Tomra sorterer alt.

TOMRA to spotlight X-TRACT and LIBS technologies at Aluminium 2018 Exhibition

Sensor-based sorting technologies can help increase the worldwide supply of aluminum while enhancing sustainability

July 25, 2018

TOMRA Sorting Recycling will showcase its sensor-based sorting technologies at Aluminium 2018, the world trade fair and conference, at Messe Düsseldorf, Germany, from October 9-11, 2018. TOMRA's exhibition stand will spotlight the company's X-TRACT machine (shown above), which separates valuable materials from metal waste, and its state-of-the-art LIBS technology, which accurately sorts and separates different aluminum wrought alloys.

Aluminium 2018 is expected to attract more than 27,000 visitors from 100 countries and will share latest insights into everything from aluminum production to processing, finished goods and recycling. TOMRA can be found on Hall 11, stand no. 11|54. The company's technical experts will be available during all three days of the event to answer visitors' questions.

TOMRA's participation at Aluminium 2018 highlights how the company provides technical solutions to two of the industry's biggest challenges: with global production of aluminum pushed to an all-time high because of the increasing need for light metals for energy transition and transportation, recycling can help meet demand for the material; and with intensifying pressures for sustainability, recycling improves resource conservation.

Frank van de Winkel, TOMRA Sorting Business Development Manager Metals, said: "High levels of aluminum production plus the high accuracy of modern alloy-sorting techniques make it more and more worthwhile to unlock the value from secondary materials that would otherwise be lost. What's more, re-using scrap metal is an environmentally friendly practice which demonstrates the industry's commitment to sustainability. For these reasons we're looking forward to discussing our technologies at Aluminium 2018 with recyclers, smelters and remelters."

TOMRA's X-TRACT separates heavy metals from aluminum alloys with such high precision - regardless of the materials' size, moisture, or surface pollution level - that it achieves aluminum purities of 98-99%, even from a varied mix and with small grain sizes. This technology employs an electric X-ray tube so that broad-band radiation can penetrate the material to provide spectral absorption information. This data is then measured with a highly sensitive X-ray camera to identify the atomic density of the material, regardless of its thickness. Material is sorted into high- and low-density fractions with TOMRA's DUOLINE® sensor technology using two independent sensor lines with different spectral sensitivities.

TOMRA's LIBS-based sensor sorting technology extends the options for the use of scrap- and secondary-aluminum. By employing a dynamic laser which can monitor the entire width of the belt, this has the unique advantage of eliminating the complex and costly need to separate materials into single lanes. This enables the sorting and separation of different aluminum wrought alloys with unprecedentedly high levels of efficiency, achieving sorting accuracies of 99% purity (or greater) with high throughputs of three to seven tons per hour.

Aluminium 2018 will also be an opportunity for recyclers, smelters and remelters to learn how TOMRA customizes technical solutions to fit customer requirements. The combination of state-of-the-art technologies and personalized technical support explains why TOMRA has become one of the leading suppliers of sorting units in North America, Europe and Asia. Over 60 TOMRA units have been sold worldwide for the separation of different scrap sources, such as taint tabor from (old) sheet scrap, extrusion profile scrap, used beverage-can scrap, and production scrap and new scrap from manufacturing waste

Plastic industry hit hard by abrupt scrap import ban

By Vien Thong August 15, 2018 | 02:49 pm GMT+7

Vietnamese plastic firms are unable to import scrap following a ban by the government, and said costs are becoming unaffordable as a result.
“We’ll lose $10 million this year if we cannot import plastic scrap for manufacturing,” Tran Vu Le, director of Le Tran Plastic, told a conference organized Tuesday by the Vietnam Plastic Association (VPA).

Other businesses attending the event said the inadequate plastic recycling in the country means they cannot source scrap locally.

Third Tomra at SWEEEP Kuusakoski

WEEE reprocessor SWEEEP Kuusakoski, based in Kent, has taken delivery of its third TOMRA sorter.

SWEEEP say the sorter will work in tandem with its existing metal finder at a combined sorting rate of 6 tonnes per hour.

Tomra’s object recognition controls 960 air jets all primed to sort circuit board away from plastic. SWEEEP says the end result is an “exceptional level of sorting resolution, making it possible to identify even the finest particles with great precision.”

Tomra says its machine ensures that plant operators enjoy “both high throughput and constant superior quality output”.

Modular flexibility and Intelligent Object Recognition (IOR) means that the FINDER is adaptable across multiple applications within metal recovery segments.

Exports to Thailand collapse after ban

Posted on September 6, 2018
by Colin Staub

Thailand portA Thai policy restricting the import of scrap plastics has proved effective. U.S. scrap plastic exports to the country dropped by 94 percent after the ban took hold.

U.S. exporters sent 1.5 million pounds of recovered plastic to Thailand in July, the most recent month for which statistics are available. That’s a substantial decline from the 27.1 million pounds the U.S. shipped to Thailand in June, as well as the 41.6 million pounds sent in May.

