Nikola Awards Nel Hydrogen Contract to Support 30 Fueling Stations

Nikola Motor Co. has awarded a contract to Nel Hydrogen for 448 electrolyzers — which separate water into hydrogen and oxygen — and associated fueling equipment, as Nikola prepares to roll out a fueling network in the United States of 30 stations to support commercial and passenger vehicles operating on hydrogen fuel cells.

Tests with two stations are scheduled toward the end of 2018, with deployment of 28 more beginning in 2020. Nikola plans fleet tests of its hydrogen electric semitrucks in 2019. The first two stations will be installed in Arizona and California, depending on permit timelines.

“The future for zero-emission trucks has never been brighter,” Nikola CEO Trevor Milton said in a statement. “This is an incredibly exciting time, and we have now contractually set in motion the largest network of hydrogen in the world.”

The contract also includes an initial order for a pre-engineering package of around $1.5 million, where Nel Hydrogen will develop a station design, including electrolyzers, specifically made for fast fueling of Nikola trucks. Nel will continue to work, in collaboration with Nikola, to finalize the detailed station design and other technology elements to be deployed for the commercial stations.

The additional 28 stations will be installed on each route outside of Anheuser-Busch’s breweries or their distribution centers, Milton said.

In May, Anheuser-Busch placed an order for up to 800 hydrogen-electric powered heavy-duty day cabs from Nikola as the beverage company signaled its intention to convert its dedicated fleet to trucks powered by renewable energy sources.

Each station will produce 700 bar [of filling pressure] and will be compatible with Class 8 trucks and passenger cars, Milton said.
The electrolyzer stacks will be manufactured in Norway and the fueling equipment in Denmark. However, other supporting components and sub-systems will be sourced locally in the U.S. to reduce costs and minimize transportation needs.

At the same time, Nel announced it was considering expanding its production facility plant in Norway, where it is headquartered.
“We’re looking at a total contract volume which is many times higher than the current annual production capacity at Notodden. While we have not reached any conclusions on an expansion to accommodate the order, we want to reiterate our plans to develop the Notodden facility into the world’s largest electrolyzer stack manufacturing facility, aiming at a cost reduction of around 40%,” Nel CEO Jon André Løkke said.

Nikola Motor Company Chooses Nel as the Sole Equipment Supplier to Create the Largest Hydrogen Network in the World
The hydrogen network will cover 2,000 miles and 16 stations

Published November 15, 2017
SALT LAKE CITY, UT (November 15, 2017) -- Nikola Motor Company has chosen Nel ASA as the sole equipment supplier to create the largest hydrogen network in the world that will cover over 2,000 miles and include 16 stations. Nikola has already kicked off two of the 16 stations and 14 more will follow immediately after installation. Nikola plans to build more than 700 hydrogen stations by 2028

“Nikola Motor Company is leading the way for hydrogen in the world,” said Nikola CEO Trevor Milton. “Nikola has issued Nel a purchase order for the first two stations, based on Nel’s alkaline electrolysers and H2Station technology. Our teams have decided to double our initial station number to 16 by reducing the size of the stations and create more hydrogen lanes.”
“We have thousands of trucks that have been reserved and need to be delivered. The stations are the first step to completing that process,” said Scott Perry, Nikola’s chief operating officer. “Nel has delivered over 3,500 hydrogen solutions in over 80 countries since 1927. We are confident they can deliver.”

Each station is anticipated to have the following specifications:

Nel ASA to provide engineering, electrolysis, and fueling equipment. Nikola will provide the balance of plant, construction, dispensers and other station equipment.
Hydrogen stations will initially produce up to eight tons daily, but can also be expanded up to 32 tons per day
Each Nikola truck is anticipated to consume around 50-75 kgs per day
Each Nikola truck will store between two and three megawatt hours (mWh) of energy.
Each station will have around 4,000 kgs of backup storage for redundancy
Each station is anticipated to produce hydrogen at 700 bar (10,000 psi) and 350 bar (5,000 psi)
Nikola will allow all hydrogen vehicles to fill at our stations
Nikola’s objective is to produce hydrogen through zero emission methods whenever possible by using wind, solar and hydro-electricity. Milton recently spoke at the Zero Conference in Norway about the company’s plans to reduce the emission from production to consumption. Nikola is also exploring partnerships in Europe.

This was revealed as the hydrogen-electric truck manufacturer announced the latest financing round of more than $100 million in August. The amount is expected to be doubled by the end of C-round financing.
Nikola Motor Company also announced that its fleet of hydrogen-electric trucks will be launched in 2020. To date, the company has nearly $11 billion in pre-order reservations; among them is the 800-truck order from Anheuser-Busch as previously reported on Petrolplaza.
In addition, a contract to build the world’s largest hydrogen network was already awarded to hydrogen solutions firm NEL in June.
“Nikola’s business model has been vetted, and the investment world is taking notice,” said Nikola CEO Trevor Milton.

Salt Lake City-based Nikola chose Nel ASA as the sole equipment supplier to create the hydrogen fueling network, with Nel to provide engineering, electrolysis and fueling equipment. Nikola will provide the balance of plant, construction, dispensers and other station equipment.
Purchase orders are signed for the first two stations nov 2017, with equipment arriving in the next six to eight months, Milton said. “We have 14 more showing up right after that once these first ones check off to make sure there are no issues with the process of how we are going to do the electrolysis.”

The @nikolamotor truck that will be unveiled is a monster. The truck operates on 800 volts and has nearly 3 megawatt hours of usable energy on board and can weigh less than a diesel, hence why hydrogen is winning. Nikola World will be awesome . #emissionsgameover

Time will show...Mr Bond tror nok at styret i Nel er samlet rundt styremøtebordet nå..
En ombygging av HYOP sine pumper til Nel sine energiløsninger kan Nel sine geniale og kunnskapsrike ingeniører løse. Husk at vi aksjonærer tjener penger på Kg H2 som Nel selger fra sine pumper. FC biler kommer for fullt.
