorting Recycling were installed in these two lines in a cascading arrangement. Two autosort systems (one per line) separate recyclable plastics and beverage cartons from non-recyclable materials. 60% global markedsandel innen sortering for resirkulering, og han tror egentlig på en enda høyere markedsandel!!! Jeg tror ærlig talt ikke mange skjønner potensialet vi snakker om her nå som eksporten av avfall fra rike til fattige land er inne i sine aller siste krampetrekninger. Den praksisen er altså finito og den rike verden må heretter selv sørge for resirkuleringen på hjemmebane. Heldig er da selskapet som har markedsandel > 60% når det gjelder den nødvendige sorteringsteknologien. Selskapet heter Tomra Systems.

Det er bare å sitte stille i stolen. Eller jeg mener å handle TOM akjser :-) Som sagt er det ikke ofte man får Rolls Royce på billigsalg!! Det går nok snart opp for markedet også. Artikkelen over bekrefter nok en gang hvilket enormt marked som ligger foran Tomra i årene fremover!!! Å dette bare innenfor ettav forretningsområde deres:-)

Tomra trenger ingen rekyl. Tomra vil vokse og gå rolig i pluss. Sammenlign Tomra med aksjer som har like stor omsetning og se etter endring siste måned. Ingen er i nærheten av stabiliteten. 21. Feb kommer q4 og analytikerne kommer til å bli overrasket (som de alltid blir).

Ugjennvinbar plast skal også fjernes fra markedet i 2019 i Europa. Trenger ikke være rakettforsker for å skjønne at Tomra får en formidabel jobb foran seg. Oktober 2019 står Tomra i 400.

Reaching EU plastics target "practically impossible" under current conditions

Raising the amount of recycled plastics that is incorporated into new products as envisioned by the EU Plastics Strategy is “practically impossible” under the current conditions. This is the view of the majority of plastics converters who participated in a survey conducted last year on behalf of the umbrella organisation European Plastics Converters (EuPC).

Respondents stated for only two out of the ten plastic types covered by the survey that sufficient quantities of recycled material are available to reach the EU strategy’s overall target of 10 million tonnes used in manufacturing new products by 2025. When quality is taken into account, the picture worsens even more, with the majority of participants (71 per cent) reporting sufficient recyclate quality for only plastic type, namely PET.

Improving plastics waste collection and sorting is considered the most suitable way to raise the quality of recycled plastic material by a large share of the respondents (76 per cent).