The latest export figures were released Wednesday by the U.S. government.

Thai authorities in late June announced they would halt scrap plastic imports amid a rising volume of material stuck at ports. In late August, the government described plans to make the ban permanent within two years.

Overall, U.S. exporters sent 203.1 million pounds of scrap plastic to Thailand from January through July, up from 15.5 million pounds during that period in 2017.

The July 2018 figure is by far the lowest volume shipped from the U.S. to Thailand this year.

Elsewhere in the region

Vietnam and China both imported their lowest U.S.-sourced plastics volumes of the year in July.

Vietnam brought in 3.1 million pounds, down from 10.2 million pounds in June and significantly down from 38.9 million pounds in May. The drop accompanied growing interest by the Vietnamese government in restricting scrap plastic flowing into the country. Officials in July announced they would stop issuing new scrap import licenses.

China imported 5.5 million pounds of scrap plastic from the U.S. in July. It’s the lowest volume of the year and is down from the 7.3 million pounds of the material shipped to China the previous month. Overall, China has imported an average of 10.3 million pounds of scrap plastic from the U.S. per month this year.

Other Southeast Asian nations stayed fairly consistent in their U.S.-sourced imports in July

The meadows treatment center is automated with TOMRA technology

This plant, which absorbs more than half of the total waste received in the Valdemingómez Technology Park, has been optimized treatment of packaging process

7/09/2018 Filed under: Waste , technology , Community of Madrid

The meadows treatment center processes the residue from both of the rest fraction and fraction container of the city of Madrid, with an annual capacity of 408,000 t-rest and 32,850 t of packaging.

Rangelands has four hand lines for the selection of recoverable materials, two of them ambivalent to work both with remainder fraction fraction container. Each of these lines of treatment of containers processed 7, 2t/h and 32,850 t/year of annual capacity.

The project, consisted in Automation of two of these lines for the treatment of the fraction container, with the possibility of also be used for the treatment of the remaining fraction. They have been installed six teams AUTOSORT TOMRA Sorting Recycling cascade. Two AUTOSORT (one on each line) are responsible for separating recyclable plastics and the brick of which is not reusable. Then other two units (one per line also) to separate the Polietielentereftalato (PET). Finally unifying the flow in a single line, where is located an AUTOSORT for HDPE and other spreading Brick, resulting the Mix by difference in the selection of the other teams.

The project has been carried out by STADLER, one of the companies of the market with greater experience in the field of classification and treatment for the waste industry plants. In the words of Luis Sánchez Vela, Director of STADLER Spain: "the result is very satisfactory. Our experience with the AUTOSORT teams is very positive in combination with mechanical preparation processes implemented by STADLER, since they are solid teams, but for easy handling, calibration, adjustment and maintenance; In addition, these optical separators offer excellent quality and recovery ratios. With these additions improves performance in the recovery of materials from Las Dehesas plant and the quality of the selected material, increasing efficiency. "."

Fernando Cortés Moreno, Manager of UTE Las Dehesas, ensures, moreover, that "it is a robust system, with flexibility to changes in the selection of material from each machine program. In addition, are fulfilling the guaranteed yields and efficiency, obtaining the necessary quality of materials for the fulfilment of the requirements".

AUTOSORT, a highly efficient team

And it is that AUTOSORT offers numerous advantages to the recycling sector, providing the latest technology in classification. It incorporates near-infrared (NIR) sensor, which recognizes the materials on the basis of the specific spectral properties, and visible spectrometry (VIS), which recognizes all colors of the visible spectrum. The combination of both sensors resulting in a team that, in a single modular universal classification system, responds well to basic needs as to other more complex, allowing the classification it simultaneously material and color. For the project in Las Dehesas, teams have only NIR sensor for the classification by material regardless of color.

"For convenience, installed a display system that allows to check the operation of the equipment without the need to see him own display each;" This allows to implement any change in a more optimal way and agile", says Fernando Cortés Moreno.

Fernando Cortés Moreno also highlights its easy maintenance: "To date, we can ensure that the basic maintenance is simple".
It is, therefore, very versatile teams offering various configuration options, easy to handle and that are well adapted to the needs of the client. In the view of Luis Sanchez Vela, "the simplicity of its management is very useful for the operator, who can change the configuration of the equipment without difficulty. This aspect is very advantageous since you can make the changes in materials to classify when necessary."

Needs covered

The meadows treatment center has, in addition to the treatment plant, a plant of composting, a crematory oven of dead animals, a landfill for non-hazardous waste, energy valorisation of biogas and leachate treatment plant produced in landfill. It is, therefore, a major complex that is essential to the daily functioning.

In this respect, the collaboration between STADLER and TOMRA is highly reliable and professional, both when installing the first of the after-sales service of the second response.

