Dry Bulk FFA: Capesize Market on Positive Territory
in Dry Bulk Market,International Shipping News 12/12/2017

Capesize FFA Commentary:
It was a positive morning yesterday for cape paper as rates pushed in anticipation of the index breaching $30k. There was however some nervousness about as a quiet afternoon brought on some sharper selling interest allbeit in small volume. Despite the fact Dec may continue to push higher, many are acutely aware of the drop going into Jan and the lack of transactions at these rates which may keep a lid on rates going further out.
Panamax FFA Commentary:
We were better bid from the outset again on Panamax paper with Dec and Jan quickly adding $250 to Fridays close. Despite a midmorning lull we began to see buyers upping their ideas post index with some sharper buying eventually seeing Dec printing $13250 and Jan and Q1 trading up to $12350 and $11750 highs respectively before offers began to thin out making for a slow afternoon.
Supramax FFA Commentary:
Supramax paper witnessed a rather dull start to the new week with little early trading apart from some Q1 $9900. However after a negative index -$29 10TC and -12 derived 6TC some bid support was seen and pushed the rates up but again with limited activity.
Handysize FFA Commentary:
Quiet day on the handysize paper, however did see some action late afternoon with Cal 18 trading $8475.

Capes pass $30,000 mark, hitting four-year highs
Dec 13, 2017 02:28 pm | Sam Chambers

Capesize freight rates crashed through the $30,000 mark yesterday, hitting highs not seen for four years. Brokers pointed to the tight supply situation in the Atlantic basin for the rapid improvement in fortunes for the cape market seen over the past week. Gas shortages in China have also sparked a notable uptick in coal imports […]

Dry Bulk FFA: Capesize Market Plateaus
in Dry Bulk Market,International Shipping News 13/12/2017

Capesize FFA Commentary:
An initital burst of optimism as the January contract was paid numerous times in the Asian session at 19500 – 19750. The physical market remains supported although activity was muted. The lack of physical information led to the front end of the curve retracing a little although volumes were thin. There was little conviction or interest as many traders start to draw a line under their positions for the year end. Will Dec 2017/Jan 2018 be reminiscent of Dec 2013/Jan 2014 where the Dec finished strongly only for Jan to collapse or are the fundamentals this year more in favour of owners? This is the question.

Panamax FFA Commentary:
Steady range bound day on Panamax paper with little change across the curve despite some small intra day moves. We saw decent volume committed inside these exchanges and closed with a few more offers developing right at the close. Prompt contracts were the main focus again with volume traded on Dec and Jan inside $13250-13350 and $12000-12200 ranges respectively.

Supramax FFA Commentary:
Supramax paper remained pretty flat from the close last night. The prompt eventually came off slightly with $10,000 being sold on the Smx Jan and $9900 on the Q1. The Cal 18 did see some better bids with $10200 being paid. Index was slightly back positive yesterday with $11 6TC and $35 10TC.

Handysize FFA Commentary:
A rather active day was witnessed for the handysize paper yesterday. Cal 18 was seen trading $8500 and the Cal 19 $8550.

Nye muligheter åpner seg i fremtiden:

"EGA long-term port facility agreement with Khalifa Port
Dry Bulk, Wednesday, 13 December 2017 11:03

Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) has signed a long-term port facility agreement with Abu Dhabi Ports to use some of the world’s largest bulk cargo vessels to import raw materials through Khalifa Port.

With this agreement, Abu Dhabi Ports will be able to develop the port to become the first in the Gulf capable of directly handling these massive ships.

Abu Dhabi Ports will fund and complete dredging and widening works to the Khalifa Port approach channel and basin including EGA’s berth. The dredging will deepen the channel to 18.5 metres and basin to 18 metres basis zero tide. EGA plans to use large dry bulk ships to import raw materials without the need to transfer all or some of the cargo to smaller vessels outside the port, reducing long-term shipping costs and improving environmental performance.

