Maryland governor: 'Absolutely false' for Trump to say states have testing capacity to reopen

BY JUSTIN WISE - 04/19/20 11:07 AM EDT

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R) said Sunday that it was "absolutely false" to suggest that the United States' coronavirus testing capacity is at a level to safely begin reopening portions of the economy, disputing comments made by President Trump just a day earlier.

Speaking on CNN's "State of the Union," Hogan said that a shortage of testing kits has continued to be the biggest problems for states as they manage the fallout of the novel coronavirus pandemic. He said that Maryland alone has increased its testing capacity by 5,000 percent in the last month, but that it still has yet to reach a level to comfortably reopen businesses.

"To try to push this off and say the governors have plenty of testing and they should just get to work on testing, that somehow we aren’t doing our job, is just absolutely false," Hogan, who is also chairman of the National Governors Association, said.

Trump's new tactic for reelection is blaming governors for the coronavirus response

Ashley Collman 18 minutes ago

President Donald Trump is shifting blame for the coronavirus response to US governors in a bid to win reelection in November, senior administration officials and Trump advisers told Politico on Monday.

One Trump adviser told the outlet: "Blame and credit will shift to the governors, considering they are the ones making the calls."

Trump has also sought to evade blame for the country's high number of coronavirus cases and deaths by calling out China and the World Health Organization.

As the 2020 election kicks into high gear, President Trump won't just be going toe-to-toe with likely Democratic nominee Joe Biden.

Senior administration officials and Trump advisers told Politico that the president is purposefully starting feuds with some of the nation's governors over their coronavirus response in a bid to win his reelection.

By critiquing how governors handle the crisis, Trump will be able to distract from his own shortcomings in responding to the outbreak, which many found too slow.

The sources who spoke to Politico said to expect Trump's feuds to escalate in the coming days, as he pushes for the US economy to be reopened — something that the governors have said they alone will decide.

Trump targets Hogan in attempt to flip testing criticism back on governors

Maegan VazquezCNN Digital Expansion
By Maegan Vazquez and Kristen Holmes, CNN
Updated 0036 GMT (0836 HKT) April 21, 2020

Washington (CNN)President Donald Trump sought to turn criticism about federal coronavirus testing availability back on governors Monday evening, claiming some didn't "understand" what they were being told by administration officials and assuring that there was plenty of capacity ready to be used.

The move came after Vice President Mike Pence led a multi-hour call with the governors earlier in the day to address the building frustration over the availability of testing kits and processing capacity. On the call, Pence outlined testing capacity and provided each state's governor with a list of names, addresses and phone numbers of labs with additional testing capacity.
Where Pence sought to reassure, Trump once again sought to deflect blame.

During his daily press briefing, the President took swipes at two governors -- Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, a Republican, and Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker, a Democrat.

He said Pritzker "did not understand his capacity (to test), not simply ask the federal government to provide unlimited support."

Trump also said Hogan "didn't understand too much about what was going on," later asserting that the governor did not need to secure coronavirus tests from South Korea.
Hogan had touted the 500,000 tests he succeeded in procuring in part thanks to his wife's South Korean roots at his own news conference earlier Monday.

But Trump told reporters: "The governor of Maryland could have called Mike Pence, could have saved a lot of money ... I don't think he needed to go to South Korea. I think he needed to get a little knowledge would've been helpful."

Hogan responded to Trump's Monday evening comment, telling CNN's Wolf Blitzer on "The Situation Room": "I'm not sure what the President is referring to. I have a pretty good understanding of what's going on and I appreciated the information that was provided by his team."

"I don't want to get into criticizing back and forth, Wolf. The President was not on the call," Hogan added

Trump Slammed For ‘Xenonophic Scapegoating’ After

Proposing U.S. Immigration Ban

Updated 28 minutes ago

President Donald Trump tweeted on Monday that he will pass an executive order to suspend temporarily immigration to the United States, claiming that he is seeking to protect jobs in the midst of the coronavirus crisis, but Democrats criticized it as a “dumb move” and pointed to testing as a safe way to reopen the economy.