"The installation of the equipment and the implementation of them done in a short space of time with a few clearly satisfactory results. And on the rare occasion that has been needed after-sales service to date, this has responded perfectly", says Fernando Cortés Moreno. "All these advantages, make that they are are considering options for the automation of the two remaining lines for the treatment of the rest fraction", concludes.

Kristian Elster
Journalist
Publisert 7. sep. kl. 22:42 Oppdatert i går kl. 23:44

Frykter dumping i fattige land

RWM highlights: UK has a ‘pretty comprehensive’ strategy

RecyclingInternational – September 17, 2018

The UK’s upcoming strategy for recycling and resource efficiency is expected to stimulate stronger markets for secondary materials, including more recycling by businesses, when it is published later this year.

Comments from the resource minister Therese Coffey and others in the past few days have indicated that preparation of the Government’s resource and waste strategy is in the final stages. The release date will be after the Chancellor of the Exchequer’s next Budget because it is expected to include taxation measures to tackle single-use plastics.

Coffey told a Parliamentary hearing that the strategy was ‘pretty comprehensive’. One element is reform of the packaging recovery note (PRN) system the UK uses as part of its producer responsibility compliance scheme.

She said: ‘The benefit of what we’re trying to do with PRN reform is to stimulate the secondary markets, which will help councils in the consideration of what they do with waste. At the moment the only secondary market that works really well is the one for PET’.

The minister said new policies would be aiming to boost the recycling of commercial waste. ‘We certainly want to see businesses themselves [doing] more and we shall certainly be pushing that. We are conscious more needs to be done and that will included specifically in the strategy’.

Coffey also anticipated there would be an increase in domestic processing and said there was no wish to ‘massively’ increase incineration because there was already sufficient capacity.

The new strategy was a constant theme at the RWM event in Birmingham on September 12-13, the biggest event in the UK recycling sector.

I går kveld slo Lyon Manchester City på bortebane i Champions League. I dag tar Tomra storeslem i Lyon! :)

TOMRA technology thread all of the selective collection of the Grand Lyon

Published Tuesday, September 18, 2018 16:49

World leader in optical sorting technologies, TOMRA Sorting France will provide the Paprec group and group Nicollin optical sorting of cutting-edge solutions that equip two sorting centres they will respectively to build and modernise to ensure sorting selective collection of Grand Lyon. The two plants are planned to implement the sorting of all plastics, which collection should be extended to the whole of the territory of the metropolis.

At a time when all french sorting centres gradually adapt to the entry into force of the extension of the instructions of sorting of the selective collection in all of plastic packaging, greater Lyon announced in July its decision to entrust to groups Paprec and Nicollin sorting waste from separate collection of the 1.37 million inhabitants of the city of Lyon for the next seven years, is 68 000 t/year.

The Paprec group, which will pay 60% of this volume (41 000 t), invests 25 M€ in the creation of a hub of 60 000 t/year to Saint-Priest. This new unit will be the largest group in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, and will be operational in July 2019. Nicollin on its side will deal with the remaining 40% (or 27 000 t) in his Saint-Fons sorting center, and will invest 4 M€ to modernise it and increase its capacity to 40 000 t/year by the end of March 2019. The two operators, who are committed on a minimum overall valuation of 95% of the incoming material rate, have appealed to TOMRA Sorting to equip these factories in sorting machines optical guarantee this result.

As part of the extension of the instructions of all plastics sorting, we propose to sort up to resin, indicates Christophe Mallevays, Director of the service communities Paprec and national Director of the sort of selective collection.» Citeo ask the cash centers sort movies and three streams of rigid plastics (Clear PET, HDPE/PP and says stream 'development' containing four materials: PET dark, trays, PS and opaque PET) . We propose to sort this last feeds directly in situ to produce seven flow of quality rigid plastics. This is perhaps what tipped the balance, because allows us to offer a very high recovery rate and to avoid a step in surtri for the Grand'.

The heart of the sort string of Paprec, designed by the property manager Aktid, plant will consist of fifteen optical sorting AUTOSORT 4 Touch of TOMRA machines, representing a total width of processing more than 40 m, with a rate of less than 500 kg load / h / m wide .

At Nicollin, sorting line designed by Hofmann will integrate four AUTOSORT 4 Touch of 2.8 m, which will treat light packaging and multi-material flows to extract 9 flows (newspapers magazines magazines, cartons, bricks food, papers mixed boxes, steel, aluminum, clear PET, dark PET, HDPE and the specific request of the community with regard to the new record of plastic sorting).

"Now need to sort the PET trays mono layer (type pastry) these two sorting centres will be equipped with new technology Sharp Eye.» The sorting of paper lines will be equipped with machines binary in order to optimize the quality of the outgoing stream. Forever more comfort, all TOMRA machines will be equipped with the VBC system allowing to position the valves on the bridge of maintenance for more security and ease of maintenance", indicates Frédéric Durand, Director General of TOMRA Sorting France.