The agreement was signed at EGA’s head-quarters in Al Taweelah (KIZAD) by Captain Mohamed Juma Al Shamisi, Chief Executive Officer of Abu Dhabi Ports and Abdulla Kalban, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of EGA.

In alignment with Abu Dhabi Port’s strategy the partnership between the two entities supports regional development by enhancing value to customers. The company has played a pioneering role by introducing other first-time ventures in the Middle East.

The development at Khalifa Port is expected to lead to larger ships calling in to Abu Dhabi, creating new trade opportunities, supporting local industries and boosting the Emirate’s position as a global maritime trade hub.

EGA will use capsize vessels to ship bauxite ore, the feedstock for alumina refineries, from the Republic of Guinea in West Africa. Currently, EGA is constructing UAE’s first alumina refinery next to its aluminium smelter in Khalifa Industrial Zone Abu Dhabi, located adjacent to Khalifa Port, ensuring streamlined logistics. Upon achieving full-production, the Al Taweelah alumina refinery will process 5 million tpa of bauxite.

Captain Al Shamisi said: “Today’s announcement marks another first for Abu Dhabi’s maritime and trade industry, and demonstrates our commitment to ongoing innovation and expansion in response to market and customer demands. As vital trade, logistics and industrial hubs of Abu Dhabi, Khalifa Port and KIZAD play a vital role in the Emirate’s economic diversification strategy. Khalifa Port will be the first port in the region with capsize vessel handling capacity, and with EGA’s long term commitment, will give an important boost to trade and investment in KIZAD and more broadly in the region.”

Abdulla Kalban added: “Dredging Khalifa Port to allow fully-laden Capesize vessels to reach EGA’s berth will reduce our costs, simplify our bauxite supply chain, and improve our environmental performance. I am also pleased that the enhanced capabilities at Khalifa Port will enable broader trade and economic benefits for Abu Dhabi.”

Khalifa Port is located halfway between Abu Dhabi and Dubai and is one of the most efficient and technologically advanced in the world, currently serving more than 20 shipping lines. KIZAD, the region’s largest industrial zone, covers 410 km2 around Khalifa Port. EGA’s site is the biggest industrial facility at KIZAD and covers an area five times the size of Al Marayah Island in Abu Dhabi. EGA also operates an aluminium smelter at Jebel Ali in Dubai. Al Taweelah alumina refinery will produce 2 million tpy of alumina, meeting 40% of EGA’s requirements for feedstock for aluminium smelters.

Bauxite ore from Guinea will be transported to Abu Dhabi via the global shipping firm K-Line, under a separate agreement with EGA. Earlier this year Mr Kalban attended the naming ceremony for one of the vessels K-Line will use for this service. The vessel was named Cape Taweelah."

Shipowners active in the dry bulk market are popping champagne bottles early this year, as the “Festive” season seems to have arrived early in the form of a new surge in freight rates. In its latest weekly report, shipbroker Allied Shipbroking noted that “the Baltic Dry Index has showed a fairly bullish face lately, hitting a new high of 1,727 points, a number that we haven’t seen since early 2014. This new peak came just in time to calm fears that the much anticipated firming in the final quarter had come to an early fizzle, after a number of small downward corrections noted in weeks prior. With the Capesize T/C average breaking today the US$ 30,000 per day mark, positive attitude in the market seem to now be in abundance”.

Skulle tro dette bekrefter at skipsprisene vil stige kraftig i tiden fremover. Det vil også reflekteres i NAV'en til GOGL og dermed en økning i kursen:

"Korean Shipbuilders Have Much Anticipation for Hike in Ship Prices Next Year
in Shipbuilding News 14/12/2017

It is noteworthy that ship prices will rise next year with the shipbuilding industry shrinking recently due to forecasts about hundreds of billions of won in loss by Samsung Heavy Industries. This is because a rise in ship prices is highly likely to pull up prices of orders across the board and make an improvement to shipbuilders’ business performances.

According to the shipbuilding and securities industries on December 12, it was forecast that prices of Korean ships will inflate about 15% this year thanks to a strong Korean won, rising steel prices and limited competition among others.