KEY FACTS

Trump tweeted: “In light of the attack from the Invisible Enemy, as well as the need to protect the jobs of our GREAT American Citizens, I will be signing an Executive Order to temporarily suspend immigration into the United States!”

At least 22 million people registered for unemployment benefits across the U.S. over the past month, as social distancing measures have shuttered many businesses classed as non-essential and led to record job losses.

Trump has been keen to reopen the economy despite the rising number of coronavirus cases, and 42,000 Americans dying from the virus.

The president has tweeted his support for protesters opposing states’ social distancing measures, and sparred with Democratic governors.

But with an election looming, Trump’s move appears to pivot the crisis into a way for him to implement his long standing goal of cutting immigration to the U.S. and building a wall along the U.S. border with Mexico.

Trump disregards science as chaos overtakes coronavirus response

Analysis by Stephen Collinson, CNN
Updated 5:04 AM EDT, Thu April 23, 2020

(CNN)Alarming new signs are emerging that the Trump administration is shunting science aside in the battle against coronavirus.

In Wednesday's most stunning development, a top administration official working on a vaccine claimed he was ousted after resisting efforts to push unproven drugs promoted by President Donald Trump and his conservative media cheerleaders as "game changer" treatments.

That news was followed by a bewilderingly inconsistent White House briefing. Conflicting messages on when to reboot the economy, the need for testing and the possibility of a resurgence of the virus combined with Trump's effort to suppress facts that jar with his insistence that the end of a nightmare likely to last many more months is near.

In another bizarre twist, Trump produced Robert Redfield, director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, to walk back his remarks that the coronavirus challenge could be more difficult in the fall.

Trump claimed that Redfield had been "totally misquoted" by the media. But under questioning from reporters, Redfield confirmed that he had in fact made the remarks that angered Trump.

"I'm accurately quoted in The Washington Post," he conceded, as Trump countered that the headline was wrong. It accurately described Redfield warning that if a coronavirus resurgence came at the same time as the flu season, hospitals could be overwhelmed.

The President also openly clashed with his top public health officials on the likelihood of the virus returning for another assault in the fall -- saying only "embers" of disease were likely that could be easily put out.

Trump Organization seeks coronavirus bailouts for president's golf resorts in Ireland and Scotland

Kim Hjelmgaard USA TODAY
Published 3:46 PM EDT Apr 23, 2020

The Trump Organization has applied for bailout money from Ireland and Scotland to help cover salaries for employees at its three golf resorts in Europe because of the coronavirus lockdown, according to a report by Bloomberg.

There is nothing improper about the applications. Companies across Ireland and the United Kingdom are making use of the government programs that fund up to 80% of workers' salaries, with a $3,100 monthly cap, if they are put on leave and not laid off.

But the easy access to state aid for financially struggling Trump Organization golf resorts in Europe stands in contrast to U.S. economic relief for President Donald Trump's family company – to which it is mostly barred. The Trump Organization is run by the president's sons, Eric and Donald Jr. Since taking office, Trump has vowed to insulate himself from the international business empire that bears his name.

Trump Organization managers and employees in Europe did not immediately return requests for comment on Bloomberg's report.

Trump chloroquine push came after talk with donor, source says

The official said he was instructed to implement a program aimed at expanding access to the drug after the president's conversation with a billionaire supporter.

Government official says he was fired for questioning hydroxychloroquine

April 23, 2020, 8:10 PM CEST / Updated April 23, 2020, 11:03 PM CEST
By Geoff Bennett and Dareh Gregorian

WASHINGTON — A top Health and Human Services official who said he was transferred from his post for pushing back on “efforts to fund potentially dangerous drugs promoted by those with political connections” felt pressured to rush access to chloroquine treatments for coronavirus after President Donald Trump had a conversation about it with a mega-rich donor, a source close to the doctor told NBC News.