"We are very satisfied with our collaboration with TOMRA in Cannes on a center of 36 000 t/year, and in particular the lack of influence of temperature on the results of sorting changes.» For Lyon, on a much more important center, we wanted binaries and wide machines which we know reliability to maximize value. With TOMRA, we take no risk' says Christophe Mallevays.

'With experience of over 19 years on the sort of selective collection of greater Lyon, our society has always tried to stay at the forefront of innovation by choosing the techniques and the best tools on the market. It is for this reason that we have trusted the professionalism of Hofmann and TOMRA," said Hocine Atek, Nicollin of Saint-Fons Center Director.

"We are very proud of the confidence the groups Paprec and Nicollin TOMRA and its technologies. By sorting all of the selective collection of the Grand Lyon as soon as 2019, the AUTOSORT of TOMRA machines will bring an indisputable contribution to the improvement of packaging development and especially Plastics', concludes Frédéric Durand.

TOMRA TECHNOLOGIES TO SORT GRAND LYON’S MIXED PACKAGING WASTE

TOMRA Sorting France, the world leader in optical sorting technologies, has been chosen to supply the Paprec Group and Groupe Nicollin with advanced solutions to sort 68,000 tons of mixed household waste per year from the 1.4 million inhabitants of the Grand Lyon metropolitan area.

...

TOMRA was a no-risk choice

Christophe Mallevays, Director of Paprec’s Communities Department and National Director of sorting selective collections, said: “Citeo requires the sorting plants to sort the films and three rigid plastic streams. These are clear PET, HDPE/PP, and a stream called "development" containing four materials: dark PET, trays, PS and opaque PET. We plan to directly sort this last stream in situ, to obtain seven streams of rigid plastics quality. This allows us to offer a very high valuation and avoid an over-sorting step for the Grand Lyon.

“We are very satisfied with our collaboration with TOMRA at a 36,000 tons-per-year plant in Cannes, including the consistency of sorting results despite temperature variations. For Lyon, which is a much larger center, we wanted binary machines, large width, and reliability to maximize the investment. With TOMRA, we know we are not taking risks."

Hocine Atek, director of the Nicollin Center in Saint-Fons, said: “With more than 19 years of experience in sorting the Grand Lyon's selective waste collection, our company has always tried to remain at the forefront of innovation by choosing the most efficient techniques and equipment on the market. That's why we trusted the professionalism of Hofmann and TOMRA.”

Almost quarter of plastic bottles washed up on Hong Kong beaches come from Coca-Cola Company

Study finds 23.4 per cent of containers picked up in clean-up operations this summer belonged to Coca-Cola brands, followed closely by Vita at 21 per cent

UPDATED : Tuesday, 02 October, 2018, 3:35pm

Almost a quarter of plastic bottles washed up on Hong Kong beaches come from the Coca-Cola Company, according to a survey by a local green group, which is urging producers to take responsibility for the problem.

The Green Earth organised 14 beach cleaning campaigns across the city this summer and found 328 of the 1,404 bottles it collected belonged to Coca-Cola brands.

At 23.4 per cent, the share was the highest of all producers.

“We do beach cleaning every year and the amount of ocean waste keeps growing,” said Hahn Chu Hon-keung, the group’s director of environmental advocacy. “People dropping the bottles are of course lacking in civic virtue, but do producers have a responsibility?”

Twenty brands come under the Coca-Cola umbrella in Hong Kong, including Bonaqua, Minute Maid and Aquarius.

Vita accounted for 21 per cent, and Cool 11.4 per cent.

Unilever topped a similar study carried out at beaches in the Philippines, and PepsiCo accounted for the most bottles in India, the group said, citing data from the Break Free From Plastic movement.

SORTING THE PLASTIC RECYCLING PROBLEM

BY TIM SYKES 8 October 2018

...

With big stakeholders such as P&G and TOMRA already showing interest, and converters such as Multivac already producing prototypes, it seems the value chain has taken note of this point.

...

The Holy Grail project is one such collaborative effort, focusing on solutions for improved sorting efficiencies and setting standards for tracer and watermark solutions. As part of the initiative TOMRA is helping assess the technical feasibility of new sorting technologies. TOMRA has also been involved in the PRISM project, along with partners including Nextek, Brunel University, CCL, Mirage Inks, Cleantech Europe and WRAP. PRISM has developed coded labels using non-rare earth based luminescent compounds as well as materials recovered from fluorescent lamp recycling. In addition to assisting recovery of PP food packaging, HDPE milk bottles and sleeved PET, it is envisaged that the technology will open up new markets for recovered fluorescent compounds.

There is no other technology on the market like this – and now that X-TRACT is available in a wider range of customized application packages, more businesses can take advantage of it.”!!!