The Clarksons Index, a lagging indicator, is expected to climb more than 10 percent in the second half of next year. “A rise in prices of orders to Korean shipbuilders started to spread from mid-sized vessels of Hyundai Mipo Dockyard to large-sized ones of Hyundai Heavy Industries,” said Park Moo-hyun, a researcher at Hana Financial Investment. “A strong Korean won and a hike in steel prices will accelerate a rise in prices of orders to Korean shipbuilders.”

Observing recent orders, some types of vessels are taking the initiative in raising vessel prices. Hyundai Heavy Industries received orders to build three very large crude carriers (VLCCs) from two shipping companies (Sinokor Merchant Marine and Hyundai Glovis) this month. In particular, it was of note that the shipbuilder received orders at prices higher than their market prices. Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) also landed a VLCC contract from a Greek company on December 4. It was also reported that DSME got the order for a price at the level of Hyundai Heavy Industries’s prices of the three vessels. “We now know that DSME landed the order at a price US$2 million more than US$ 81 million, the price of a VLCC,” an industry official said.

Such orders can be credited to technological quality satisfying international environmental standards. Experts say that vessel prices rose as various kinds of devices were added in order to honor Tier 3 Standards, an environmental regulation set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

“Although China is still continuing its offensive with low prices, the Korean shipbuilders were able to land the orders at prices higher than market prices because they adopted high-end specifications to meet tougher environmental regulations,” said an official of the shipbuilding industry.

In recent years, the Korean shipbuilding industry’s biggest concern was low prices of ships built in China. Even though Korean shipbuilders told shipping companies about the quality of ships built by Korean shipbuilders, a lot lower prices offered by Chinese shipbuilders made Korean shipbuilders helpless. Pan Ocean recently placed orders for six super large ore carriers (VLOCs) with the Chinese shipbuilding industry. The contract totaled US$444.51 million and US$74.09 million apiece. The price difference is large compared to an order amounting to about US$80 million to build a VLOC which Polaris Shipment placed with Hyundai Heavy Industries.

Tar like godt med denne også da dette vil presse ratene nordover:

"Coal ship queue continues to grow
in Dry Bulk Market,Port News 14/12/2017

Up to 70 ships are now sitting off the coast of Mackay as Dalrymple Bay coal port continues to struggle to keep up with demand.

Two weeks ago there were 45 ships waiting for coal.

The delays have forced Stanmore Coal to downgrade its profit forecast for the December half year because the delays mean two shipments have been pushed back to January. That will cost it $3 million in underlying earnings for the December half. The current schedule has ships delayed until the middle of January.

The delays are caused by a combination of demand and the lingering impacts of Cyclone Debbie on the supply chain. And now the Department of Natural Resources and Mines is warning the industry that there could be four cyclones hitting the central coast of Queensland this summer and a 54 per cent chance of more cyclones occurring.

Queensland Resources Council CEO Ian Macfarlane said maintenance at the port was a key issue and was scheduled to coincide with the arrival of Queensland’s wet season, which seasonally would see a fall in ship arrivals, but due to the supply constraints from Debbie there is strong demand for coking coal.

“Cyclone Debbie shut down the Goonyella system for more than five weeks, yet Queensland’s coal infrastructure weathered the storm,’’ he said.

“Despite DBCT being down 5.60 million tonnes year on year at the end of May as a result of the cyclone, large volumes at the port between August and October saw total losses for the year reduced to 2.73 million tonnes. This tonnage catch-up at a time of high prices is delivering a welcome royalty bonanza to Queensland coffers.’’

McCullough Robertson strategic adviser Michael Roche said the ship queues at some coal export terminals are at their highest since the cyclone and flooding issues in the summer of 2010-11 but this time the issue is not lack of coal.

“In fact, coal exports out of the Dalrymple Bay terminal are up 6 per cent in the three months to November compared to the same period in 2016,” he said.

“Exports are higher at three of the four main (Queensland) coal export ports. The queues will hopefully ease over the summer, subject to cyclone impacts.”