Dr. Rick Bright said he was instructed to implement a national program aimed at expanding access to the drug without proper controls in place and despite the lack of peer-reviewed clinical data on the drug's effectiveness following a conversation Trump had with Oracle Chairman Larry Ellison, the source said.

Ellison sits on the White House economic recovery task force and is one of the president’s top supporters in the tech industry. The billionaire also hosted a big-money fundraiser for Trump at his home in Rancho Mirage, Calif., in February.

The president has repeatedly touted hydroxychloroquine as a potential "game changer" in the battle against the coronavirus.

The New York Times reported on April 6 that “Mr. Trump first expressed interest in hydroxychloroquine a few weeks ago, telling associates that Mr. Ellison, a billionaire and a founder of Oracle, had discussed it with him.” Oracle is also reportedly working with the federal government on an online platform to track the effectiveness of off-label drugs used to combat COVID-19.

Bright was deputy assistant secretary of Health and Human Services for preparedness and response and director of the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority, or BARDA, until earlier this week when he said he was "involuntarily transferred to a more limited and less impactful position at the National Institutes of Health" for having pushed back against pressure for widespread use of the drug.

"These drugs have potentially serious risks associated with them, including increased mortality observed in some recent studies in patients with COVID-19," Bright said in a statement Wednesday.

An HHS spokesperson said in a statement to NBC News on Wednesday night that “it was Dr. Bright who requested an Emergency Use Authorization(EUA) from the Food and Drug Administration for donations of chloroquine that Bayer and Sandoz recently made to the Strategic National Stockpile for use on COVID-19 patients.”

A source familiar with Bright’s situation said the administration was pushing for a nationwide expanded access program that would provide chloroquine with limited physician oversight.

“Dr. Bright and his team were insisting upon a randomized controlled clinical study because there was insufficient information on the benefit and the potential harms of the drug to patients with COVID-19," the source said. Implementing the EUA, the source said, was a compromise between the two positions.

House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Frank Pallone, D-N.J., wrote a letter Thursday requesting an HHS inspector general investigation into Bright's reassignment.

Bright's lawyers, Debra S. Katz and Lisa J. Banks, said in a statement that they would be filing whistleblower complaints with the HHS IG and the Office of Special Counsel, and accused the Trump administration of making making "demonstrably false statements" about their client.

“In our filing we will make clear that Dr. Bright was sidelined for one reason only — because he resisted efforts to provide unfettered access to potentially dangerous drugs, including chloroquine, a drug promoted by the Administration as a panacea, but which is untested and possibly deadly when used improperly. The facts and concerns raised by Dr. Bright are compelling and well-documented and soon they will be public," the lawyers said

TDS = Trump Derangement Syndrome

NY Republicans Trust Cuomo More Than Trump on Virus Rebound, New Poll Shows

Self-identified conservative voters trust Cuomo on reopening the state over Trump by a 23-point margin

Published 53 mins ago • Updated 52 mins ago

Gov. Andrew Cuomo has become so popular because of his coronavirus response, even New York's most conservative Republican voters say they trust him more than President Donald Trump.

That's one of the findings of a new Siena College poll released Monday that shows the governor's job performance rating stands at 71 percent, his highest ever in his near-decade in office.

Some 56 percent of Republican voters say they trust Cuomo to decide how to reopen New York, versus 36 percent who trust Trump.

Even those who self-identify as conservative, the pollsters said, trust Cuomo more by a 23-point margin.

Trump's approval rating among New York Republican voters fell 10 points in the latest poll versus the prior month, while Cuomo's rose four points -- meaning the Democratic governor is now more popular than the Republican president among GOP voters in the state.

The telephone and online poll of 803 registered voters was conducted April 19-23 and has a margin of error of 3.7 percentage points