TOMRA ENHANCES X-TRACT WITH DUAL PROCESSING TECHNOLOGY, MULTI-DENSITY CHANNELS, AND APPLICATION PACKAGES

Software innovation achieves even higher levels of accuracy, complementing X-ray-based density-detection with the prioritization of single object processing and area processing

15 October 2018

TOMRA Sorting Recycling has introduced a new-generation X-TRACT machine with innovative Dual Processing Technology which enhances final purity levels; multi-density channels to enable more precise classification and sorting of materials; and a broad range of application packages.

Valerio Sama, Vice President and Head of Product Management Recycling, commented: “With X-ray transmission technology to assess materials according to their density, X-TRACT was already capable of delivering exceptional sorting performance. TOMRA’s innovative and unique Dual Processing Technology adds even more accuracy to material recognition and sorting. There is no other technology on the market like this – and now that X-TRACT is available in a wider range of customized application packages, more businesses can take advantage of it.”

X-TRACT is best known for the sorting of Zorba (shredded mixed nonferrous scrap metals) into aluminum and mixed heavy metals but is now available in five different application packages: the E-Scrap, Organic, Wood, Aluminum, and High Power Pack.

Each Pack optimizes the machine’s performance for specific sorting tasks by precisely tailoring sensor and X-ray set-up. Application packages also have tailored mechanical specifications, fine-tuned to the user’s needs. Some users, for example, need higher material throughputs than others, and some sort heavier materials.”

Dual Processing Technology and multiple density channels
X-TRACT employs X-ray transmission (XRT) technology to sort materials according to differences in their density. Broad-band radiation penetrates the material to provide spectral absorption information which is then measured with a highly sensitive X-ray camera to identify the atomic density of the material, regardless of its thickness.

The Dual Processing Technology enables X-TRACT to distinguish between overlapping objects on the sorting line, a particularly useful advantage when lines are running higher throughputs. This advantage has been made possible by the development of sophisticated software, which can detect and prioritize between single object processing and area processing. X-TRACT is the only machine capable of this.

The introduction of multi-density channels is also a useful advance. Previous X-TRACT models sorted material according to two classes, separating it into high-density and low-density fractions. The new X-TRACT features multiple density channels, allowing a greater number of classes for separating materials according to density, with the maximum precision.

TOMRA has also improved X-TRACT with the new TOMRA ACT. This intuitive user interface enables the setting of several user-levels. TOMRA ACT is placed to optimize the sort and shows operators the most relevant real-time process data at a glance. This information improves monitoring and enables fast adjustments at any time, so the operator is always in control.

Profitere i stor skala!

https://forum.hegnar.no/thread/6777/view

CIRCULAR ECONOMY IN SCOTTISH REGIONS WORTH £1BN

By Kate Dickinson | 1 November 2018 |

Adopting circular business practises in Scotland could be worth £1 billion to two regions alone, according to reports released yesterday (31 October).
Tayside, a region including Dundee and Perth, could see around a £400-million boost to its local economy if it adopts a circular approach to business, while £625 million of potential value is predicted for Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire in North East Scotland.

The figures come from two reports by the Scottish Government-funded circular economy organisation Zero Waste Scotland (ZWS), looking into the potential benefits of a circular economy in the cities and regions of Scotland, moving away from a traditional linear model of production, consumption and disposal towards a model where waste is diminished and natural resources are kept in use at a high value for as long as possible, through reuse, repair and remanufacture.

According to ZWS, a ‘cities and regions’ approach to implementing a circular economy is beneficial because it enables plans to be tailored to the different specialisms and resource bases of different regions. Key circular economy opportunities in both regions were identified in the construction, energy infrastructure, manufacturing and food and drink sectors.

For example, Tayside accounts for 70 per cent of the total land in Scotland used for growing soft fruit, and 49 per cent of land for growing potatoes – by-products and leftovers from these industries constitute ‘significant’ amounts of biomass and potential feedstock that could be recovered rather than going to waste.

In both Tayside and Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire, a significant proportion of the potential economic benefit is located in the construction and built environment sector. Around £238 million is said to be achievable for the latter region in this industry, through measures such as designing new buildings with longevity and easy of maintenance in mind, repurposing obsolete or underused buildings for new, minimising waste and reusing materials.

The reports, produced in partnership with local Chambers of Commerce, were launched by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon at the Circular Economy Hotspot 2018, an annual gathering of international experts in the circular economy, held in Glasgow on 31 October.

Sturgeon said: “These reports show the exciting potential of a circular economy where reducing waste and investing in keeping materials in circulation for as long as possible can release an estimated £1 billion of economic opportunities for Tayside, Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire. This demonstrates the overall scale of the opportunity for Scotland.

“Scotland is already leading the way with its ambitious and challenging targets for recycling which are above and beyond the EU targets. However, we want the narrative to move beyond recycling to reuse, repair and remanufacturing of items. In this light, we are currently considering next steps for introducing a deposit return scheme which will help us achieve our ambitions.”

GLASGOW AIMS TO BE SCOTLAND’S ‘FIRST CIRCULAR CITY’

By Kate Dickinson | 2 November 2018 |

Glasgow has announced ambitions to become Scotland’s ‘first circular city’, with plans to publish a ‘route map’ to circularity next year.

The announcement came at this year’s Circular Economy Hotspot, an international conference focused on sharing knowledge and ideas around the circular economy. Sustainable business practices across Scotland were showcased at the event, which was held at the SEC Centre in Glasgow (30 October – 1 November).

Glasgow City Council has said it is aiming both to reduce the amount of waste it produces, and to focus on reusing all waste that is generated. Its ‘Circular Economy Route Map’, to be published in 2019, will focus on five key areas: food, textiles, energy, plastics and the built environment. One specific commitment announced at the Hotspot event was for 15 per cent of the city’s homes to be powered by renewable energy by 2030.

Driving the move towards a circular economy in the city is Circular Glasgow, a project launched in 2017 in partnership with Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, Zero Waste Scotland and Circle Economy, and funded with help from the European Regional Development Fund.

...

Commenting on the new circular commitment for Glasgow, Councillor Susan Aitken said: “The First Minister has announced today that the opportunity for Scotland in embracing the circular economy runs into the billions of pounds. I want Glasgow to be at the forefront of seizing that opportunity.
“The work done by the Chamber of Commerce and Zero Waste Scotland in Circular Glasgow has already put us far ahead of most of our competitors but the opportunities really are limitless. Our Route Map will point a way to building better homes and communities, reducing food insecurity and playing our part in dealing with the world’s addiction to single-use plastic.

Scottish Tories propose plastic recycling plant

Written by David McPhee - 13/11/2018 6:00 am

The Scottish Conservative Party has announced a proposal for a new plastic recycling and waste plant.

The new proposals would look to create jobs while retaining the value of Scottish waste, much of which is exported to China.

A proposal briefing, seen by Energy Voice, claims the plans would “allow Scottish waste to be treated as a valuable resource with the value retained in the Scottish economy”.

The plans also suggest that the plant would “add new recycling/waste treatment capacity to relieve pressure on local authorities/businesses stockpiling plastic” and potentially open up new opportunities “such as drawing in material from the North of England”.

Friends of the Earth scotland director Dr Richard Dixon said: “We welcome the Scottish Tories proposal for a plastic recycling plant in Scotland. It could work in tandem with the forthcoming Deposit Return Scheme and inject fresh impetus into Scotland’s drive towards a circular economy.

“Having dedicated recycling facilities in Scotland will cut down on emissions and costs of transporting materials as well as providing jobs and clear signal of intent on reducing waste.

“As the public pressure mounts to reduce the amount of plastic we use, Grangemouth will start to see a drop in the demand for plastic and the industrial area there starts to look like the obvious place to house a plastics recycling plant in the future.

“Scotland must also tackle plastic pollution at source by preventing its creation by getting to grips with industrial plastic pollution from manufacturing sites. The Scottish Government should also continue actions that help to cut down on our use of unnecessary single-use plastic items such as straws, cotton buds and coffee cups.”

https://www.energyvoice.com/otherenergy/185960/scottish-tories-propose-plastic-recycling-plant/

The Scottish Conservatives have called for the construction of a plastics recycling plant in the country to deal with “vast” quantities of material now exported to Asia.

Shadow Scottish environment secretary Maurice Golden said: “We all need to be more conscious of the waste we create and the importance of recycling.

“A Scottish plastics recycling plant would help to recycle a valuable resource, create jobs and help to ensure that no plastics from Scotland end up polluting our oceans.”

The Tories said vast quantities of Scottish plastic waste are exported rather than recycled in Scotland, where a new plant could create jobs and ensure the plastic was not dropped into oceans.

This would allow Scotland to treat its waste as a resource whose value was retained in the economy and could draw in material from the north of England.

Nok en imponerende susksesshistorie. Denne gang innen metalgjenvinning i Buffalo, New York.

NDUSTRY NEWS METALS RECYCLING

TOMRA Equipment featured at WENDT Tech Center

December 3, 2018

TOMRA Sorting Recycling, supplier of sensor-based sorting equipment, recently installed multiple sorting technologies in the new metal sorting plant at WENDT CORPORATION's Buffalo, N.Y., Technology Center. The new WENDT plant features the latest technologies and processes for cleaning, sorting, and upgrading shredded non-ferrous metals, such as zorba and zurik.

At the heart of the sorting circuit currently lies two TOMRA sensor-based sorters - COMBISENSE and X-TRACT - for metals cleaning, mixed metals sorting, aluminum upgrading and quality control of various shredded aluminum feed material. In Q4 of 2018, WENDT will install a separate line featuring the combination unit of WENDT/TOMRA FINDER with new LOD (laser object detection).

"WENDT introduced its new metal sorting plant at a critical juncture in the market, given the increased purity standards for a number of scrap products and inability for scrap recyclers to sell material to China. The plant output is high-quality, furnace-ready material, and it allows operations to test their material to ensure they are installing the right sorting technology to increase final product purity, maximize profit potential and minimize investment risk," says Eric Thurston, sales manager metals - recycling for TOMRA Sorting Recycling. "This is why they are the leader in the scrap industry, and why TOMRA values our critical partnership with WENDT in the post-shredder ELV (end of life vehicle) industry."

The specialized TOMRA COMBISENSE sorts by color and shape to separate high purity metal fractions from even the most difficult feed material. It combines a color sensor with SUPPIX® image processing technology that enhances resolution levels by a factor of eight to reduce lost product yield. "With COMBISENSE, customers can make a clean white heavy package or clean red heavy packages like copper, brass, and printed circuit boards (PCBs). They can also separate materials further, depending on market demands," adds Thurston.

X-TRACT offers high-speed X-ray transmission (XRT) with DUOLINE® technology to deliver superior recognition of secondary resources, regardless of material density. Exceptional resolution is achieved to efficiently sort even the most varied metals mix with the smallest grain size. With XRT, customers can create a clean twitch product or separate wrought and cast packages for furnace-ready material for smelters.

Introduced in early 2018 to help operations meet stringent standards like National Sword and soon to be added to the new WENDT sorting plant, TOMRA LOD mounts to the same platform as FINDER to boost a circuit's sorting capabilities without requiring additional floor space. Featuring laser technology, LOD identifies black objects attached to metal material detected by the FINDER's EM3 sensor. LOD allows black rubber, glass and plastic to be separated from zorba and zurik products, which enables these commodities to be turned into a cleaner, more valuable revenue stream.

The new WENDT metal sorting plant is now open for appointments for customers to test feed material.

Hører jeg storeslem her? Vel, tiden vil vise. :)

Tomra technology in Las Dehesas

Environmental management company Urbaser, with 128 operations in several Spanish cities, has automated two lines of six autosort systems at the Las Dehesas waste processing center.

04/12/2018

Based on the experience of Urbaser, the processing center, which receives more than half of the waste sent to Valdemingómez Technology Park, optimized the packaging processing process by introducing Stadler and Tomra technology.

According to Tomra, the waste processing center Las Dehesas prepares materials for the urban waste and packaging waste streams of the waste collected in the city of Madrid. The processing capacity is 408,000 tonnes of municipal waste and 32,850 tonnes of packaging waste. Las Dehesas has four manual sorting lines for separating recyclable materials. Two of these lines are dual-function lines that can be used for both settlement and packaging waste streams. Each of these lines handles 7.2 tons per hour, which corresponds to a total capacity of 32,850 tons per year.

The modernization project included the automation of the two lines for the treatment of packaging waste, which can also be used for the treatment of municipal waste streams, it goes on to say. Six Autosort systems from Tomra Sorting Recycling were installed in these two lines in a cascading arrangement. Two autosort systems (one per line) separate recyclable plastics and beverage cartons from non-recyclable materials. Subsequently, two more autosort systems (one per line) separate polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Finally, the material flow is brought together in a single line equipped with an autosort system for HDPE separation and another for separating beverage cartons, resulting in a mix which is then sorted by the remaining facilities, Tomra said.

The modernization project was carried out by Stadler, one of the most experienced companies in the sector of waste sorting and waste treatment. Luis Sánchez Vela, Managing Director Stadler España, commented: "The result is extremely satisfactory. Our experiences with autosortin combination with the mechanical preparation processes implemented by Stadler are extremely positive. Autosort systems are solid, easy to handle, calibrate, adjust and maintain. In addition, they achieve excellent recovery rates with first-class quality. The integration of optical sorting equipment improves the efficiency and quality of material recovery at Las Dehesas. "

Fernando Cortés Moreno, Managing Director of the consortium UTE Las Dehesas, emphasized: "This is a robust system with the necessary flexibility to make changes to the sorting program on every machine. This will help us to meet the performance and efficiency we have been guaranteed and to achieve the quality standards set for the sorted materials. "

Autosort, a highly efficient optical sorting system

Autosort offers the recycling sector benefits in the form of modern sorting technology. The Near Infrared (NIR) sensor detects materials based on their spectral properties, while the VIS sensor can distinguish all colors in the visible spectrum. By combining both sensors, autosort systems can fulfill basic, but also extremely complex requirements. In addition, it is possible to sort according to material type and material color within a single modular sorting system. The plants installed in the waste processing center Las Dehesas are equipped exclusively with NIR sensors and sort according to the type of material, regardless of the color.

"For greater comfort, we installed a centralized control system so that the operation of the systems can be checked without having to operate the screen of the respective optical sorting system. Changes can also be made faster and with greater precision, "said Fernando Cortés Moreno. In addition, he pointed to the low maintenance requirements of autosort systems: "So far, we can only confirm that the basic maintenance is easy."

Autosort systems are versatile and offer numerous configuration options, according to Tomra. They are user-friendly and could be well adapted to customer requirements. Luis Sánchez Vela on the subject: "The simplicity of operation is very beneficial. This allows the operator to easily adjust the configuration of the plant so that the material to be cut can be changed whenever needed. "

requirements fulfilled

In addition to the waste processing plant, the waste processing center Las Dehesas also includes a composting plant, an animal carcass incinerator, a landfill for non-hazardous waste, a leachate treatment plant and a landfill gas utilization plant. An important complex where trouble-free operation is indispensable. In the cooperation Stadler arrange for the installation, while Tomra offers the customer service.

"Installation and commissioning of the machines were quick and the result was very satisfactory. And in the few cases where customer service had to be called up to now, the response was excellent, "Fernando Cortés Moreno commented, concluding:" All these advantages have led us to consider whether to automate the other two lines for the treatment of municipal waste streams is possible."

"According to Tomra, Autosort Color, which works in combination with Autosort Laser, achieves purity rates greater than 95% at high throughput rates, even when input materials are wet, dusty or dirty.

Although glass waste is collected separately in many countries, a significant amount of recoverable glass nevertheless remains mixed-in with municipal solid waste (MSW) from households and businesses. Glass content in MSW across Europe typically varies from 3.5% to as much as 9.8%. And research by FEVE (the European Container Glass Federation) has revealed that the collection of glass from MSW for recycling varies considerably from nation to nation. Sweden, Norway, Switzerland and Luxembourg all achieve recovery rates of 95% or higher, but across much of western Europe the rate is typically only 68% to 75% percent and in five eastern European nations the rate is below 40%.

Autosort Color will enable sorting operations to extract and sell this glass, which would otherwise fail to make it through to the recycling process. Autosort Color also helps sorting businesses minimize the risks of disruption, downtime and repair costs arising from damage to components in sorting machines not intended for glass.

Autosort Color additionally enables financial savings downstream of the sorting process, because household waste containing glass can result in higher incineration costs. Extracting more glass from MSW will also reduce landfill costs.,"

Under Capital Markets Day 25.september sa sjefen for Tomra Sorting Solutions Volker Rehrmann:

Selskapet heter Tomra Systems.

Tomra trenger ingen rekyl.

Oktober 2019 står Tomra i 400.

PET trays successfully recycled

The working group PET trays of IK Industrievereinigung Kunststoffverpackungen has announced the successful completion of a pilot project for the recycling of PET trays.

12/11/2018

As part of the pilot project, the members of the IK working group rented a sorting line together with a manufacturer of optical sorting units at the end of August. From 30 tonnes of the mixed PET fraction from the dual systems (yellow sack / yellow bin), clear mono-PET trays were sorted out, which were then crushed by a PET recycling plant, washed and flaked. The flake then used an IK member company for the production of PET film and made from this new PET trays.

"The recycling of PET trays has so far been difficult due to the lack of suitable sorting and recycling technologies. However, the successful completion of the project shows that PET trays can be recycled, again to PET trays, even though legally no food contact is permitted. But we will also find a solution for this ", says the chairman of the working group, Sebastian Kremer, the results of the large-scale test. Further trials with significantly more input material are planned to clarify outstanding issues of large-scale sorting, material recycling and product application.

The IK PET Tray Working Group was set up at the end of February this year and aims to drive the development of the market for polyethylene terephthalate (PET) trays by ensuring recyclability. Companies in the value chain PET packaging are involved in the working group. These include manufacturers of PET trays, PET blisters, PET top films, manufacturers of optical sorting units and PET recycling companies.

The following companies participate in the pilot project:
ES-Plastic, Etimex Primary Packaging, Inde Plastic Operating Company, Klöckner Pentaplast, LINPAC Packaging, MultiPet, Paccor Germany, Pöppelmann, Kunststoffwerk-Werkzeugbau, Remondis PET Recycling, Seufert Company for Transparent Packaging mbH, Silver Plastics, Starlinger, Südpack Verpackungen, Texplast, TOMRA Sorting, W. u. H. Fernholz.

God helg.

Reaching EU plastics target "practically impossible" under current conditions

11.01.2019 −

Raising the amount of recycled plastics that is incorporated into new products as envisioned by the EU Plastics Strategy is “practically impossible” under the current conditions. This is the view of the majority of plastics converters who participated in a survey conducted last year on behalf of the umbrella organisation European Plastics Converters (EuPC).

Respondents stated for only two out of the ten plastic types covered by the survey that sufficient quantities of recycled material are available to reach the EU strategy’s overall target of 10 million tonnes used in manufacturing new products by 2025. When quality is taken into account, the picture worsens even more, with the majority of participants (71 per cent) reporting sufficient recyclate quality for only plastic type, namely PET.

Improving plastics waste collection and sorting is considered the most suitable way to raise the quality of recycled plastic material by a large share of the respondents (76 per cent).
